CHRIS NOTICED THAT the door to Charley and Joe’s room was open the next morning and was surprised when he found Charley at the kitchen table.
“You’re up early,” Chris said. “Which is unusual, considering how late you must have come in last night.”
“Did I wake you?” Charley said. “If I did, I’m sorry.”
“Not at all, and I didn’t say ‘came in’, I said, ‘must have come in’. You worked a dinner shift, and there’s no doubt in my mind that you stopped by the hospital afterward. Ergo, you must have come in late.”
“Yeah, I did. Joe said you and Ted stopped by to see him yesterday.”
“So we did.”
“He really appreciated it.”
“Charley, having been there myself, I understand full well how lonely you can get in a hospital bed.”
“Yeah. Anyhow, I’m going to go see Joe
