“No, and certainly not with another on the way. They’ll be better off here, and Diana has already said she’ll sponsor the two children for their first year here. If Mary still can’t afford to keep them herself, we’ll have to see if she’ll be willing to do so again at that time.”
Lydia’s heart grew heavy with the thought of this family being torn apart because of lack of money, but at least the children would be well cared for at the school. “It is good of Diana, but still…”
“Yes.” The matron stepped forward. “Now, now, Mary, you’re going to make yourself sick if you continue carrying on like this. You know where the children will be, and you can come visit them any time, you know that,” she said, gently pulling the children from Mary’s grasp.
