Chapter 9, First Dates
Keith's POV
I was so excited. I had a date this Saturday with Iris. I planned to have a romantic time with her. One date that was going to make sure to get her to go on many more dates with me.
Maybe be my steady. I knew other guys at the school were waiting for me to fail on this date. So that they could have their chance with Iris. But I sure was not going to give them that chance.
I had a feeling deep in me this was going to be a big moment in my life. Something was started. I could not pin point the feeling but I knew it.
I felt it in my gut. I went through my clothing picking out an outfit for Iris. One she might like. I wondered if she was as nervous as I felt about all this? We always had a fine time once we were together.
Like old friends talking on and on. That was how well we got along together.

"Ready for your big date tomorrow?" asks Laurie as she comes in my room.
"I am. Yes" I tell her.
"Try not to be yourself and you will do fine" she jokes.
I blush. "Shut up. When is the last time you had an actual date?" I challenge.
"I have dates. Not one at the moment lined up" she mutters.
"Do you think I should bring her flowers? Candy? Both? Nothing?" I worry. "girls like that sort of thing but won't she think I am trying too hard?" I worry.
"If I were you, I would get both" she points out.
"Get lost!" I mutter.
She laughs as she heads out of there. I thought to myself. A poem! I was good at writing songs. I could write a love poem for her.
That would woo her heart. Girls loved stuff like that. I sit down at my desk and begin to write her a love poem. Right from my heart to hers. I was pulling out all the stops for this date.

"Working on a new song Keith?" asks Danny as he comes in.
I groan. "I need to put a lock on this door" I mutter.
"I can help. We worked on songs before" he offers. He sits on my bed.
"This is not a song for the band. It is not a song at all" I tell him.
"What is it? Writing your living will?" he laughs at his own joke.
"No" I sigh. "Please leave can't I get privacy around here?"
"Come on I want to help" says Danny.
"You can't" I argue.
"Why?"
"Because this is a poem for someone. It is personal. Now beat it" I mutter.
I try not to get to angered at my little brother.
"Oh, for Iris?" he teases. "roses are red. Violets are blue. My name is Keith, and I smell like a zoo" he jokes. He makes a kissy face.
"GET OUT!" I order.
That was it. Danny laughs as he heads out of my room.
"Alone at last" I sigh. I shake my head then get back to writing.
I hear the phone ring downstairs.

"Keith phone call" calls my mom.
"I am busy can they call back?" I ask.
"It is Iris but I can tell her you will call back" mom tells me.
"I will be right down" I yell back at mom. I rush down to take the call. I head in the kitchen to take the phone call.
"Hello?" I answer.
"Keith?" she coughs.
"Iris you okay?" I worry.
"My little sister caught a cold. I caught hers this afternoon. I threw up and headed home from school. I am afraid I will have to cancel our date. I don't want to get you sick before your concert later this week" she worries. "I am running a high fever. The doctor is making a house call here soon"
"Oh, Iris that is awful" I sigh. "I was so excited for this date" I mutter.
"Me to Keith" she says before coughing. "I hope I did not give anything to anyone. Or my sister"
"We are fine over here. I hope you feel better Iris" I softly say.
"Thanks Keith. As soon as I am better, we can go on that date." she promises me.
"You promise?" I tease.
"I swear it" she laughs. "Talk to you soon. I am going to take a nap" she yawns.
"Sweet dreams Iris" I tell her before we hang up.
"Get dumped so soon?" teases Danny.
"Iris is sick so is her sister" I sigh. "so much for the date"
"You have another date lined up?" jokes Danny.
"He always does" says Laurie.
"No, I would not do that to Iris" I say.
"Wow this is serious" she says to me.
"I really care about her" I tell them.
"A new Keith Partridge. I like it" jokes Laurie.
"He creeps me out" says Danny.
I sit down on the chair at the table. I was bummed out.

"Why so blue?" mom asks me. I tell her.
"Why not do something romantic to let her know you care while she is sick?" mom asks me.
"Good idea. Once a boy brought me soup over his mom made. I loved that" says Laurie.
"Really?" I ask them.
"Yes, and you could bring that mushy poem to her to" points out Danny.
I am blushing now.
"I still have some chicken noodle soup from last night. I will reheat if and you can bring her some over" mom tells me.
"Thanks mom" I gratefully say.
Mom helps me out. I finish jotting down a poem for Iris, then I dress up as I would have for our date. Mom hands me a tupperwear of soup and Laurie got me flowers from our back yard to give her to. I feel a smile come on. This was going to show I cared.
"Wish me luck" I tell my family. I bring over the goodies to Iris.
I ring the doorbell.

"Keith we are all sick. We do not want you to get this" her mom worries.
"Can I see Iris for one moment?" I ask. I hand her soup. "From my mom" I tell her. "You all will feel better in no time with that" I brag.
"Thanks, young man" says her mom.
"Iris" calls her mom. "someone is here to see you"
"Coming mom"
Iris comes down in her nightgown. She is blushing as she covers up more when she sees me there.
"Keith. I don't want to get you sick" she worries.
"I won't stay long. These are for you and this" I say as I hand her the flowers and the note.
"Keith thank you" she gushes happily.
"You are most welcome" I tell her.
"This means the world to me" she tells me.
I smile and she smiles back. She looked tired out. Dark circles under her pretty eyes. She coughs a bit.
"I better get inside. Thank you Keith" she says.
"There is soup for you to. Your mom has it" I tell her.
"I feel better already thanks to you Keith" she says before going in and shutting the door.
I smile as I head back inside. That really felt good to make someone else feel good. I head back home. The date maybe canceled for now.
But this was a special moment I would never forget.
