Chapter Five

Maya’s POV Once I sat down on the seat the strange woman had pointed at for me, I felt a powerful surge of energy enter into me. Stella kept looking at me with disdain, but I couldn’t care less. The voice inside me screamed with joy. People started trooping in and kept giving me strange stares, as if they were wondering what the hell I was doing there, to put it mildly. Some sniffed the air once they entered the dining room and looked in my direction, literally growling. Internally, I was squirming like s**t, but outside I had my calm facade on. They kept on chattering among themselves, and no one was ready to eat, so I picked my fork up to start eating. There was an immediate silence. I looked up to find everyone staring at me like I had killed their favorite animal or something. I kept hearing growls. What the hell is with these people and growling? "Maya dear," the woman touched my arm lightly. "We have to wait for the Alpha to arrive before we can start eating." Stella scoffed in disdain. "She doesn’t even know anything about us, yet you let her sit on that chair. I don’t really get you, ma’am." I was beginning to hate this girl. I quietly dropped my fork, and the chatter resumed immediately. After about five minutes, they suddenly became quiet again. What was going on with these people? I sat upright quietly, waiting for the person to arrive. Then I felt the presence — the overbearing cold presence that made warm tingles move from my head to my toes. My stomach began twisting, my limbs were shaking, and I was literally vibrating. A man stepped in, and my mind went haywire. He sniffed the air, and his eyes went straight to me. I felt him walk toward me, and the voice in my head kept chanting, "MATE! MATE! MATE!" He took the seat in front of me and picked up the fork, and almost immediately, everyone started eating. I hesitantly picked up my fork because I could feel the burning stare on my face. My right hand kept shaking; I had to use my left hand to steady it. What is wrong with me now? Why this intense reaction to a man I have never met? I turned my head and saw them inhaling their food metaphorically because their plates were almost empty. I stared at my barely eaten plate and decided to call it a night. I sat down and waited till the rest were done eating and left the dining hall. The strange man had left a while ago, and my mind finally cooled down. "It’s nice to officially meet you, Maya. I have heard so much about you." The woman turned a little to look at me. "Uhmm... you have? May I ask from where?" I fidgeted a little with my hands. "Your dad, of course. You have grown so much since I saw you. You grew to be such a beautiful lady." She looked at me with starry eyes. This woman was definitely not normal because I had not come to this place before, so how could she have seen me? "Thank you..." I looked to her expectantly. "Ohh..." She laughed. "You can call me Charlotte." I stretched my hand for a shake, and she pulled me for a hug. It was quite uncomfortable because we were on the chair, but she managed to hug me for a long time. I squirmed away from her grasp. "Sorry, I have just been waiting too long to see you that I got carried away." She stood from her chair and began walking to the door. Suddenly she stopped, turned back, and looked at me. "It’s a pleasure to see you again, Maya," she said and waved. The woman was a weird creature for sure. I stood from my chair and tried to find my way back to my room. I needed to call my father. He could not just leave me here without any warning whatsoever. I also wanted to know why I had no memory of this place and if these people were members of a cult or something. On my way back to my room, I passed the kitchen. I intended to find the girl that directed me to the dining hall to ask if she could show me the way to my room. I wasn’t interested in roaming around the mansion just to find it. When I entered the kitchen, it was surrounded by tense silence. Everyone was quiet and looking at two girls in the corner. Walking closer, I found out that it was Stella and a very beautiful girl arguing with each other. I had no intention of watching their intense argument, so I turned to the nearest maid and asked her the direction to the guest room. When suddenly... "You rat! What are you doing here? Who do you think you are to come into this kitchen and try to order my employees around?" Stella looked at me with so much disdain in her eyes. I wondered what I had done to make her hate me so much. "I wasn’t ordering anyone..." I was trying to explain myself when the beautiful girl suddenly cut in. "Who are your employees?" She scoffed. "Stella, it seems like you have forgotten your place in this house. You are just a parasite and a leech attaching yourself to a place of power." Stella was so furious that she grabbed the girl’s hair and started pulling it. She used her long nails to scratch her face, and I saw blood dripping down the girl’s chin. Suddenly, a man walked in and went straight to Stella and the beautiful girl. He grabbed the beautiful girl's arm and started dragging her out of the room. The girl tried to struggle with him, but he was obviously stronger. When he got to where I was standing, he stopped and said, "Maya, you have grown. You are no more a scrawny-looking thing. I believe Ryan has seen you, right?" He c****d his head to the side. "Uhmm... I don’t think I know who Ryan is, sir..." He laughed so loudly that my eardrums almost burst. What is it with these people and loud noises? "I am definitely not a ‘sir.’ I am just plain Dylan, and I am sure you’ve met him. He is the stoic guy you saw at dinner." The girl suddenly found a way to slip out of his grasp and was fast on her heels. He sighed, shook his head, and walked after her. Stella was still fuming, and I quickly walked away to my room before she turned her wrath toward me. I have never been one for altercation. I got to my room and took my phone to call my dad. The line rang for a while before he picked up. "Hey... Dad," I heard rustling over the phone. "Are you busy? Where are you?" The line was cracking. "Maya, I will call you back. I am in the middle of something important." The line went dead. I pulled off my clothes and went to the bathroom to take a bath. After that, I did my night routine, pulled on my pajamas, and climbed into bed. My mind drew me back to the dining room when I saw him and how intense I had felt. Why did I feel that way for him? And how did Stella’s nails get so long that they scratched that girl’s face? Why did that Dylan guy not rush to grab the first aid kit but drag her out instead? Why has my dad been acting sketchy ever since we got here? I had so many questions, and I mulled over them till I fell asleep.
