Chapter 10

Tala Hill I screamed at the top of my lungs. I subconsciously hit him in his shoulder with my free hand. My stomach almost flipped because of what Shaun did. I haven't done such things, jumping from one building to another while he was lifting me without stopping until reaching the high rise building where we are standing now. I even managed to get into a car with no brakes and spin around in the air when he dropped me. Before long I was taking deep breaths just to get my heart beating back to normal. My suspicion that he is not human only increased after seeing and experiencing what he did. Because no normal person would do what he had done. I was catching my breath while thinking about what happened in the hospital. Maybe Shaun did the same thing to get to the roof deck of the hospital without me realizing it. My curiosity to know what kind of creature he was became more intense. “Did you enjoy our little ride?” I snapped back to reality after hearing his voice again. His questions made me nauseous. He looked at me evilly, that annoying smirk still plastered on his face, and I hate it. “If you ever do that again, I will skin you alive,” I threatened while glaring at him. I just wanted to be with Maya and this motherfucker tried to unalive me. He smiled again. It only made my heart boil in annoyance. “I know you are threatening me and yet,” he reached for a few strands of my hair and twirled them with his fingers, “I find it rather sexy.” I caught my breath. Quickly, I felt the heat on my cheeks, his hot breathe touched my skin. I quickly looked away so he wouldn’t see my blushing cheeks. “Shut up.” To make me face him, he held my chin and raised my face. “You’re blushing,” he murmured, amused at my reaction. “Smile,” he said. “Not a grin or a silly smile, but a real, genuine smile,” he whispered in my ears. He looked at me straight in my eyes. “I like it.” My breath hitched. There was the strange thumping of my heart again. That unbearable thumping that if it continued, it would seem like I would die. I didn't want to feel these kinds of feelings that I couldn't understand, but this man in front of me continued to evoke those weird feelings in me. “What are you, really?” I found myself asking Shaun just that. Again, he gave me another smile. “As I've been telling you, what do you think?” He walked away and looked at the setting sun before us. I scoffed, annoyed at him. “I think that you’re a demon.” A demon with an angel’s face. I did not have the courage to say my thoughts out loud He laughed. “That’s the best you could come up with?” He was amused. “As far as I can tell, I don’t have horns,” he said, as a matter of fact. “Psh.” I rolled my eyes at him. “But not all kinds of demons have horns. Fiends and ghosts or monsters for one—” I stopped speaking because of a sudden thought. I violently turned to face him. “Oh, my God! Are you a s*x demon?” I asked, horrified at the thought that he might be one of them. Looking at him, his body, his face, his smile. I pursed my lips as I stared at him. Shaun was silent for a moment as if he couldn’t believe what he just heard. Then suddenly, he burst out laughing. He was holding his stomach while trying to compose himself. I look at him dumbfounded. “Wow, you really think I’m a s*x demon. Why? Do you fancy me?” He wink at me. I took a step back. He looked at me, that playful smile back on his lips again. “Why, Tala. Do you think dirty thoughts?” I violently shook my head, horrified at what I just heard. “What the heck? Me?” I asked. “It’s okay for me to be part of the fantasy.” He started walking towards me as I struggled to maintain my composure. He effortlessly grabbed my waist before continuing, “As long as you agree to be part of mine.” His breath was hot yet there's coldness in it. I struggle to breath as our bodies are touching again. I didn’t know how to calm my heart nor what kind of method I’ll do to stop it from pounding fast. I pursed my lips before turning away from him. How could this guy say all these inappropriate things to me? “L-Let me go,” I commanded, lacking conviction. I thought that he would be stubborn with me before letting me go, but to my surprise, he immediately obeyed and let me go. He did not waste the opportunity and immediately distanced himself. I breathe loudly as if a torn just pulled from my heart. I felt relief after he distanced himself. “Tala, even if I wanted to follow your wishes and let you go, I cannot do that,” Shaun suddenly said seriously. “We need Mayari.a We have searched for her for a long time. We almost gave up hope several times. But we finally found her. So we can’t just let her go.” “Psh.” I could feel the sincerity in every word he uttered. But that doesn’t mean that I will just leave Maya to these men. No. They won't be getting her. I will protect her even if it will cost me my life. I would die first before that happens. “Why do you need her this much?” I asked instead. “It feels like an obsession to me,” I commented. “Because she’s our only hope of ever finding our home,” Shaun answered, his voice full of longing. As if he had been looking for this so-called home for a long time. “We've been trying to find this scent for so long. I don't know what I will do if we're going to lose it.” I sighed. “The reason you are giving me is still not enough for me to let Maya come with you,” I said. “Then let’s go back,” he argued. “Listen to our story until you understand why we need her. Let us talk first before you let yourself get mad at us.” He held my hand. “Please?” he pleaded. His voice was gentle, and it touched a piece of my heart. I want to refuse and say that even if I hear more, it won’t change my decision. “Fine.” I even shocked myself after hearing what my mouth said. I thought I was strong enough to refuse yet I was beguiled by his pleading voice. Damn it! A sigh of relief escaped his mouth. He smiled again which made my heart beat speed up again. “Then let's go back," he excitedly said, like a boy getting his favorite ice cream. He was about to pick me up again but I immediately stopped him. “Nope! I’ve told you, haven't I? No more jumping. It made me sick,” I reminded him. I don’t want to experience those thing again. Just remembering it made me nauseous. I feel dizzy. “But how do we get back to the hotel of we’rr not going to do it?” he asked, confused. I sighed. “We will take a taxi,” I answered. “What? No,” he argued. “No. I'm the boss here. Do what I say or else I’m not going to hear your excuses. We will take a taxi to get there,” I said firmly. He was taken aback and I find it amusing. He looks like a puppy. “Yes, Your Highness,” Shaun said with a mocking bow. Then without a word, he pick me up like a bride. I almost scream. “H-Hey! You promised!” I shouted in a nervous voice. He smirks. “Well, Your Highness, we do need to go down,” he said while jumping from the building we were in. My scream got stuck in my throat. I just closed my eyes as my stomach felt like flipping out. My heart was beating fast. I was scared for my life but I feel trust in him. “We are down, princess,” he whispered in my ear. I quickly opened my eyes and glared at Shaun. If only I had the strength, I would have already kicked his butt. “Then put me down,” I demanded. Shaun put me down. “So where are we going to ride a taxi?” he asked. “Follow me,” I whispered. I started walking. If I was not mistaken, there was a busy street at the next corner, if I remembered correctly from the map I had studied before. I was about to turn a corner when a man suddenly blocked my path. He was wearing a black suit with a black hat. A black fedora hat. I can’t see his face perfectly. He was towering his head at me. “Hello there,” said the mysterious man in a russian accent. He removed the hat he was wearing and smiled at me. My breath stuck in my lungs. I couldn't move. It was as if I was nailed to my feet when I saw the color of the man’s eyes. It was red, bloody-red.
