Prologue
"Mom, I need you to understand. we need to leave. we have Hunters after us, after Breyanna." Mary Catherine pleaded with her mother. "Why on earth would anyone want to harm a helpless baby?" Megan cannot wrap her head around it. "She has a lycan spirit in her blood as well as the protection of the druids. She should have nothing to fear!" "She has something to fear from the werewolves and the druids, too." Seamus Gilhooley comes in from the cold to collect his family. "I don't know where the threat is, but I have felt it in the council chamber. Someone wants us, the three of us, dead." "You're talking of the fool prophecy," Sean Michael Wrynn comes from behind his bride and wraps his arms around her waist. Megan visibly relaxes. "The prophecy is about a human finding a werewolf mate. Aubrey is lycan, like her grandmother. She has already shifted! She will be very powerful." "We don't know that, Dad. Someone may be jumping the gun, but that gun is pointed at myself and my family. I will not stand as a target." Mary Catherine is determined, facing her parents in defense of her family. All right, love. I will come out of retirement for a while. when this foolishness is over, I will return to retirement. Megan straightened her spine. she would do anything for her only pup, even though she married someone entirely unsuitable. "Good." Seamus was jingling the car keys, ready to leave. "I have Jabal Mao taking my spot as councillor. You know him. I have him as my second in command, because I would not be as good a councillor without him." "I like Mao. I will support him. The fay should follow my lead. Wurtz may be a problem." Megan nodded her head. "Fine. Go. May the goddess go with you." With that, she kissed her daughter's face and that of the babe in her arms. Sean did the same. As they watch the small family walk down the driveway, Sean speaks, "We will see them again, Agra. Keep the Faith in your heart." ...... [Three Days Later] Megan Starr Wrynn waited as the rest of the Council gathered. She and Jabal Kalam Mao were to be sworn in as new Council members. At retirement, she rescinded a full century of seniority. Sometimes it doesn't pay to be so long-lived. Her hair was pulled back and her council robes were so familiarly draped. Her mate, Sean Michael Wrynn was by her side, squeezing her hand before releasing it. Her friend and second in command, Emily McGee, was on her other side. She saw the werewolf Councillor, Rick Wurtz, standing with his mate, Kate, on one side and his second command, Gus Meyer, on the other. Each of the other councillors were also standing with mates and their seconds. She caught the eye of the ancient vampire, Victoria Williamson, and they exchanged smiles. The witch councillor, Elsie Clarkson sneered at Megan and at Jabal. "Where is your daughter, Wolfie? Shouldn't she be here? What about her manslut of a worthless druid? There's nothing worse than praying to Gods who won't listen." The second in command, Rhonda White, rolled her eyes in disgust. Elsie's mate, Matthew, laughed. "Obviously, they both have had some personal matters to attend to. That is why we are gathered today so early." Megan would not back down from such belligerence. Neither would she fall for the bait. "Alright, let's come to order quickly, so we can continue with other issues that need addressing." Victoria calls the meeting to order. She had taken the Lead Council after Megan retired from office. She became the longest standing non-fay council member when Megan left. "We welcome Megan Colleen Star Wrynn back to the Council, should the Living Wood approve." At this, Megan brings forth a family heirloom iron dagger to prick her finger and drop blood onto the Living Wood altar. The Wood glowed and the light surrounded her. "I object!" Elsie stood. "Why should we welcome her back?! She has been away for three years! She must at least lose seniority!" "I did not say that she would retain seniority. I said that we welcome her back as a councillor. Her role will be as a representative of her daughter." Victoria nodded to Megan to make sure she understood. Megan nodded back, clear in her duties. "We introduce Jabal Kalam Mao as a new Councillor for Natural Magic as a High Priest of Egypt. Victoria extends her hand to Jabal, who bows deeply. "Formerly a second in command, Jabal will take on the duties previously held by Councillor Seamus Gilhooley, Druid. Who do you have as your second in command?" "Thank you, Lead Council Williamson. Jabal bows again as his deep voice fills the chamber with warmth. My second is from an old Spanish family, Eduardo Juan Garcia. He is a known White Santero." Eduardo bows to the Council as well. "We will now see if you, and your second, are accepted by the Living Wood," Victoria directed. Jabal pulled a curved golden dagger from his belt and calmly pricked his finger for the Living Wood. Eduardo did the same with another ancient steel dagger. The Wood glowed and the glow surrounded Jabal. However, when it was Eduardo's turn, the glow encompassed his arm and traveled no further. "It would seem that you will need to find another second within three months, Jabal. This may not be the proper fit for you." Victoria saw Elsie out of the corner of her eye, concentrating on the process, wiggling her fingers and mouthing some words. "What do you think, Councillor Clarkson?" With that, the glow continued up the arm and covered Eduardo, if faintly, before disappearing. "Ah. Perhaps the Living Wood has much to teach us, does it not, Councillor Woodvine?" "It would seem so, Councillor Williamson," replied the fay, fully aware of the tension of the room and the energy magic that had been performed.
