Chapter Four: Lurking Danger
“We are having a new student in the mid term?” Ed asked, “Why? Who is he?”
“She, she’s a new girl, and Grey would be the one responsible for the other answers you need.” Principal Constantine said without looking up from his desk.
“We just need you to show her around school and explain other things-”
Ed stared at the girl who had just entered the principal’s office. She had broken a thousand school rules on her first day. Her hair was uncontrolled, her shirt wasn’t fully buttoned, and the way her tie hung loosely around her neck was an ick to him, but it didn’t supersede his interest in why she was there.
Her deep brown eyes fell on him before skipping to Principal Constantine and Gwen, who moved to stand behind the principal.
“Uh, hi?” Her voice was like the calmness in a spring garden.
“Welcome, Satori, to Redgate Academy. My name is Principal Constantine, and this is Ed Vayne, the president of the Red Council. He’d be showing you around the academy and helping you with your schedule,” he allowed Tori to take in the message before he continued. “I know you have questions about why you’re here, but you’re special, Satori, you’re not like the other humans. You have a gift, and we here at the academy would help you harness that gift for good.”
“How did you know where to find me, and why didnt anything happen until yesterday?”
“Well, it is always easy finding our own, and your powers were triggered in a stronger volume because you got older and your emotions were on a high. Grey told me you tore a werewolf into two with a wave of your hand.” Tori held her hands together, rubbing at the bracelet on her wrist. “It's nothing to be afraid of, it's only for you to know how to control your powers.”
“What am I?” Ed listened for an answer as his gaze swept over her frame once again. He couldn't place exactly what she is, but something about her screamed rarity. She didn’t have ears like the elves; he couldn’t even see her ears because of her hair. Neither did she have scaly skin or fangs.
“You are a hybrid.” Ed’s eyes widened. A hybrid? There hasn’t been a natural hybrid in the past hundred years.
“A hybrid? A hybrid of what? I am a human being, my parents were human-”
“Your family history is more than you know, Satori.” Principal Constantine said. “You can’t know everything about it now, but what's more important is that you harness your powers.” Tori could tell that he was holding back some important information.
“Ed here would help you settle in. He will take you through your schedule and help you get to classes.” She turned to Ed, who was already staring at her with a warm smile.
“Here’s her schedule. Tori, we will talk soon.” Tori opened her mouth to ask the principal a question, but was only cut short by Ed, who moved close to her.
“Let's go. Assembly starts in 25.”
…………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………………
Ed showed her the common room as they walked to the assembly hall, his voice was light but firm. She had caught him sparing glances at her when she was looking at the painting and right as she was looking at one of the founder's paintings she blindly bumped into him.
She rubbed her head, ready to apologise, when she noticed the five that were in front of Ed.
“What do we have here?” It was a lady, her black hair was a beautiful contrast against her olive green siren eyes. Her skin was slightly pale, and her heart-shaped face was very alluring. Her aura was like a deep pool to freedom and-
“Cassidy, stop it!” Ed snapped at the lady whilst blocking Tori’s view of her. It was then that Tori realised she may have been under a siren spell.
“What? I just wanted to see if she was weak enough to fall for the weakest link.” Cassidy said, adjusting her suit while eyeing Tori. “How are you even letting her walk with you dressed like that? She is breaking at least 10 codes of conduct, from the tie to the shoes, and let’s not even mention the hair-” Cassidy paused. “Unless she’s a werewolf.”
“I am not a werewolf.” Tori moved from behind Ed, staring at Cassidy with narrowed brows. She noticed that someone had been paying attention to her from the corner. It was Kairos.
“Oh, what are you, darling?”
“That’s enough, Cass, we don’t need to spend all day interogatting the newbie.” Tori turned to Kairos who had been leaning on the wall watching them. He held her gaze for a while, as if assessing what she was thinking before turning to Ed.
“Cass is right, she has broken exactly 12 of the code of conduct rule, and it doesn’t speak well of your administration Edward.” It was silent but Tori could feel the burning tension between the two guys.
She turned to Ed, who didn’t seem bothered by Kairos' response; instead, he had a sly smile on his lips.
“You know what? You’re right. It’ll be a bummer to see the new girl breaking a bazillion rules, so since it’s almost time for assembly, Kairos, I, as the head of the council, charge you with the task of making her look more presentable. You can help her with her tie and the other things. I and the rest of the council would go to prepare at the hall.”
Tori turned to Kairos, his eyes were narrowed and lips in a thin line. He didn’t like Ed instructions at all.
“Tori, you’re with Kairos now. If he’s unnecessarily mean to you, let me know.” He said, patting her back gently. “Let’s get going.” The hallway is cleared leaving Tori and a pissed off Kairos.
“Great now i have to babysit.” he muttered under his breath. Tori rolled her eyes at him. Her fingers picked at the loose tie around her neck and with determination she rolls it as she had seen her step father do.
“What do you think you’re doing?” She ignored Kairos while her fingers crossed the material. She doesn’t stop until his shadow looms over her, his scent overtaking her personal space, and his eyes boring deep into her head.
With a small sigh, she raised her head. “I am kn-” the rest of her words seized as her eyes fell on his face. His hooded eyes held hers, and she found herself examining his face subconsciously. There were light freckles around his nose, it was barely visible, but she saw them. Not only that, she noticed a small scar that had almost faded off on the right side of his brow.
“We have enough fly traps in the garden house; your mouth doesn’t need to be part of them.” He said, snapping her out of her trance.
“I’m not the one creeping into another person's personal space,” she muttered under her breath.
“What did you just say?” His voice was a threat that she didn’t want to find out the consequences.
“Nothing.” She lied through her teeth. She gasped when he reached out to her throat.
“Relax, I’m just trying to save myself the embarrassment of whatever it is that you knotted.” Her breathing hitched as his large hands fiddled with the tie on her neck; she could only look at his chest while he reworked it. Unlike her, his tie was neatly knotted and his uniform properly worn.
“You shouldn’t have allowed them to bring you here.” He muttered gently, earning her curiosity.
“What?”
“There’s danger lurking here-”
“Principal Constantine said i was safe here.” She whispered like her presence was a secret. Kairos scoffed, his hands pausing as his eyes met hers again.
“He’s not aware of what's coming, neither are you nor anyone in the school,” he said, his tone heavy with unrequited danger.
“And you do?” She pressed, hoping he was just messing with her, but his expression wasn’t one to fool around.
“What do you know?” she asked as his hands moved, pulling at the last knot.
“Don’t do anything stupid, Satori.” He warned, pulling away like she was hot coal. “Keep your head underwater and don’t make a scene, the assembly hall is this way,” she could only nod and followed after him, making sure to keep her distance while she processed his words.
Slowly her pace reduced, her eyes hazy, and light whispers carried her, her path changing. Now she walked towards a painting and she felt her hands move opening a lock, the painting moved revealing an alley. At the end of the dark alley was a hooded figure, just like the one she had seen the night before. Her body were moving on their own accord, her insides began to burn while her mind screamed for Kairos.
Suddenly, the hooded figure appeared in front of her.
“No kaladin shall live with the curse past the red moon.” The menacing voice aired before everything went black.
