Chapter 11
Shaun Smith
I was walking fast as I smelled something wrong in the air, a stench so strong it could only belong to one creature. I turned to the corner Tala had turned and my suspicions were correct. A man was standing not far from Tala, wearing an expensive three-piece suit. But that is not what is more remarkable about the man. It was his pale skin and blood-red eyes. When it smiled, a pair of fangs came out from his mouth. He even had the audacity to lick his lips.
A vampire.
I was stunned for a moment. He wasn't even trying to hide his identity. He blatantly showed his true self.
Worried, I looked at Tala, she was just standing there as if frozen. I immediately moved and used myself as a block between Tala and the vampire. The foul smell of the vampire hitting my senses. One of the smells I hated the most is the smell of things like him. A filthy scent of blood and madness.
“Tala,” I said, trying to look at her stunned face. She was motionless. “Are you okay?” She didn't move. It seems like she can’t see me. It feels like she was hypnotized. Her lips were trembling, slightly outstretched.
“Tala, can you hear me?” I tried to nudge her shoulder with my free hand but to no avail. She was stoned. I can’t even read her expression. “Hey, Tala.”
“A filthy mongrel,” said the vampire when he saw me. “Hmm. Interesting,” he added with a mocking smile.
My ears perked up when I heard what he called me. I took a glance at Tala who was still in an utter shock behind me. She was shaking furiously as if she had witnessed something unpleasant. I immediately thought it was the vampire's fault in front of us. I was suddenly filled with rage at the thought of what he had done to Tala.
I glared at the vampire with madness, my claws starting to elongate. “What did you do to her?” I asked, furious at his mocking smile.
He snorted. “I do not engage with dogs with no definable type or breed,” he answered. He had a stern look on his face. I became alert at what damage he might do to Tala. “Just give me the girl,” the vampire demanded.
I smiled at the vampire, a feral smile. I could feel my eyes turning yellow. A sign that I can no longer control the anger I feel. “When you touch even the tip of her finger, I will rip you to pieces, coldblood,” I threatened.
“Oooh scary," he mocked, laughing.
“Bastard,” I mumbled between my hitching breath.
“Pss. Lucky you, I did not bring my silver bullets. But I can still do this.” The vampire took out a gun from inside his coat and pointed it at an unconscious person on the other side of the road. The guy was just standing, unaware of the danger he was in. “What is faster, you or this bullet that will pierce through that guy's head? We’ll find out in three, two, one.”
The vampire fired the gun. I knew I had to save the guy but I also cannot just leave Tala alone. So I just did the first thing that came to my mind. I picked Tala up with one hand and ran as fast as I could to the other side of the road. I no longer care about the cars passing by. The beeping and the looks of the people.
I managed to get to the guy before the bullet hit him in the head. I shoved him out of the way causing him to sit down. The bullet grazed the side of my temple. As soon as people heard the sound of the gun, it immediately made the people run away. Even the guy I shoved ran away in horror. Screams erupted, people calling their loved ones, crying, people falling to the ground, running. There was total chaos.
I put down Tala. She was still shaking uncontrollably. I never thought that the girl who faced my three friends without any fear would be scared like this. I raised Tala’s face and stared straight into her eyes.
“Tala,” I called. “Look at me. Listen carefully. You do not need to be afraid. As long as I am here, I will never let anything bad happen to you. I will protect you until my last dying breath. You hear me? Hey, do you hear me, Tala?”
I was stunned for a moment. Realization hit me in the heart. That given moment, I realized how true those words were. That I am ready to face death, to sacrifice my own life for her safety. It was a very scary thought. Because I had never once thought of doing that for others, even for my friends. Only for Tala. Just what kind of hold did this girl have on me?
I don’t know, and I’m scared to know yet there's something in my heart that would want to.
“Tala, Please look at me,” I spoke almost pleadingly.
Little by little, Tala looked up and stared at my face. Her beautiful green eyes showed a flash of recognition until their shine returned completely.
“Shaun . . . ? She whispered. Her voice was trembling. She immediately clutched my hand. “Shaun!” she shouted as a sigh of relief escaped her mouth. “It’s you. Oh my God!”
I smiled in return. I let out a sigh of relief that I did not know I had been holding back for a while. “Welcome back, Princess.”
“Sorry to interrupt your reunion, I really need that girl. Give me that girl,” said the vampire who suddenly appeared behind Tala.
I immediately grabbed Tala and picked her up.
“f**k off, you bastard!” I whined before ensuring Tala’s safety. “I’m sorry, Tala, but I'm breaking my promise,” I said regretfully. Then, I ran. I ran as fast as I could to get away from the vampire.
