WE CLOSED ON THE four properties the week after we got home and immediately began putting in some very long hours. We had the electricity turned on in the first two properties to be renovated, and we had the locks changed on all of them. The first house on the list was a three-bedroom bungalow on Forbes Street in a desirable part of Riverside. Mike and I went over there every day after work, frequently staying until bedtime. We pulled up a ton of ratty-looking shag carpeting and discovered the original 1920s hardwood floors. They were in excellent shape, and after we’d completed all the repairs that involved carpentry, we rented a sander and sanded them down. With new stain under several coats of polyurethane, the floors were gorgeous.
