-I don’t think I’ve ever run this fast before. I reached the other side of the pond in seconds and started sprinting through the forest towards the house. I could barely breathe, but the adrenaline kept my body going. I kept running until my feet suddenly couldn’t keep up with me and I fell face first down to the ground. I turned around the same moment as the wolf made a move to jump at me. This is it I thought to myself while closing my eyes. -

Chapter one
My name is Talia. But most people call me Lia. By most people I mean my best friend Ky. I’m a 17-year-old girl living the life no one would want. My life has never been easy or fair for that matter, but I never complained. I always tried to make the most of what I've got. The only thing I couldn't make the most out of was the lack of parents. I never had real parents to give the love a kid so desperately needs.  My mother and father died in a fire when I was a baby. At least that was what I had been told. I don’t know much of them and the only thing I have left is a necklace that I had been told belonged to my mother. A necklace that I wear every day.  Since then I have switched from foster home to foster home, none of them being permanent. I don’t know why, but I don’t seem to fit in anywhere. I have stayed with my current foster family for the past year. And to be honest, they couldn’t care less about me. They only care for the monthly paycheck they receive. That is until I turn 18 in 3 weeks.  That is also why I’m spending most of my time with my best friend Kyle. Without him, I wouldn’t have made it this far. Let’s just say that the situation at home is strained. My foster dad Eric, drinks a lot, and my foster mom Kiana, pushes his buttons every single day. His rage over her is usually being taken out on me.  Today probably won’t be any different I thought to myself while walking home after a study session with Ky.  Walking through the front door I noticed the empty beer bottles on the table and on every other surface of the house. Just like always.  Fast and silently I snuck past the living room and sprinted up the stairs.  "Just 3 more weeks,”, I mumble under my breath as I close the door to my room.  My room is nothing like a normal teenager’s room. I have a bed and a closet.  That’s it.  I quickly changed to my pajamas and jumped under the covers, hoping to fall asleep before all hell breaks loose. However, after a while, my hopes fall. I hear the usual yelling and fighting, the empty bottles and cans being thrown across the room. I hid under my covers trying to ignore it when suddenly a loud crash made me jump in shock. I knew I shouldn't but I chose to get out of bed and open my door to peek outside.  Silence filled the hall.  I walked out to the top of the stairs to see what’s going on which was probably the biggest mistake I could have made.  My foster dad was hovering over a sobbing Kiana with a broken beer bottle in his hand. He made eye contact with me just before he began to stumble up the stairs towards me. I knew I should have moved. I tried to but my feet wouldn't let me.  I stood there paralyzed with fear knowing what was to come. He grabbed my wrist and yanked me forward.  “This is all your fault,” he spat.  I could smell the beer on his breath. It was so distinctive that I could almost taste it myself.   Too afraid to say anything I just bowed my head avoiding any further eye contact.  “Look at me when I am talking to you!” he yelled while pulling me through the hallway.  “Let go of me,” I pleaded as I could feel my wrist twist.  The burning sensation was enhancing by the minute.  “Shut up,” he muttered while dragging me along.  “This is all your fault. Before you came to this house there were no issues,” he slurred.  That made me stop in my tracks. I yanked my wrist from his grip.  “Then why won't you just let me go?” I yelled.  I didn’t know where the sudden courage came from, but I was beyond tired of being blamed for his own behavior.  The next thing I knew, the burning sensation spread across my cheek after his hand collided with it.  “Don’t you dare talk back to me, you are nothing, no one, you got it?” he slurred with a smirk, obviously very proud of his act.  Out of instinct I rolled my eyes and got an angry glare in return. We stood still for a few seconds while I could see his body starting to tremble along with the look he gave me changed. In the blink of an eye, he charged towards me.  “Looks like I, have to teach you some manners,” he snickered while trying to grab my arm once again.  I flinched and moved back to avoid contact only to find myself back at the top of the stairs.  I turned around and started to run down as fast as my feet would carry me.  To my surprise, he was closer to me than I had initially thought and got a hold of my ponytail. I shrieked in surprise when my head was yanked back only to be released shortly after, causing me to lose all balance and falling forward tumbling down the stairs.  The last thing I saw before everything went black, was him walking past me, leaving me on the floor.  I woke up, still laying on the floor. The house was dark except for the dim light coming through the window. Kiana is no longer on the floor where I had last seen her and Eric must have left as well.  My head was pounding badly. I took my hand to the back of my head where it hurt the most only for my fingers to be met with a big bump and something wet?  Blood.  I sighed as I dragged myself up from the floor, grabbing the rail for support.  I just needed to get to my room.  I would be safe there I thought to myself knowing that it was a lie. The second I reached my room I stumbled towards the bathroom and closed the door before heading towards my mirror.  The girl looking back at me looked exactly like how I felt. Like complete s**t.  My blonde hair was drenched in blood and small drops were slowly making their way to the ends of my hair, before falling on the floor. My face was pretty bruised up as well. I needed to get out of here. I couldn't stay here any longer. If I did, he would surely end up killing me.  I quickly went to my bed to find my phone, dialing the only number I had in mind.  Please pick up I thought after the third ring.  “Hello,” a groggy voice says.  “Ky? I’m sorry to call so late,” I said with a shaky voice as I look at the time.  03:40. Wow, I was passed out for a long time this time.  “Lia? Is everything okay?” he asked, the worry clear in his voice.  “Yes... I mean no. I mean can you come to get me? Please?” I begged.  “Sure. I’ll just get dressed. I’ll text you when I’m there,” he said while fumbling around before hanging up.  I grabbed my backpack, some clothes, my charger, and of course my diary, before checking my phone.  'I’m here' I headed towards my door while praying to whatever god that existed, that my foster dad was passed out drunk somewhere, so he wouldn't hear me leave. I made my way down the stairs only to notice my blood on the floor where I had been laying before.  My body began to tremble as I grabbed the door handle, twisting it slowly. The second I opened the door I could see Ky sitting in his car waiting for me. His eyes met with mine and they widen with shock.  He jumped out of the car and rushed to my side.  “What happened to you?” he whispered the same time I let out a relieved sigh.  That was the last thing I heard before I let the darkness take over.
