UNAWARE THAT WHAT HE was thinking was being discussed by the detectives who had just left, Jeremy, who preferred to be called Jez, sat on the sofa and thought back over the past hour or so. Foremost in his thoughts was what to do. None of the questions from the detectives had made it clear that they suspected him of killing Ellen, but he couldn’t help thinking that if they didn’t suspect him, they wouldn’t have questioned him. It was only a matter of time, his active imagination told him, before they established that his alibi was worthless - it had been just about one a.m. when he made it to his parents’, not midnight as he had said, and thanks to breaking the speed limit pretty much the whole way there, which they were sure to discover thanks to the speed camera he had been caught on,
