CHAPTER 1: THE HIGH-STAKES BREACH
The rainy streets of South Carolina glistened under the neon glow of streetlights, but deep inside the penthouse suite of the Grand Palmetto Hotel, the atmosphere was stone cold. Rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, blurring the coastline into a dark, stormy abyss.
Seraphina Vance sat at a polished black glass desk in the corner of the darkened room, her face illuminated only by the cool blue light of three ultra-thin laptops. Her long, dark hair was pulled back into a tight, practical ponytail, exposing her sharp cheekbones and dark, intense eyes. Her fingers moved across the mechanical keyboard with practiced, rhythmic speed, leaving no room for error.
For three years, Sera had lived as a ghost. To the public, she was the quiet, invisible daughter of Dominic Vance, the head of Vance Logistics. But behind the scenes, she was the shadow hacker who had systematically dismantled her father’s illegal offshore networks piece by piece.
Dominic believed he owned her. He believed she was nothing more than leverage, a bargaining chip to be sold off in the syndicate world. To ensure she never stepped out of line, her father had assigned her a personal shadow—a ruthless guardian who controlled her every move.
Killian Vane.
On paper, Killian was her personal bodyguard, hired to protect the syndicate boss's daughter at all costs. In reality, he was a lethal predator, an elite commander of Vane Tactical Security who held her captive in a gilded cage under the guise of protection.
Sera pressed a final key, watching a green progress bar reach ninety-nine percent.
"Just five more seconds," she whispered under her breath, her pulse steady despite the immense pressure. "Just five seconds, Gia..."
Thousands of miles away in a high-security private medical facility, her younger sister Gia was waiting. Gia’s heart was failing, and Dominic had locked away the financial clearance required for the life-saving valve operation, using it to keep Sera under his thumb. Tonight, Sera was stealing the ledger that held the private bank keys to her father's empire. Once she had the keys, Gia’s surgery would be paid for, and both of them would disappear forever.
Suddenly, a loud red warning box flashed across Sera’s central screen.
WARNING: EXTERNAL FIREWALL BREACH DETECTED. ENCRYPTED COUNTER-TRACE INITIATED.
Sera’s eyes narrowed. This wasn't her father’s security team. Dominic’s IT enforcers were blunt and slow. This counter-trace was silent, swift, and terrifyingly precise. It moved through her proxies like a blade through silk, cutting through her secondary servers in seconds.
"Who are you?" Sera muttered, her fingers flying into a frantic defense routine.
On the third monitor, a dark terminal window opened automatically, overriding her custom command prompt. Text began to generate on the screen in cold, blood-red font:
You are in my servers, little thief.
Sera froze. A chill ran down her spine as the realization hit her. She hadn't just breached her father's private network; she had accidentally crossed into the master encrypted hub that Killian ran parallel to his guard duties.
The Reaper had caught her.
In the underworld, Killian Vane’s name was spoken in hushed, terrified whispers. If any other hacker broke his code, he sent executioners. But for Sera, her own bodyguard knowing her secret meant her game of hide-and-seek was officially over.
Sera slammed her laptop shut, severing the physical connection. She grabbed her leather duffel bag from the bed, zipping it shut with a harsh tug. She pulled on a dark trench coat, slipping her secondary encrypted phone into her pocket. She had to move now. She needed to reach the safe house near the docks, transfer the funds for Gia’s surgery, and get out of the state before Killian closed the net on her.
Sera walked swiftly toward the suite's private exit door, her boots silent against the thick carpet.
Before her hand could touch the brass handle, the heavy solid-wood door exploded inward with a deafening crash.
Sera instinctively threw herself sideways, rolling across the floor and taking cover behind the heavy marble kitchen island. Glass shattered, and the faint smell of gunpowder filled the air.
Through the dust and rain-slicked darkness of the entryway, four tall men in full black tactical gear moved into the room with absolute, terrifying coordination. They carried silenced submachine guns, their movements fluid and lethal.
"Clear the left perimeter," a deep, stern voice barked from the hallway.
Viktor, Killian’s chief of tactical operations, stepped into the suite. His broad frame filled the doorway, his icy grey eyes scanning the ruined living space.
"Find the girl," Viktor ordered coldly to his men. "Mr. Vane wants his charge intact."
Behind the marble island, Sera held her breath, her fingers wrapping tightly around the small stun device tucked in her coat pocket. She waited until the nearest operative stepped past the kitchen counter. With lightning speed, Sera lunged forward, slamming the stun device directly into the operative’s neck. High-voltage electricity surged through his body, dropping him to the floor with a heavy thud.
Sera grabbed the fallen guard's tactical belt, throwing a smoke canister onto the floor. Thick, white smoke erupted instantaneously, blinding the room.
Sera sprinted toward the private balcony exit, pushing through the blinding cloud. She burst out onto the high-altitude stone terrace, the freezing rain drenching her skin instantly. She looked over the edge—a thirty-story drop to the roaring ocean below. There was no escape route.
"Impressive instinct," a deep, low baritone growled behind her.
The sheer power vibrating in that voice made Sera’s breath lock in her throat.
She turned slowly, stepping back against the wet stone balustrade.
Standing at the edge of the terrace, completely unfazed by the storm, was Killian Vane.
He was massive. Broad-shouldered, towering over six feet four inches, clad in a tailored black suit beneath a heavy dark coat. His dark hair was soaked from the rain, clinging to his sharp forehead. But it was his eyes that made Sera’s blood run cold—obsidian dark, piercing, and filled with an absolute, terrifying possessiveness.
Killian stepped forward, his heavy boots slow and deliberate against the stone. He didn't carry a weapon. As her assigned protector, he didn't need one to dominate her space.
"Seraphina Vance," Killian growled softly, his low voice cutting effortlessly through the roar of the wind and rain. "The rogue hacker who thought she could steal under my nose and slip away into the night."
Sera lifted her chin, staring directly into his lethal dark eyes. "I didn't steal from you, Killian. I took what belongs to my family."
A faint, dangerous smirk touched the corner of Killian’s sharp lips. He stopped just two feet away from her, his massive frame blocking out the light, trapping her completely between his shadow and the stormy abyss behind her.
"Your father pays me to guard what is his, little brat," Killian whispered, reaching out with one broad, calloused hand. His thick fingers caught her chin, tilting her face up to his with unyielding force. "Including you."
Sera felt the heat of his touch burn through the freezing rain, a sharp, electric shock coiling low in her stomach.
"I belong to no one," Sera growled back softly, trying to pull away from his grip.
Killian’s grip tightened just enough to keep her locked in place, his thumb tracing the contour of her trembling bottom lip. His dark eyes burned into hers with an unshakeable, terrifying promise.
"You breached my protocol, Seraphina," Killian growled, his face lowering until his lips were inches from hers. "You thought I was guarding you from the world? I'm guarding you for myself. You are mine."
