I hear a knock on the door. I got up to answer it. It's Melanie. Looking as cute as ever. I'd wake up to see her face any day. Honestly, I'd be mad having my sleep interrupted, but for her, I'll make an exception.
Melanie: You got anything planned today?
Me: Just gotta finish up the image for my dad. Why, what's up?
Melanie: Do you maybe want to hang out?
Me: Sure. Just give me ten minutes. You can wait inside.
I headed into my room. I grab whatever and throw it on. Just hang out, no need to dress to impress. I head to the bathroom, brush my teeth, and wash my face. After I'm done, I go back to the living room. She looks me up and down, then says I don't dress like a photographer.
Me: Oh yeah. Then how do we dress?
Melanie: I don't know a dress shirt and jeans, I would assume.
Liam: Only when I have to be professional.
We went outside. Gwen borrowed dad's car to go to work. I was walking when I noticed she stopped. She looks around worried.
Melanie: We're walking?
Me: Yeah. Gwen has the car.
Melanie: Ok. I was just wondering.
Me: My baby will be here soon.
Melanie: Your baby?
Liam: Yeah. My baby. You'll love her.
She looks completely confused. I find it cute. I leave her in suspense, and we head off to my favorite coffee shop. We get our coffee and head to the park. We talk about whatever comes to mind and I realize she and I have so much in common. My phone started to ring. It's my dad. I excuse myself to answer the call.
Me: Hi papà.(Hi dad.)
Dad: Ciao figlio. Sei occupato?(Hi son. Are you busy?)
Me: Appena uscito con un amico. Perché, che cosa succede?(Just out with a friend. Why, what's up?)
Dad: Il mio responsabile IT non ha potuto lavorare oggi. Puoi portargli il progetto?(My IT manager couldn't work today. Can you take the project over to him?)
Me: Si papà. Sarò lì a breve.(Yeah dad. I'll be there shortly.)
I hung up the phone and headed back over to Melanie. She's looking around the park. I don't want this to be over, but my dad needs me. I let her know I had to go. She gives me a hug and starts to walk home. Before I knew it, I'd grabbed her hand.
Me: Actually, would you like to join me?
Melanie: Really?!
Me: Yeah. It's just an errand. Nothing top secret.
I hailed us a cab, and we went to my dad's company. I didn't tell Melanie that Kai hadn't come to work. When we get there, we head straight to my dad's office. I knock and let myself in. Melanie followed behind.
Me: Hey dad. I brought my friend--
Dad: Melanie!
Melanie: How do--
Dad: How could I forget a face such as yours? How's married life?
Melanie: Not great. We haven't even started planning it. But I don't see it happening.
She sounds sad as she says those words. I got the paperwork from my dad.I asked Melanie if she could give me and my dad some privacy. She nods and steps out of the office. I am not sure if she'll be listening, but just to be safe, I speak in Italian.
Me: Papà, Sara deve essere licenziata. (Dad, Sara needs to be fired.)
Dad: Perché? Cosa è successo? Pensavo che la amassi? (Why? What happened? I thought you loved her?)
Me:Papà, ci siamo lasciati anni fa. Ricorda che per questo hai licenziato Mark. Era a causa sua. (Dad, we broke up years ago. Remember that's why you fired Mark. It was because of her.)
Dad:È successo di nuovo qualcosa del genere? (Did something like that happen again?)
Me: Penso che lei e Kai stiano combinando qualcosa. Ecco perché Melanie sta mettendo in discussione il matrimonio. Se dovessero finire, devono farlo da soli, non a causa di qualche arrampicatrice sociale. (I think she and Kai have something going on. That's why Melanie is questioning the marriage. If they end, they need to end on their own, not because of some gold digger.)
Dad: Va bene, me ne occuperò. (OK, I'll deal with it.)
She asks about Kai and Sara. He tells her neither of them came to work. Her mood changes and soon we're out the door headed to Kai's place. When we arrived at his apartment, a guy with tattoos answered the door. He seems shocked but still greets Melanie and me.
Melanie: Leon, this is Liam. Mr. Elec's son.
Leon: Nice to meet you.
Me: Same here.
Leon: I don't know what's up with Kai. He hasn't been out of his room all day. He has been on the phone alot though. Thought it was you he was talking to.
Melanie: Nope. We haven't spoken since yesterday. I'll go check on him.
Melanie grabs the papers from me and heads to his room. She comes back shortly. Papers still in hand. A pained expression on her face. A few moments later, who I'm assuming is Kai comes out in just his boxers. He's followed by a girl who I know all too well.
Me: Sara?!
Melanie's suspicions were right. Once I said her name, Melanie got ready to charge at her. She mentions she's carrying his child and Melanie loses it. Next thing I know, Melanie grabs her stomach.
Me: Melanie, you ok?
Melanie: I'm....in.....pain
Leon: s**t! She might be having a miscarriage.
I called 911 immediately and took her into my arms. Kai tries to get near her, but Leon stops him. I can't believe he would do this when he knew she was pregnant. I lifted her into my arms in a princess carry. He comes for her again and is shoved against the wall.
Leon: I think you've done enough.
I looked over to Sara, not feeling anything about the situation. Like all that matters is, she isn't losing hers. I almost saw a smile creeping on her face. I hate them both so much right now.
Melanie: I don't feel good. I feel dizzy.
That's the last thing she says before she takes her ring and throws it at Sara, who picks it up and starts wearing it. Admiring on her finger. I started to feel something wet on my arm. I looked and it was red.
Me: Damn it! She's bleeding. This is bad.
I hear the ambulance just as she starts to black out. I say a little prayer for her. Melanie, please hang in there. I promise I'll make everything better. Just hang on and wait. You'll have everything you deserve and more.
