Betrayal

“Doctor Diane, thank you for saving my mother!” A young teenage boy approached Diane. “That’s my job. I am happy we were able to save her, but that was because you were wise enough to call for help right away. If you got shocked and panicked during that time, we wouldn’t have made it”. Diane explained and praised the boy with a genuine smile. “Thanks to the emergency drills we have been having at school, I was able to respond positively to the situation, although I won’t deny I was shaking while making the call in fear and worry.” “Anyone would have reacted the way you did, so it was your bravery that saved your mother,” Diane was actually trying to comfort the boy with compliments.  “So you have to be brave and take extra care of your mom more than before, okay?” “Yes, Doc! Thank you so much!” The boy gave Diane a slight bow of the head as respect and hurriedly ran to his mother’s bedside to assist her if needed. Diane’s shift of duty came to an end. She was on her way out of the hospital when she got a message from Mark. It was an address. Followed by a single sentence. “I’ll be waiting for you.” All her doubts dissipated in an instant. Mark has always been extra romantic with actions. Although they were not sweet talkers, he always surprises Diane with simple acts of romantic dates and being attentive to life and lovers’ events, which is the exact opposite to hers, as she is a person with a practical personality. She is also oblivious of calendar dates, fueled by the fact that she had to keep herself busy ever since she was young to earn for her daily needs and education. She was born out of wedlock, and her irresponsible father left her mom when he found out she got pregnant, and her mom died a few years after giving birth to her, so her great-grandma raised her. Although she lacked parental love, her great-grandma gave her all the love she could give, not much for an elderly to give her material things, but life principles and dignity have been the pillars of her youth, leading her to live a life with facts and reality. She was taught that a mistake has consequences, no matter how light or simple they may be, and she was taught that good deeds harvest rewards no matter how simple, or serious they may be. She was merely a person of black and white. She believes that when your heart is pure, you are honest, you do your best, you will have peace. She also knows that not everyone is like her. She gives room for doubts if there are no reliable proofs. She is also aware that not everyone agrees with her ideas, but what can she do? She has long been aware that her existence was a result of foolishness and stupidity. Foolish mom for giving herself without the security of marriage, and more foolish for giving herself without protection and getting pregnant. And stupid father for just thinking about pleasure, never considering the outcome those actions will bring. Irresponsible for not even helping her mom decide what best to do since the consequences already revealed themselves but running away from it instead. And seeing how her great grandmother had suffered from raising her up since she was born, this reality has always been a reminder for her to be conscious and always be watchful of her actions and decisions. And so far, her life had never brought her regrets. But at the moment, she is not so confident in herself. How is she going to react if her intuition turns out to be right? She can’t even pretend to be positive. Her emotions are in chaos.  She’s been reminding herself to calm down and don’t jump to crazy conclusions as she was about to enter the restaurant, according to the text that she got from Mark. She asked the waiter’s assistance for the reservations and followed as the waiter guided her directions. It was a private room, not surprising as Mark would usually set their dinner dates in private rooms to enjoy their time to be alone rarely, it’s costly, but they are now professionals, so they can afford unlike during college days. The waiter left after making sure it was the right room she was asking for. Diane opened the door in surprise as she saw figures of a man and a woman in embrace and kissing, she couldn’t see their faces, so she first thought she came to the wrong room. She quickly went out, afraid she would be noticed by the couple inside. She was so nervous that she held the knob tightly, closing the door quietly and slowly. She noticed the label on the door and checked her phone for the details of the reservation she received, and her eyes have been moving back and forth between the door label and her phone screen until she was satisfied that they really have the same information. After being sure, very sure, that she is at the right door, she took a deep breath, composed her emotions, and calmly knocked on the door. “Yes? Come in”, answered a female voice from the inside. She opened the door and saw the two still in their embrace. The woman was sitting on the man’s lap, her arms tangled around his neck and shoulders while his right arm was around her waist. She was hurt. But she thought it would be better to talk and end things in a calmer manner. “Was I really invited here, or did I just get the wrong sent message”? Diane calmly asked Mark looking straight in the eye and did not wait for their invitation to sit down and find a seat for herself. Anyway, they were occupying only one seat, so the other seat was empty. Mark was so surprised that he sat right up and pushed the girl apart from his body in embarrassment.  “Diane…. I am so sorry. I wanted to tell you, but I didn’t… know...how… “ Mark stuttered.  “Yeah, I figured. But since we’re all here, all concerned parties, I think..” glancing at the woman next to him, she said, “we should settle this once and for all. I love you, Mark, I hope you know that, and I hope you know me well to know how these things will affect us.”  “I am so sorry, Diane. I didn’t intend for you to find out this way. I am willing to do whatever you want in order to forgive me.” Mark was actually telling the truth. He wanted to confess and come clean, end up things with her on good terms, but she has been so busy lately that the last time they met was a month ago. Many things had happened to him within those days, and he wasn’t able to resist Candy when they got drunk and had drunken s*x, and it had been a few times already. Though he regrets the feeling after because he knows he is betraying Diane, he is also a man with needs and somebody willingly satisfying him. It was so difficult for him to stay faithful to Diane until the end. Candy was always around that his feeling started to change, slowly accepting Candy’s offer of affection and slowly forgetting Diane’s absence. Yet now that he was face to face with Diane, he was not so confident Candy weighs better than Diane in his heart. He loves Diane’s personality and principles. Even right now, Diane’s reaction isn’t out of his expectations. She is reacting calmly, trying to solve this mess in a conversational way that outsiders may never realize what actually is going by looking at how calm things are being discussed.
