Chapter 12 Tala Hill My stomach almost flipped because of Shaun's sudden running. If this was really running. We passed by with a bunch of people like a hurricane. He even beat the one riding in a high-speed car because of how fast he was running. It was only right that he ran so fast because of the type of creature that was following us. A vampire, of all things. When I saw the vampire earlier, I felt extremely scared. My whole body was stiff and I couldn’t even move. It was the first time I faced a vampire again after the incident that happened ten years ago. Seeing the vampire once again brought back memories that I couldn’t forget no matter how hard I tried. And it only left me cold with fear. I looked up at the man I had been with for a while. I saw blood on Shaun's temple. I did not know what happened because I was blacked out momentarily. It must have been because he was protecting me. I feel guilty. But I remembered every word he said to me. How he would protect me, that he wouldn’t let me down. Other than Maya, there was no one else ever said that to me. And that was what woke me up from my puzzlement. I did not really expect that he would do that to me, especially when we barely knew each other. But knowing that he cared brought unexpected warmth and happiness to my heart. “You’re bleeding,” I said almost in a whisper. Shaun just grinned at me. “You should know by now that my kind heals very fast,” he proudly said. Yes, I know. I witnessed that when I fought his friends. The quick healing of Chester's wound and the quick recovery of Ridge when he hit the hard wall of the building. Fast healing ability, inhuman speed and strength, extraordinary sense of smell, I couldn’t imagine a creature with that kind of characteristic. So what was he really? “Hold tight,” Shaun said before jumping to another building. I did what he said. I clung unto him for my dear life. I was worried about Maya being alone with Shaun's friend. I looked down to see the vampire chasing us. He was there standing where were before. Perhaps it teleported to catch up with us quickly. We got down and continued to run. I turned to see if the vampire was close to us but I did not see him. Then the vampire suddenly appeared right beside us, pointing a gun at Shaun’s direction. It was too late before Shaun took action because the vampire pulled the trigger. Shaun just pulled his head back. It was the only choice. The bullet grazed across his forehead but not before he kicked the vampire in the stomach. He spath away from us as we entered a building. We were given a chance to get away from him. There was blood on my arm. I looked up and saw that Shaun’s forehead was bleeding. My eyes widened in horror. “You're bleeding!” I screamed in full panic. “It will heal,” he said smiling. He probably saw the worried look on my face. I bit the lower lips, sighing. Why can’t I do anything in this kind of situation! I can’t just do nothing and just let Shaun protect me. “Shaun, I need you to remove this metal in my neck. I need to help you,” I begged, full of determination to kill that vampire. He shook his head. “I am so sorry, Tala. I cannot do that, it’s not possible,” he said. “Look, I will not run away if that’s what you’re worried about. Even more so, it looks like the vampire is after me,” I argued. That vampire was after me. I need to fight back, and I need this thing to be removed. “No. That’s not all,” Shaun sighed. “Only Chester knows how to remove that.” My eyes widened in disbelief. “Are you kidding me?” I asked, panicking. “Sadly, no,” Shaun answered. “Let’s argue later. For now, we need to find a place where there aren’t too many people because that bastard is definitely not going to stop bothering us. I won’t be able to fight him properly if there are too many people to be affected.” I can’t help but feel admiration for Shaun even if it's not fit for the situation we were in. With this chasing going on, he still thinks about the welfare of the people around us. Not all creatures think like that. I wanted to help even more. I closed my eyes and remembered the map of Rome that we studied before in Geography class. Until finally I remembered something important. “There’s an abandoned building not far from here. I’ll tell you the direction to go there,” I said. “Nice,” he answered with that feral grin of his. Maybe that's his signature smile. I told Shaun the direction to the abandoned building. When we got inside, we immediately entered. Shaun put me down. “Go. Find someplace to hide. I’ll come to you right away once I’m done with that coldblood.” The term he used to identify the vampire did not escape my attention. I was speechless. So he was a cold-blooded vampire. “You want me to hide? Do you really think I’ll let you go and fight that vampire alone?” “Don’t worry, Dear, there’s no reason for you to hide,” said another voice from behind us. We both turned to the voice and saw the vampire chasing us standing in the distance. “Did you miss me?” the vampire asked. “s**t,” Shaun cussed and immediately hid me behind him. “You are quite persistent, aren’t you?” he asked, annoyed. “What can I say? I'm cute like that” said the vampire in that Russian accent accompanied by a smile, revealing a pair of fangs. I heard the crunching of bones in Shaun’s hand. I looked down and saw his claws, beginning to elongate, turning it into sharp claws. “Back off,” Shaun whispered softly to me. I did as he said. The moment I stepped back, an animal-like roar escaped from Shaun’s throat and he quickly rushed towards the vampire. The vampire teleported in front of me first, but before he could touch me, Shaun grabbed the vampire's arm. Shaun flipped the vampire on the floor without difficulty. The second time Shaun tries to knock the vampire down, the vampire pulls out the gun and shoots Shaun's body three times in a row. “Shaun!” I screamed as I tried to approach him. “Stay there!” he commanded. He let go of the vampire and slightly swayed. “Now I really regret not bringing those silver bullets,” said the vampire who was now standing again as if nothing had happened to him. In response, Shaun gave the vampire a strong blow to the face. The vampire turned around, but before the vampire hit any hard object, it suddenly teleported. Shaun turned to me and quickly ran towards me. When he got close to me, the vampire appeared right next to us. At that time, Shaun was ready. He gave the vampire a strong uppercut, he then gave a knee-kick to the stomach before kicking the vampire away. The vampire was unable to teleport again and he fell to the asphalt. Shaun was about to approach him when the vampire suddenly disappeared. I was not sure what happened next. When Shaun looked back at me, he immediately pulled me closer, we switched places and locked me in his arms. It was too late when I saw that the vampire had appeared and unleashed four daggers. And it all hit Shaun's back. Perhaps, the vampire knew that Shaun would protect me that was why he targeted me. “S-Shaun . . ” I whispered in horror and shock. “I-I’m fine,” he coughed blood. “Such heroic actions. You make me cry in envy,” the vampire mocked. I gritted my teeth in anger. All vampires are really the same. Every last one of them should just be eradicated. I was about to speak when another voice spoke. “Then why don’t you cry me a river, dickhead?” I turned and I was never so grateful to see Ridge. I helped Shaun stand up. “Ah. Another filthy mongrel. I see,” said the vampire as Ridge was approaching her. “It's good you're here, help—” “Take her with you,” Shaun said bluntly as he pushed me towards Ridge. “You take her,” Ridge said. “I will take care of this coldblood. I might boil him to warm him up,” Ridge teases with a smile. A feral smile showed on Shaun’s face, revealing his set of white teeth. Only then did I notice that Shaun's eyes were now yellow. “I will be the one who will finish this son of a b***h. Now, go take Tala, and take her to a safe place," he commanded. The two looked at each other for a few seconds, but in those few seconds it seems that they have reached a decision. Because Ridge suddenly picked me up and put me on his shoulder like a sack of rice. “Wait—what? Put me down!” I complained “Shut up,” Ridge replied as he started running. I heard that animal-like roar again. Before forever we got away, I looked back at Shaun again fighting the vampire. And what I saw almost took my breath away. An enormous black wolf, standing on four feet like the majestic hunter he was. And then I heard the wolf howl. “Oh my God . . . ”
