39 There was no way for Nathan to know it, but his description of Hannay’s circumstances was almost spot on. Limping along, his cries of pain stifled by his tightly-clenched jaw so that only whimpers escaped him, Jez made it almost two miles before he decided it was safe for him to stop and rest. Not that he had much choice by then, a second attack of cramp, almost as severe as the first, slowed him still further, until the only way he was going to continue without a break was to crawl.
