"YOUR FATHER IS DEAD! YOUR MOTHER IS DEAD. I HAVE BURNED YOUR HOME TO THE GROUND! YOU HAVE NO CHOICE, JOIN ME OR DIE!" Alpha Burniston screams at me and two others. I think we are the only ones left alive.
I look over at the body of my father as our home burns down behind him causing ashes to rain from the sky like snow.
Alpha Burniston raises me off of the ground by my throat and throws me into the nearest tree, cracking a few of my ribs.
I yell out in pain but I quickly stand up and walk slowly to the others. Showing my defeat for now. I don't think my body can take much more right now.
As soon as I see a chance for me to escape I'm running. My father always told me that he has friends in the north. He told me if I was ever in trouble and out of options that I should run north and keep running until I find help.
As soon as I see an opportunity that's exactly what I'm going to do. I'm gonna run like hell North and never look back.
"I wonder where they're taking us?" the boy in front of me asks, whispering quietly.
"Nowhere good." I say to him
"Be quiet. If he hears us talking he'll hurt us again." says the girl walking in front of us.
I hadn't realized she was female. She is covered in dirt and blood and looks just like one of us. Maybe that's a good thing. If Alpha Burniston knew she was a girl they might do really bad things to her.
We have been walking in the dark for a really long time but its obvious we are out of my father's territory, and in someone else's now.
Burinstons I imagine. As the moon began to sink lower in the sky we come to a clearing. In the clearing there is an enormous house and many dirty little shacks surrouding it.
"PUT THE NEW RECRUITS IN THE BARN!" Burniston commands. Two very smelly, very large men grab the three of us and half drag us to the barn opening the door and throwing us inside.
They chain lock the door and walk away quickly. Unable to see anything I feel my way along the floor and eventually find a pile of hay against the far wall.
I whisper to the others to come towards my voice so we can at least be near eachother. Eventually we do fall asleep. Even though we are exhausted and need much more than just sleep, it is a big mistake.
"GET UP YOU LAZY PIECES OF s**t. YOU WILL ALL PULL YOUR OWN f*****g WEIGHT AROUND HERE! YOU'RE LUCKY TO EVEN BE ALIVE!" Screams Alpha Burniston kicking me hard.
I open my eyes as I'm being jerked to my feet. I see the others being stood up as well.
"YOU WILL WORK LIKE EVERY ONE ELSE!" Burniston screams in my face and shoves me towards the door.
Angry but not wanting anymore broken ribs I comply.
We are dragged out and shoved into something that looks like a very abused vegetable garden and told to get to work. No instructions just to get to work.
We work the whole day in the sun. When we are told to go back to the barn before sunset, we are given bread and water and locked back inside.
This goes on for a week. On the seventh day none of us have the strength to keep digging and pulling weeds any longer.
We try to explain to Alpha Burniston that we're exhausted that we need time to rest, and he kills the girl. Snaps her neck in front of us. He tells us we can take the day to think about what we really want. He leaves, locking us in the barn with the girls dead body.
I sit staring at her for a long time. Her dead blue eyes staring into nothingness.
I'm not going to die here. Not like that. Like I don't matter at all.
"I'm not going to let them kill me, and that's what's going to happen if we stay here. When it gets dark, and they've all gone to sleep I'm finding a way out of here. Are you with me?" I say sounding more confident than I really am.
The boy whose name I've come to know as Ben, shakes his head yes looking hopeful.
Ben and I sit with our backs against the wall waiting for the sun to go down, we talk for a bit about our families, wishing there had been something we could have done to save them.
Right before the last rays of sun light drop beneath the horizon I begin to look around the barn I examime the walls and find a window that has been covered with a piece of fence board and a dirty sheet.
I yank off the sheet and grab the board and pull. The nails begin to creak loudly. I stop not wanting to be heard from the outside.
"Ben, come and help me. We only need to get one side of the board off to get the window open." I whisper to him.
Ben comes to the window and helps me quietly pry off the left side of the board and push it to the side.
"Once we get the window open and climb out we have to run as fast as we can, as far as we can, or were gonna end up dead. We have to stick together. Deal?" I say to him.
Ben nods his head yes, a frightened look on his face. I nod back and I yank open the window. I look back at the girls dead body for a split second, then I turn and hoist myself up into the window trying to be as quiet as possible. I jump out of the window and land in the grass.
I grab Bens arm and help him climb out. As he lands in the grass we are both slammed full force into the side of the barn.
The side of my head bounces off of the wood siding and I can feel a warm trail of blood trickle down the side of my face. I scramble quickly to my feet grabbing Ben by his shirt and trying to yank him up along with me.
Ben cries out but stands up too. His arm is clearly broken. He grunts and gasps loudly when he sees the bone sticking out.
"Where do you think you little shits are going?" asks one of our jailers, who Ben and I have been calling 'shitbrains'. Out of every rogue here, he has to be the dumbest, and one of the smallest too.
He sneers at Ben half laughing as he sees his broken arm.
Angry, I punch him as hard as I can in the throat, causing him to choke and gasp for air. Now he can't call for back up. I grab Ben and start to pull him along with me.
We start to run as fast as we can around the side of the barn. As we make it to the tree line Alpha Burniston steps out from behind a tree and grabs Ben by the throat. Before I can say a single word it's over.
Burniston snaps Ben's neck to the side and throws him like a ragdoll onto the ground. No Damnit! I won't die like this!
I run past him at lightning speed.
Burniston howls, calling to the others to join in the hunt for me..
I call out to my wolf Kirin. It's been days since we have been strong enough to communicate, but I take a chance. "Kirin, please answer me. Please, we're free and I need you. Please I can't run as fast as you." I say trying to wake him.
"We're free?" Kirin asks me quietly as I jump over a log.
"Yes but not for long if you don't help me!" I yell to him, my heart pounding wildly.
I release control to Kirin and shift. He hits the ground running and tears across the ground kicking up chunks of earth.
"They're behind us Flint and It sounds like there is a lot of them!" He says.
"I know I hear them Kirin, just focus on the ground and do your best. Run North, keep running North and don't stop!" I say to him.
As tired as I am Kirin has to be as well, but he keeps running. For almost three days he pushes on only stopping to drink and go to the bathroom. He only stops and sleeps once.
The landscape changes and Kirin follows a creek, still moving North. As we enter the red wood forest he stops between two thick trees so he can sleep again.
We need to eat, and soon or we won't make it any farther. Kirin lays down to sleep and soon after says "Flint I'm done. I'm sorry but I can't run anymore." He says and shifts, returning control to me.
"You did good buddy. Don't worry I'm pretty sure you lost them a day or so ago. We should be safe for now." I say to him.
I lean up against a tree and close my eyes for what seems like only moments, when I hear loud growling.
My eyes snap open and no more than a foot away, directly in front of me is a huge black wolf, bearing its teeth and growling.
After a moment he shifts and a very big dude is standing before me. "So, you wanna tell me who you are? And why you're on my hunting grounds?" He asks me loudly.
I do my best to tell him my story with out taking to long to get to the important parts. After a few minutes I begin to cry, Im too tired to do much else, when I tell him about my parents. I ask him if he is the one who can help me. I ask him for asylum.
After I finish he stares at me for a minute or so. Then he says, "Sounds like it's been rough. Your father was right to send you our way. My sympathies that He and your family have been taken from you. Right now I think after what you've been through it would be a good idea to get you to the pack hospital. Okay?" He asks me.
I shake my head and stand up. "I'm Flint by the way." I say to him and reach out my hand to shake.
"Alpha Alexander DeCosta. " He says and shakes my hand. I stare at him stunned for a moment. I guess I should have realized it when he asked me why I was on his hunting grounds.
It is a bit of a walk to the pack hospital from where we started out but the Alpha and I exchange only very little small talk on the walk. I am greatful he doesn't feel like interrogating me.
The Alpha gets me quickly checked in and put into a room with a bed. He tells me he'll come by to check on me tomorrow. A couple of nurses come in and proceed to clean my wounds.
The Doctor come in and tells me to lay back so he can give me a couple of shots and set my ribs in place.
I lay back, doing as he asks and moments later I can do nothing but fall fast asleep.
