The Beginning: Break- Ins
Chapter One: Break- In's
The sound of the door slamming shut in the middle of the night stirred her up. Tori pulled the duvet closer to her chin. He had returned, and she was sure he was upset about something this time. She shuffled out of bed quietly when she heard nothing after that.
“Satori!” he yelled out, vibrations stretching through her body like a cold towel on a cat. “Satori!!” he called out again, “Get down here. I know you can hear me.” She swallowed and climbed down the stairs. Her socks-clad feet made it easier for her to walk quietly.
“Yes fa-,” She stopped before she said something she would regret, her voice was monotonous and thin. He turned from where he was facing her directly, his eyes bloodshot and his lips in a thin line that would’ve convinced anyone that he didn’t want to say so much, but in all her seventeen years, she had known better.
With her phone cradled in her palms behind her back, she was ready to dial Nora, her best friend's number. It was the only place she could go to if things went south.
“What is today?” he asked her, his voice a touch of bitterness that she had grown accustomed to. Even the words were heavy on her lips as her gaze danced around the room, looking anywhere but at him.
“I said-”
“It’s my birthday and-”
“And what?!” he snapped before she could finish her initial statement. “In case your unselfish self won’t remember, let me remind you. Let me tell you the one thing you forget- It’s my wife’s death anniversar- the-” his voice breaking at the end of the sentence. She didn’t realise she was crying until tears rolled down her cheeks.
“Don’t you dare cry in front of me, it is all your fault.”
“She was my mother, too, okay!” The words left her mouth before she could think twice, the truth hoarse in her throat and reality tearing at her chest.
“Get out,” It was faint, but she heard the anger lacing his voice. “Get out of this house you witch and don’t return.” His words seared through her like fire through glass.
“Wh- you can’t send me out-”
“I just did. I promised to keep you here till you were old enough to look after yourself and now i think i’ve done enough for you.” Her lips parted in a breathy sigh, her eyes now focused on the man she had seen to be her father because he had made her mother happy.
“Where- where am i supposed to be-”
“Just leave and don’t come back.”
It was past eleven, it would be crazy for her to go to Zain’s. Even though they were dating for the past two years, she didn’t want to show up to his house unannounced.
It was better to find refuge with Nora, a ten minute walk was all it was going to take. She closed the door behind her and tugged her hoodie tighter around her body. The cold wind swept through her face, washing her kinky curls around her ears as she walked through the semi quiet streets.
“I’d be fine,” she muttered to herself as she moved, ignoring the eerie feeling that someone was following her. Her strides increased, and her throat tightened as a soft ruffling from the side caught her attention.
She turned to examine the noise, a large black figure loomed in the shadow, its stagnation made her heart skip a beat.
“Hello, is anyone there?” she asked with shaky breath while taking small cautious steps backwards. The figure remained as it was, haunting her with its presence.
A sharp yell escaped her throat as she collided into something- the warmth enveloping her as large hands held her. She yanked, pushing at the person who held her.
“Let me go!” She crashed out yelling until she broke free and without thinking twice she dashed through the pathway to Nora’s house.
By the time she looked back, it was obvious that no one was following her, she may have been hallucinating. She didn’t stop until she reached Nora’s window. The window was slightly parted and her curtains strewed to the left to see a bit of inside her room.
“Nora-“ her words died in her throat as the sight in front of her unfolds. It wasn’t just Nora, she had a visitor , a visitor whom Tori didn’t imagine seeing here in a million years. She had to be dreaming. Her chest caved in deeper, anxiety, grief and heartbreak all in one picture.
It was Zain and Nora cuddled up on the bed like they had known each other for years, like two puzzle pieces.
“No,” she pushed the window further apart and climbed in quietly- she wanted to be sure, that this was all part of the bad dream she was in, that none of it was real.
Her heart pounded in her chest even louder, her feet growing cold the more she remained still watching the two persons she thought was her safe space hold each other.
As if sensing her presence, Nora stirred awake, her eyes moving from the boy sleeping beside her to the girl opposite them.
“Tori?” Nora’s eyes widened in surprise and guilt. She shoved at Zain hoping he’d wake up to see.
“What- what-“ Tori’s voice broke into small sobs as tears filled her eyes. Zain stirred awake, his hands rubbing the sides of Nora's arm, oblivious to his girlfriend standing in the room.
“What’s the noise Nora? Do you want to go-ow!” He rubbed his hands until his eyes fell on Tori.
“Tori.” Her name sounded like ash and water on his lips. “I- what- you are no-“ he turned to Nora. “You told me she’d not come today.”
“What the hell is happening?!” Tori snapped, her veins coursing with anger and something else, something stronger.
“Hey, easy now. Calm down-“ Nora raised the duvet closer to her face while Zain slowly moved out of bed in his underwear.
Her eyes blurred, not with tears but traces of white and blue light flashing across. It was subtle but it grew stronger too.
“Tori, you’re upset but it’s not what it looks like. You need to control whatever it is- you’re beginning to look like one of those crazy others.”
His words didn’t make her feel better, instead it added fuel to the fire nestling in her chest.
“Woah- woah- easy. Are you doing that?” Tori turned to the side and noticed that the furniture was rising by the sides. Something was lifting them off like gravity was switched off. It wasn’t something, it was her. The energy was coming off of her. Her eyes widened and she pulled back hoping it’d stop but it didn’t instead more things were drawn into her space.
“Tori stop it! It’s not funny!” Nora yelled but she was overwhelmed with emotions that she couldn’t keep track of what she was doing. What was happening? The more her hands moved, the more things moved in its direction too.
“Ahhh!!” A sharp yelp leaves her mouth as a mark appears on her collar bone, the pain pierced through her skin into her brain where everything seemed to be happening all at once. Her vision blurred but she heard the screaming, the yelling before everything went black.
The figure that had been lurking in the shadows glanced at her body at the back of the car, it’s blue eyes piercing at the exposed skin on her neck and collar bones.
“It’s unfortunate that we get to meet like this Satori,”
