Knock, knock.
Asher didn’t turn his head. Still leaning against the window. He opened his mouth.
“Come.” His brief respond sounded.
The door opened to reveal a worried Roan. And that didn’t suit him.
“Hi man, wanna talk?” Roan suggests wary.
“Yes.” Asher replied as well as turning around. He moved to his seat. He Pull it and sat down.
Roan crossed the room and took a seat. He pulled it and postured it so he can face Asher across the desk. Unlike usual when he sits on his opposite right side.
“What did happen yesterday?” Roan wondered; his voice matched his serious features.
Asher took a deep breath. Putting his elbows on his desk. He rested his chin on his entwined hands.
“I was rejected…. Again.” He began. His voice showing no emotions.
Normally, Roan would make a joke ‘dude! You already told me. I want the details!’ but right now he didn’t open his mouth and let his friend take his time.
“She said that I am cursed and that whoever mated to me will be too.” Asher continued. His voice mixed with sadness and disappoint.
“What kind of s**t is that!” yelled Roan. slamming his hand on the desk.
If it was any one else, he would have been punished on his actions. But between alpha and his beta especially if they were friends. The alpha would over look that.
“But at least that creative.” Asher smirked.
“Creative?” Roan calmed down and sat back in his seat.
“Yes, they can’t keep spreading rumors about me being murder, manipulator and careless. they need update.” Asher explained coldly. His jaw tightened.
Roan eyes widen. His mouth fell opened.
Roan paused for a moment and said “are you sure they are the same?”
Asher only nodded.
“What will they gain from this?” Roan was confused.
Asher looked at him coldly and said “put everything together, what do you see?”
“Someone definitely trying to destroy you,” Roan answered as he looked serious. “But they can’t attack our back, so they are using a cowered way.” Roan finally looked up at his friend who looked emotionless.
“But why?” asked Roan. “that’s doesn’t make sense!”. “Attacking the pack is much easier than all that crap. Why are they doing this?” Roan was annoyed. Something wasn’t right. He knew it.
“Are we sure that is what they want?” Asher spoke while leaning back in his seat.
“What do you mean?” Roan whispered. a line appeared on his forehead.
“Just as you said, attacking the pack is much easier. So why they attack me?” Asher
“no.” Roan gazed at Asher. “If they want to attack you, they will attack the pack. Faking an attack would be much easier and quickly. They can assassinate you as well. There are a lot of opinions if they want to harm you. Still, they chose that weird way.” Roan ringing voice filled the room.
Both of them didn’t speak for a few seconds.
“They didn’t attack you! They attacked your reputation!” Roan yelled at the end. He fisted his hands as well as gritting his teethes.
Asher smiled at his friend. “Finally, you started to understand,” he faked a disappointed gesture. “I was thinking of changing you as my beta.” He chuckled.
Roan didn’t seem to laugh. “Man, how I am supposed to think of this!” he yelled, more to himself. “that’s so weird, who would do something like this.” He said confused.
“Look who is talking!” Asher huffed.
Roan stood up.
“First. That’s an art. Every art has different mothed and tactics. Everyone chooses what is suitable for them. What make them comfortable. What make them happy.” Roan’s eyes sparked. He moved his hands as he spoke.
“And it requires talent. Not everyone is qualified.” A proud smile appeared on his face.
“Torturing is fun! If you know how to do it right!” Roan still smiling.
Asher dead palm.
He regretted mention that topic.
“And what could they benefit of it. Why they would attack your reputation and not you directly?” he paused releasing that he may know why.
“Oh my god! Your mates!” he yelled. Finally, it all make sense right now.
“Yes, my mates.” Responded Asher who now turned his head to look at the window. A sad smile decorated his features.
“But why?” Roan sat down again. “What is special about your mate,”,
“Mates.” Asher corrected him.
“Mates.” Roan murmured. “Is that the reason why you have all these chances?”
Asher looked directly at his friend. He didn’t know what to say.
A second chance was rare in the weres world, but still exist, but what was weird that a person has a third chance. And what it makes it even more weird is to have more than three.
As Asher knew, he didn’t hear about anyone got a fourth chance. Yet, here he is!
“You know that a second chance is rare. I didn’t just have one but six.” After a few seconds, Asher replied his voice croaky.
Roan’s eyes fell on his friend. They filled with sadness. for both his friend’s voice and statement. He was right it was rare. They couldn’t think about it clearly because of all the drama that was happing. But now they can sit down and think.
After releasing that, it was all clear now. “They didn’t want to attack the pack. They wanted your mate to leave you and when you got another, they just continued.” Roan stated in a steady voice.
“It is a wicked way to harm someone like that.” Roan grimaced.
“I don’t think that the only cause.” Asher tells. Tiring showing in his voice.
“The best way to destroy a pack without any effort is to break down their alpha. If an alpha lost their mate or didn’t get one, it will destroy them slowly.” Asher chuckled darkly.
“It was their bad luck that I kept having another mate after the other. I am sure they hated their idea right now.” He smirked.
“Still, there is something else we need to figure out.” Asher straightened himself.
Roan looked at Asher and tilted his head to the side confused.
“Why… why I keep having more mates? That definitely not normal.” Asher’s finger tapped the desk. Whispering sadly.
He Turned his head again to face the window. Which made Roan more hurt. Seeing his friend like that without able to ease him, ached his heart.
“Maybe the moon goddess loves you.” Roan joked. Hoping to light up the mood.
Asher only smiles sadly at him and spoke. “More of torturing if you asked me.” He paused for a moment and continue, “who wants to see himself getting rejected over and over.” He finished with a sigh.
“If we knew who did spread those rumors and stopped it, I am sure your next mate won’t reject you.” Roan spoke hopefully.
“We WILL find them and stop that bullshit, but that doesn’t include the next mate.” Asher said firmly. His haw clinched.
“What do you mean?” Roan lifted his brow along with panic spread throws him.
“My next mate.” said Asher, who turned his face, so he can’t be seen. “I will reject her-”
“WHY?” Roan yelled at him as he stood up and slammed his hands on the desk. He gritted his teethes.
“that’s for the best-”, he didn’t have the chance to complete what he started, as Roan who left his seat, pinched him in the face.
“What was that for?” questioned Asher, who is now holding his face with his left hand. His eyes are wide.
“You ask why, ha?” mucked Roan. “Every single were wish for a second chance. And here you are planning to reject it.” Roan angry voice became higher.
“I,” Asher changed his gaze from his friend to look down, his voice shaky and low, “I am tired… so tired. I want to rest” still, he didn’t look up.
Roan froze, he didn’t know what to do or what to say. He was so different from him. Being found his mate, accepted each other, loving each other. Everything was perfect.
yet, he knew what his friend felt. Maybe not the same but he knew his pain. He knew that Asher was lucky. And he definitely doesn’t want him to waste that rare gift. But most important he didn’t want his friend to be alone, forever.
He inhaled and took a few moments and said, “we need first to stop these rumors and wait to your new mate to show up. Then we will talk about this. Ok?” Roan suggested, trying to cheer up his friend. “Who knows, maybe there will not be another mate!” he laughed.
Before Asher could respond, they both looked at the door.
Knock, knock.
Then the door opened to reveal a curious Maela. Who was still behind the door, only her face was seen.
“Is everything fine?”, her voice was small and cautious.
“Yes.”, both answered at once.
“There was something we were argue about, but nothing serios. Don’t worry.” Asher stated with a smile which was obvious fake.
Maela knows that her brother didn’t want to talk, and if she tried to make him say anything against his will, will not end well. So, she chose the only option she can take.
“Alright, if you needed anything, call me.” Her mouth’s corners lifted up.
“I will, princess.” Asher smiled as he leant in his seat.
“Hey!” Roan shouted. Waving his hands at both of them. A look of disbelieve on his face.
“I am not invisible. You know!” Roan pouted; he crossed his arms.
Both siblings looked at him unbothered and said at once, “so what?”
“Man! I am the mate here, so why it feels like I am the third wheel.” Roan kept moving around in the office, wailing.
His mate looked at him with disbelieve and then looked at her brother and questioned, “why did you make him your beta?”
“Some time I wonder why too.” Asher sighed.
At the mention of this topic, Roan suddenly looked serious and said, “that because I am fabulous.” His voice filled with pride.
Immediately, both siblings start to laugh.
after calming down, Maela looked at her brother and spoke, “do you need this i***t any longer?”
Asher looked at his friend, seeing the terror on his face, he smiled.
“no.” Asher answered briefly.
“Then I will take him.” Maela informed in her flat voice. Then she looked at her mate.
Asher couldn’t see Maela’s face but he could see the terror on his beta’s face increase.
“See you later, if you survived.” Asher whispered. A wicked smile shows itself on his face.
Maela then drags her mate out the office.
Roan wanted to ask help from his friend. Only to be met with Asher who mouthed to him, ‘that for this morning’.
The last thing that Asher saw before the door close was his beta’s widen eyes and opened mouthed.
Asher sniffed.
“The smell of fear is good.” He chuckled.
