The entire streets' inhabitants were silent so that even strangers could tell that something had happened to them. The inhabitants were like bread that fell into the water. “Why is everywhere silent?” Easton said. Cooper looked at some passersby to confirm what Easton had just said. “I think they are affected by the last war; I can see distresses boldly written on these people’s faces,” Cooper said. “You are right, Cooper,” Easton said. After a short walk, Easton and Cooper finally arrived at the palace. Two guards were standing at the gate when they entered. The two hefty men's faces were strange. The hefty men could recognize the chiefs' regalia though they hadn’t seen the chiefs before. “Long live, our chiefs,” Xavier and Lucas said. “May the ancestors bless you,” Cooper said. “Are you guards here?” Easton said. “Yes, my chief,” Xavier said. “But your faces are strange. Do you reside in this state?” Eaton said. “Yes, my chief,” Xavier said. Cooper looked at the guards' whole appearances. He looked at their dressings, shoes and all of their physical makeup. “Honestly, I haven’t seen these faces before. Cooper, have you?” Easton said. “I haven’t seen these faces too. This is a large state and you don’t expect us to know everyone,” Cooper said. “Well, you are right, Cooper,” Easton said. Noises were emanating from the interior part of the palace, from the inner chamber to be precise. The chiefs and guards could clearly hear these noises. “We are late for the meeting already!” Cooper said. “But what’s going on inside the palace? Why the yelling?” Easton said. “Let’s go and check things by ourselves,” Cooper said. “Alright. My distinguished guards, well done,” Easton said, and they walked in the direction of the inner chamber. As Cooper and Easton walked to the inner chamber, thoughts were running through their minds. “What’s making the king yell? I hope everything is fine?” Cooper thought. “This is the king’s voice? Who pestered him?” Easton sighed. The chiefs finally entered the palace. They could see the king standing and some other chiefs. The look on the king’s face shows even the blind that something was not right. “Greetings, my king,” Cooper and Easton said. King Rehoboth looked at Cooper and Easton’s faces, he took his gaze off them and walked away. “Greetings, my chiefs,” Cooper and Easton said. “Greetings, chiefs,” the other chiefs said. “Please, have your seats,” Emmett said. “Thank you,” Cooper and Easton said and sat down. “What happened to the king?” Cooper said. “We have been hearing the king's yells right from the gate. Who pestered him?” Easton said. “Well, nobody pestered him,” Theodore said. “The king is not mad that he would get angry without any reason. Besides, he unorthodoxly gets angry. So tell us what is going on?” Easton said. “Well, the king told us he wanted to get maids in the palace and we objected to that,” Parker said. “Maids?!” Easton said surprisingly. “Yes! The king said he needed maids to take care of him in the palace. None of King Rehoboth’s predecessors had maids in their regimes. So why should King Rehoboth desire such?” Emmett said. “I am flabbergasted. The king knows that it is not in the constitution of California for any king to have a maid… I mean just a maid. What could propel this desire out of the king?” Easton said. “Everyone was surprised when the king told us this. We were in a state of altercations and everywhere became rowdy,” Theodore said. “Why does the king think he can eat his cake and have it? The king sent his first wife away. We begged him to reconcile with her but he refused. Why is the king stiff-necked these days?” Parker said. As discussions were going on between the chiefs, Cooper was looking at the other chiefs. He refused to add to what was being discussed. The chiefs soon noticed Cooper's silence. “Cooper, you are not saying anything; why this calmness?” Theodore said. “I observed this too; Cooper, are you not concerned with what we are saying?” Emmett said. Cooper moved his legs backwards, he adjusted his sitting posture and cleared his throat. “I am very much concerned about the discussions,” Cooper said. “Then why are you silent?” Emmett said. “To me, I think the king should be allowed to get maids,” Cooper said. The other chiefs were astonished by what Cooper said. They looked at one another’s faces and kept mute. “My chiefs, you are mute,” Cooper said. “What do you want us to say?” Emmett said. “It appears as if we are rebellious, which we are not,” Theodore said. “Well, I didn’t say you were rebellious. I have reasons for what I have said,” Cooper said. “What are the reasons? Tell us, Cooper” Easton said. “The king has sent his first wife away, his second wife and daughter have been enslaved. For days, the king has been eating food purchased from food mongers. A whole king! This is very bad and doesn’t suit the royal family,” Cooper said. The chiefs looked at Cooper’s face. Easton moved his eyebrows upwards and downwards, and nodded his head in affirmation to what Cooper said. “My chiefs, I think Cooper's point is reasonable enough. The king should eat royally-prepared meals,” Easton said. “I also accede to what Cooper said, but our constitution doesn’t allow a king to have maids, so I see no reason why the constitution should be infringed now,” Emmett said. “What if the king marries another wife?” Theodore said. Theodore's suggestion hit the chiefs like a bombshell. They pondered on the suggestion. “Will the king accede to getting a new wife? Will the king reprimand us for this kind of suggestion?” these thoughts ran through the chiefs' minds. “I think Theodore should be given kudos for this; this is a good suggestion,” Parker said. “Yes, a very good suggestion for that, but will the king accede to this?” Easton said. “Of course! The king will accede to this. The king needs a woman to take care of him and let go of all his pains,” Cooper said. “Alright…, what of the queen that was enslaved?” Emmett said. “That is not a big deal; when she finally sees her way back to the palace, she will take her place as the first wife,” Theodore said. “Theodore, you are too brave for my liking,” Easton said. “Was that supposed to be sarcasm?” Theodore said, and everyone laughed. The chiefs agreed that king Rehoboth should marry a new wife, but the problem now is who has the temerity to face the king and tell him this? All the chiefs kept shifting duties to one another. “I suggest Theodore go and disclose this to the king because he gave the suggestion,” Emmett said. “No!! I can’t ; the king will get more annoyed when he sees me,” Theodore said. “Since Parker is the head chief, he is the king's heart…,” Easton said and Packer cut in. “And what are you trying to insinuate, Easton?” Parker said and grimaced. “Parker, you have a way of approaching the king as California's head chief,” Easton said. Parker looked at Easton as he talked, he prevented himself from showing off his anger at him. “I don’t blame you, Easton! My beloved chiefs, don’t mind this nonentity. Anyone can disclose this to the king, it is not limited to the head chief,” Parker said. Cooper could see that nobody was willing to face the king. He finally volunteered himself. “Since everyone, including the head chief, is afraid to face the king, I think I will go,” Cooper said. “Nobody is afraid of the king here,” Easton said. “The king is a human being like each one of us. I will go to his chamber now to give him a new resolution,” Cooper said, and walked away. The chiefs murmured among themselves as Cooper walked away. They hoped for a good aftermath.
