Chapter 13
Tala Hill
I was still in a state of shock even after reaching our destination. I was already standing but I still couldn’t get out of my mind what I saw earlier. Now everything is gradually becoming clear. But there was a part of me that still could not believe what I just realized. I shook my head. This is not the time for doubt. What I should be thinking about now is how to help Shaun. No matter how strong he was, it still wasn’t right that we just left him there, fighting that dratted vampire alone.
“We should go back and help Shaun,” I said hysterically.
Ridge turned to me, annoyed. “And what do you think you can do to help him? You will only be a burden to him. He won’t be able to fight well if you’re there,” he commented.
I clenched my hand. I know that, but I still could not stop worrying. I still could not resist the urge to help Shaun. “What are we doing here?” I just asked instead of trying to convince him to go back to Shaun.
I looked around and only then I noticed that we were in a forest park. No one was around at all. All I could hear was the hout of an evening bird. All my questions were immediately answered when someone just hugged me from behind. I glanced behind and saw Mayari. She was trembling. I suddenly felt guilty. During all these ordeals, my brother had disappeared from my mind. I faced her and held both of her shoulders.
“Maya, what are you doing here?” worried, I asked.
“We were attacked by a vampire, a coldblood to be exact,” Chester replied who was just behind Maya.
“But do not worry because we protected Maya,” said Tyron who was right next to Chester.
I immediately felt a rush of fear from what I heard. “Oh my God! Are you okay? Aren’tyou hurt?”
Mayari shook her head. “Tyron and Chester protected me,” she said, almost a whisper. I hugged her tight, thankfully nothing bad happened to her. I turned to the two men watching us. “Thank you,” I mouthed.
“There’s nothing to be thankful for. It’s our duty to protect Mayari,” Tyron said with a wide smile while Chester's answer was just a simple nod.
“Where is Shaun?” Chester asked, looking around for Shaun.
“Fighting another coldblood, apparently they were also attacked,” Ridge answered.
Mayari violently turned to me. “What? Are you serious? You were attacked too? Wait—Are you all right?” This time, it was her turn to fuss.
“I’m fine. Just like you, Shaun protected me,” I said, my heart sting because of nervousness.
I wanted to go back.
When I mentioned his name, I could not stop worrying. He fights alone with a cold-blooded vampire. A coldblood was a human turned vampire by a pureblood vampire. Purebloods were often called the true vampires, they are the strongest of all vampire classes.
Ever since the incident years ago, I have studied everything I can about vampires. Because I knew one day that a certain vampire would come for us, for Mayari. He said so himself, that he will come back for Mayari. And based on the attack on us today, it looks like that day has finally come. “What happened to the coldblood that attacked you?” I asked.
I saw Mayari's gaze drop to her shoes, maybe she witnessed what happened. I immediately held her hand, silently telling her that everything was going to be all right. I looked at the three men in front. I wasn’t surprised that Chester and Tyron were able to defeat the coldblood that attacked them. Especially not after what I saw earlier.
“Dead,” Chester simply replied as if it was nothing.
I was about to ask them about what was witnessed when we heard rustling of leaves in the woods. I thought someone had followed us again, but another creature came out of the woods. The enormous, black wolf I saw earlier, its yellow eyes shining under the moon. The wolf slowly approached us. Mayari hid behind me, afraid of the black wolf. I wanted to tell her that she had nothing to be afraid of, but I was so entranced by the black wolf that I couldn’t do anything but stare at it.
And I was very amazed at what I saw next. The body of the big black wolf gradually shrunk. Then its fur slowly disappeared. Its snout started to shrink, its fangs and claws retracted, until it took the shape of a man’s face. I gasped when I saw his face. Deep in my mind, I knew it was him but it was still strange to see the change in his form right in front of me.
It was Shaun. Its messy hair, its dark black eyes. And he was also buck naked. But despite that, I still couldn’t take my eyes off of him. Maybe it’s because Shaun’s body is full of wounds, gashes, deep cuts, wherever I turn my eyes, I only see wounds. Then suddenly, he fell down to the ground.
“Shaun!” I shouted. I quickly ran towards him. I knelt down beside Shaun who was unconscious, not knowing what to do because of so much blood and wounds visible.
Because of the amount of blood that I see, the memories are slowly coming back to me, haunting me again. But I managed to hold it in, that was not the right time for me to be haunted again. I had to help out Shaun.
“Hey, Princess,” he whispered in a hoarse voice with a smile. I did not even realize that the others were already there watching us.
I heard Chester sighed. “Those are really serious cuts, Shaun,” Chester said as if the person being examined was not his friend. He was also kneeling next to Shaun.
“You really got your ass handed to you, huh,” said Ridge as if mocking his friend. “Did you kill the cold blood?”
“The jerk teleported before I could bite his head off,” said Shaun who just laughed but that only made him cough blood. “Hey, Tyron, cover me with your shirt. I think I’m scaring the ladies with my nakedness.” He even had the audacity to wink at me. It made my blood boil in anger. I want to whack him in the face. I rolled my eyes at him but still worried I might cause another wound.
Tyron followed what Shaun said. He took off his shirt and placed it on Shaun’s sensitive area.
I couldn’t believe it, they were acting as if this was nothing. “Are you all crazy? He was bleeding furiously!” I said to them before turning to Shaun and glared at him. “And you, stop laughing. Your wounds are opening more and more, Tsk!”
He was about to speak but coughed up blood again. Even Mayari knelt down next to Shaun. “H-Hey, I can heal him,” Mayari said, looking at Shaun and back at me. I was taken aback by her actions.
“No,” Chester said.
“You can't and we won't allow it,” Tyron also said.
“W-Why? I can heal him if I want to,” Mayari argued.
“You are still not immortal. No matter how much you heal, this level of cuts will surely kill you. We can’t let that happen,” explained Chester.
“And besides, it will hurt,” Tyron added.
I silently scolded myself and I suddenly felt ashamed. Because I was actually considering my sister’s suggestion. I didn’t even think about the effect it would have on her because all I wanted was to save Shaun. I clenched my hand.
What is happening to me? Why am I even doing this?
I felt Shaun's hand on mine. I looked at him and even though it was difficult, Shaun still smiled at me. “I’ll be fine, Princess. I’ll still protect you, right?”
I smiled back in return. “You are an idiot.” I tried to hide my tears that I didn’t even know was starting to fall from my eyes.
“You're an i***t, Tala,” I whispered to myself.
