CHRIS BARELY HAD time to change clothes when he got home from work on Friday when Ted came home from the Clarks, who’d been serving as babysitters during the Christmas break.
“Can we go get my surprise now, Papa?” he said.
“You bet we can, just as soon as I get my shoes on.”
That taken care of, he and Ted went downstairs and climbed into Mabel. Chris made his way to Roosevelt Boulevard, and within minutes they were on the expressway and headed north on I-95.
“How far is it to the surprise?” Ted said.
“Quite a way. It’s way out on the north side of town.” Eventually, Chris left I-95 and followed a secondary highway; then the highway became a street, the street became a lane, and he finally pulled up in front of an ordinary looking house with a high chain-l
