Chapter 5 Elena Adams ~•~ “Elena, I’ve been trying to reach you! Why didn’t you answer your phone?” My mom asked as soon as I answered the phone. “Are you okay?” Before I could respond, she continued. “Lucas called me and told me about everything. I want you to know that you’re not alone.” I released a long breath. “Okay, Mom. Thank you…” I said softly. “And before you tell me that you told me so, I need you to know that I’ve already learned my lesson.” “So you’re really getting a divorce?” she asked curiously. “Mom, I don’t have any money saved to get a new place. You know Lucas was in charge of all the accounts.” “Elena! Are you being serious right now?” I nodded slowly. “Yes. So I am not sure if this is the right time to file for a divorce. I don’t have anywhere else to go.” She let out a sigh. “Just pack your things, I’m coming to pick you up. I can’t sit back and watch you stay with that man because you don’t have anywhere to go.” I couldn’t help but laugh. “What are you talking about, Mom? Do you expect me to stay in that small house with you and your husband?” She hesitated for a few seconds. “I don’t stay there anymore. We ended things about a month ago,” she replied. “I’ve been meaning to tell you, but I wanted to be certain about this one first.” I gasped. “What? There’s a new one?” “Hey, don’t judge me, but yes,” she answered. “We are even married.” “Married?” I exclaimed. “Yes,” she replied cheerfully. “I would have invited you, but you made it clear to me that you were tired of attending the weddings.” Fair enough. But I still didn’t understand how she always found a way to move on so quickly. I knew that moving on from Lucas wasn’t going to be easy for me. “And this one? He’s a billionaire,” she continued. “There are so many rooms here and you can come over to stay with us until you get back on your feet. And he’s been meaning to meet you.” “Wow… that’s a lot to unpack.” My mom laughed. “The only pack you need to be thinking about right now is packing your bags. I’ll be there to meet you in an hour.” Before I could even get the chance to protest, she ended the call. But I had no choice but to pack my things. Even though I wasn’t comfortable with living with her new family, I knew it was better than staying under the same roof with someone like Lucas. He thought he could trap me because I didn’t have anywhere else to go, but I couldn’t let him win. About an hour later, I was done packing a few things I needed. My mom was already waiting for me outside. It was a good thing Lucas had gone out. When I got outside, my mom stepped out of her car and pulled me into a warm embrace. “We will talk about everything when we get there,” she murmured on my shoulder. “It’s going to be okay.” “I hope so.” We got into the car, and she started driving to the house. Throughout the ride, she kept telling me about her new life and how awesome it was. “I don’t even have to work anymore. I mean, where has he been all my life?” She smiled as she spoke, her eyes glued on the road. I couldn’t help but smile too. My mom seemed excited and I was happy for her. Even if she never admitted it, she was unlucky when it came to love. I guess it was hereditary. “Mom, I hope this one lasts,” I said genuinely. “Yeah, I hope so too,” she replied with a nod. “And he’s got kids too… one is around your age. I’m sure you’ll be good friends. Or should I say, siblings?” I groaned, sinking deeper into the passenger seat. “Mom, please… I’ve lost count of how many temporary ‘siblings’ I’ve gotten from you.” She laughed lightly, patting my knee. “Don’t worry. I know how it sounds, but this time it’s different. I’m not going to let this one go.” The rest of the ride was quiet, the only sound was the music playing from the car stereo. Soon enough, she pulled into a private road. I looked through the window and was in awe when I saw all the luxurious houses. “Damn, this new husband is really rich.” “I told you…” she replied with a proud smile. “Wait until you see his own mansion.” “How did you even meet him?” “At a party.” “Wow.” We were still talking until we got to the gate. The security had to search the car before they opened the gate. “Even for his wife?” I asked with a hint of amusement as we drove inside. “It’s protocol, and they only did it because they saw a new face.” It was indeed a mansion. And everything about it was screaming luxury. I couldn’t wait to see who the man was. When we got into the house, my mom led me to the living room, then she asked one of the staff to take my luggage to my room. I already had a room? Interesting. While I sat on the couch, a boy came down the stairs. He looked like he was around my age but a little bit older. “Is this my new sibling?” I whispered to my mom. He looked a little bit familiar, but I couldn’t place a finger on where I’d seen him. “Yes… this is Chase,” she said loud enough for him to hear. “Chase, this is Elena… my daughter.” Chase walked closer to me and extended his hand for a handshake. I took his hand. “You look beautiful… You’re welcome to our home.” I smiled. “Thank you.” He didn’t let go. His grip was firm. His gaze was fixed on me. And he didn’t look at me like I was his new sibling, there was something else in his eyes. “Nice to meet you, Elena.” I blinked, trying to shake off the strange feeling. “Nice to meet you, Chase.” He still didn’t want to let go until I tried to pull my hand away. Then he turned over to my mom. “Dad will join both of you downstairs soon. I’m going for a ride.” Chase winked at me before he finally left the living room. What was that supposed to mean? Was my step-brother flirting with me? “You’re going to love Damien!” My mom said as she sat down beside me. “Who is Damien?” I asked, confused. “My husband.” “Oh, I didn’t—.” “He’s here,” she cut me off as she announced. I looked up, and I wasn’t prepared for who I saw. My heart skipped multiple times and I wanted the ground to open and swallow me. My new stepfather was the same stranger I’d had a one-night stand with the previous night. Could I really pretend like I didn’t know him when every inch of my body still remembered exactly how my new stepfather felt inside me?
