Chapter 10, I Woke Up
In Love This Morning
Iris's POV
I reread his love poem at least a dozen times. We had not had our first official date yet and here he was bringing me gifts.
Keith was so romantic. I was finally over my cold. I was of course having to go to school. I had a long day of catching up on my home work I missed. Pretty soon I was going to be taking tests for college.
Though I was not sure I wanted to go to college. Not that it was a bad thing. College was not for everyone. My parents had met at college.
If I went to college, I was not sure what my major would even be. So why try to get into a college if I did not know what I wanted to work for? Mom was going to be angered with me if I did not try to go to college but she would get over it.
Someday.
I glance around. No one was there by my locker. I reread Keith's poem one more time before heading to class.
No boy ever wrote me a poem before. I had gotten notes from boys saying your pretty go out with me. Things like that. But never a love letter. No poem. Not like this. It made me swoon inside.

"Who is that from?" asks Marci Nolan. She grins.
She makes me jump.
"No one" I tell her as I blush and try to fold the note up.
"Oh, Keith Partridge huh?" she giggles.
"Yeah..." I admit with a smile.
"He wrote me one about two years ago. Asked me out. I was blown away by his words. I said yes. We had a few dates. I thought he liked me. Then he moved on to Lisa Monroe. But that happens with celebrities' like that" she points out. "at least they notice you"
"Keith sent you a poem before to?" I mutter as my heart sinks a bit.
She nods. "He writes all their songs. So of course, he can write a love poem at the drop of a hat" she giggles. "wow he is a good kisser. Tons of fun to be with. But do not let your heart get set on him. Once you do he is gone" she warns me.
"Who are you talking about?" asks Lisa as she walks by.
"Keith Partridge"
"Did he ask you out again?" wonders Lisa curiously.
"No, he is after new girl here. Iris. I was warning her about him. Not to fall in love" laughs says Marci.
"Girl don't do that" warns Lisa. "he is heart breaker"
"Hi Iris" says Laurie.
"Gotta run bye guys" says the girls. They head off together.
"What was that about?" asks Laurie curiously.
"They were telling me about how Keith asked them out. And he broke their hearts. Did he write them poems to?" I can't help but ask.
Laurie frowns. She nods. "Keith used to be a player type. But I think he has changed since he met you, I have not saw him like this before"
"I think maybe it's best if we stay friends. Maybe me getting sick was a sign to be friends" I sigh.
"Don't do that" warns Laurie. "don't listen to the crowd. Listen to your own heart"
"I don't know" I worry.
"Lisa did not mention she was dating two other guys while dating Keith did she?" asks Laurie.
"Well no!"
"Well she was. She strung Keith along" points out Laurie. "and that Marci has dated nearly everyone in the school. She likes to have all men pay attention to only her"
"One of those kinds?" I say. She nods.
"I will say Keith could play the field. But I really think he has changed since you came into his life. Talk to him. Get to know the real Keith" she says. "don't let jealous girls get in your way"
"Thanks Laurie" I say softly.
She smiles. "That is what friends are for"

We walk to class together. When I get out of class I find Keith waiting by the door.
"May I walk you to class? And I can carry your books for you" he offers. Laurie winks at me. He looked so cute today. Wearing a brown striped shirt. Brown slacks.
"Sure" I agree with a nod. I hand him my books.
"Isn't your next class halfway opposite from Iris class though?" laughs Laurie.
Keith is blushing.
"I do not mind" he tells me.
"I don't want you to get in trouble for being late" I say to him.
"I will be fine" he scoffs.
"See you guys later" says Laurie as she heads to her class.
"Can I....never mind" he softly replies. He looks a bit shy.
"Can you what?" I ask as I walk down the hall with him.
"Can I hold your hand?" he wonders.
"Yes" I say with a nod. I hold my hand out to him. And with his free hand he holds mine. Lacing our fingers together. Now I am blushing. He walks me to class.
He was being so sweet.
"Thanks. We are here" I giggle as I get to my class down the hall way around the corner. He hands me my books back.
"Want a ride home after school?" he wonders. "we could get a taco on the way home" he offers. "it won't count as our real first date. I just would like to spend time with you"
"I would like that. Yes" I agree. He smiles.
The bell rings.
"I better get going" he sighs. He touches my arm with his hand. "see you later"
"See ya"

I smile as I watch him jogging off to his class. My hand still felt warm from him holding my hand in his. I hear the warning bell going off. Then I head in my class with a smile on my face.
After school Laurie and Keith were waiting for me outside the building. We were going to get a taco. I walk with them to their car. We head off into town. Laurie lets me sit up front with Keith.
"Such a nice day out" Laurie tells us.
"Sure is" agrees Keith.
We get to the taco stand in town. Kids were already there after school. It was packed full.
"What kind of soda do you girls want?" asks Keith.
"Diet cola for me" says Laurie.
"7up for me please" I answer. He nods.
Then he goes to get it. We get a table to sit at.
"I am glad you did not pay attention to those girls today" says Laurie. "Keith looks so happy today." I blush.
"He makes me happy to" I admit.

I notice Keith at the stand waiting in line. Girls flocked about him. Talking to him. Then he was ordering our food. He makes his way back. Then hands us our food.
"Laurie was telling me about what Lisa and Marci said" pipes up Keith as we enjoy our food.
"Yeah" I mention.
"I am sorry she did that to you" he tells me.
"Me to. It is nothing to worry about" I promise him.
"Yes, back then I never really dated someone steady. But I never had found someone I wanted to go steady with" he explains.
"I can understand that"
"It makes you make foolish mistakes and that makes people look bad. I hope you will still give me that chance. I meant every word in that poem I gave you and I wanted you to know that" Keith rambles out nervously.
"Keith, I loved the poem" I softly say.
He beams with a happy smile. "Good. Can I ask you something Iris?"
"Yes?"
"Are you free this saturday?" he wonders.
"I am yes"
"Can I take you out on that date?" he asks me with hope in his eyes.
I nod. Then smile as I look him in the eyes.
"Yes, you may Keith" I answer.
He sighs looking pleased.
Laurie winks at me then grins.
"Thank you for this chance with you Iris. I promise I won't blow it" he tells me.
I had a feeling he was being sincere. Just a feeling in his words. I was a pretty good judge of character. I could hardly wait for this week to fly by. So we could have our first date together.
Happy birthday in heaven
David Cassidy Aka Keith!!
