"VAMPIRES HUNTING IN OUR TERRITORY! MALEKAI! HAS THE REST OF THE FUCKEN GROUNDS BEEN SWEPT?” I scream from my office doorway. Malekai, my beta, comes jogging down the hall. “Yes Alpha, the Omegas said they have been out sweeping the forest since last night.” Malekai says. “GOOD! I can't believe after all this time. Vampires in our forest! A week before such an important blood moon!” I say to Malekai loudly. The Moon Goddess has given our pack many gifts over the years we have been allowed to live here among the Redwoods. Our greatest however, is our life spans. For the last three hundred years, we have been given near immortality. We do age, but very slowly. We live long lives. "I guess we shouldn't have gone out last night Boss." Malekai says. I shake my head at him "None of this is because you took a night off." I say. "You should go talk to Dr. Baldwin. He says the human is lucky to be alive. She took quite a beating. It'll be some time before she can walk again. She has a broken ankle, and a list of other damage, including possible brain trauma. She's has a few minor things too, like a sprained elbow, and dislocated shoulder. Lots of cuts and scratches. Doc said someone meant to cause her pain.” Malekai says. I’ve been raging about this since it happened, especially since the vampire managed to escape. I hadn't given any thought to the human yet. Human’s also hardly ever wander through this part of the forest. More complications. We walk into my office, and I sit at my desk. I say, “I haven’t had time yet, Malekai. I was trying to finish the ceremony plans, and my mother keeps telling me the Oracle wants to talk about ‘Destiny’. Who’s destiny? The Packs? I know I can't keep putting it off. I'm going down to the hospital, later. Has she been awake?” I ask him. “Not yet. The Doc said it might take a while for her to wake, because of her head trauma.” Malekai says. I frown, and say, “I guess I should go and observe the human for myself, see what the Doc says. First I need to run down to the training grounds and talk to Brick. I want to see how he feels about possibly adding another fighter to their ranks.” Brick is the oldest of our Omega warriors. Malekai raises his eyebrows at me. I knew he’d be interested, it was just something else that happened last night I hadn't had the time to tell him about. “I found a young rogue badly beaten out at the hunting grounds last night. He was pretty scared. He's in pretty rough shape. He hasn't eaten in some time either.” I tell Malekai. “He didn't need any coaxing to tell me where he ran from. Blood Moon Malekai, and I’m pretty sure they meant to kill him. Drake killed the boy’s family. Dragged him to Blood moon territory and kept him captive. The boy swears he never broke bond with his own pack. He says his father was Esharum Dunham.” Malekai stares at me. His face a mixture of pity and anger. “He said his father always told him he could find help in the North. So he’s been running north, alone, for days. He found the creek and followed it to our hunting grounds. His name is Flint. He’s sixteen. He's asked for asylum.” I tell him. Malekai is silent for a few moments. Blood Moon. We have a treaty with them as we do with most of the packs that we either do business with, or share a border with. That however is where the pleasantries with Blood Moon end. I hate their Alpha, Drake Burniston, though he really shouldn't be an Alpha. He's Brutal, sloppy, and classless. He's ruthless to lesser packs and still practices bride thieving, sometimes raping and disfiguring a packs Luna, so they wouldn’t forget they had been conquered. Malekai says “Drake needs to be taken care of. His entire damn pack is the remnants of others he decimated. The rest are children and women forcibly made part of his pack, because he is clearly incapable of following any sorts of rules. Alex, Esharum Dunham was an Alpha. One of the best, and now his son is an orphan.” Years ago Burniston broke pack law, and went after another packs Luna, with the intent of making her his, to bear his pups. He cared nothing of the woman, he only wanted the centuries old bloodline she was a member of. He murdered her pups, her mother, and eventually, when she would not yield, he killed her too. It caused a war that spilled out, involving packs from all over. Many of those packs are still healing from those losses today. Many have tried in the years since, to bring him down, but he is sneaky, cunning. He's escaped enough times to make putting him down a difficult task. Other Alphas have come to me though. Some recently, speaking more than casually, about a time soon when we'll have to deal with Drake. For now we follow the treaty. “Flint huh? I'll take him down to the training house myself to meet Brick when he’s ready. I’ll get him settled in.” Malekai says. I smile. I think Flint has just gained his first of many big brothers. If Malekai has anything to do with it, Flint won’t feel alone for long. “Sounds like a plan. He’s at the hospital, getting fixed up. He's got a few broken ribs and a couple of really deep cuts. He’s probably ready for a meal too. I'll go over there with you, I just need to talk to Brick first. I know the boy is not an Omega but I thought he might benefit from training with the others for a while.” I say. All packs have Omegas, and to my knowledge they do the cooking, cleaning, the laundry. They are mistreated, and often thought of as lowly and unworthy. Not in our pack. My father taught me a pack is as strong as its weakest wolves. Well my weakest wolves are tougher than most other packs strongest, and we work damn hard for it. I treat all my pack with the same respect. We have thirteen Omegas who live within our pack. Boys ranging in age from seventeen, to twenty years old. A few are orphans like Flint. Brick was my first Omega. He came to our pack ten years ago, a survivor of one of Drake’s massacres. The first thing Brick asked me was to do was teach him to fight. He made me want all of our pack, especially the Omegas to learn to fight the right way, and be strong. Our pack has been steadily expanding the last few years. If you have a good lycan heart, and are willing to pull your own weight, you are welcome here. It really has only made us stronger, strengthening our pack with hearty, tough, unyielding bloodlines. A pack we're proud of. Malekai says. “I should shower. Link me when you leave the training house.” I nod at him as he walks out of my office. I glance briefly at the papers on my desk again, before I too leave the room. I go downstairs and leave the packhouse. I step off the porch and start walking towards the training grounds. I decide to take a quick run first. I need to let off some steam. As angry as I was at the fact that a Vampire had been in our lands, my wolf Adrian, could barely contain himself. As enemies go Adrian believes Vampires are of the highest threat. I agree. I go to a thicker area of the woods and shed my clothing leaving it piled under a tree. I give Adrian control. “Just a quick one okay, and try to steer clear of any Vamps.” I say to Adrian as a joke, but he's having none of it. He growls loudly. “No more vampires.” Adrian says and then bolts. He's running fast, kicking up chunks of earth as he tears into the ground with his massive paws. Although technically Adrian and I are one and the same, we're also in fact two distinct personalities, and on more than one occasion I have been in awe of his strength and power. I've always been impressed with the way he looks too. He's a massive jet black wolf with silver tipped ears and golden eyes. He's magnificent. After a few minutes of tearing through the forest I hear water rushing. I realize Adrian has run all the way to the waterfall. It’s a few miles outside of the training grounds and quite a run. He's made it here in a pretty short amount of time too. He skids to a halt at the water's edge breathing hard. We sit in silence both lost in our own thoughts, though we were thinking about the same thing. “Have you seen the human? Did she survive?” Adrian asks me. I didn’t think that Adrian would be interested in her condition. There are times when Adrian sleeps deeply and I have to catch him up if he has questions. This close to a blood moon eclipse he would usually sleep until the ceremony. ”I haven't been to see her. I'm told she took a bad beating, but the Doc says she'll survive.” I tell him. Adrian growls low. “Was she bitten?” he asks flatly. Now I understand his interest in the humans condition, it's purely to find out if she has been defiled. Adrian wants to know if there is a chance she will turn. “No, Adrian. There were no bite marks. Anywhere. The doctor checked her entire body.” I tell him. That seems to make him feel better. I feel him relax as he walks toward the water to drink. He sits in silence for a few more minutes, before heading back. Adrian tears through the forest again at lightning speed, returning quickly. As he gives me back control he says, “I hate vampires Alexander.” I sigh and say, “I know Adrian. So do I.” I retrieve my clothing and get dressed. I mind link Brick to let him know I’m dropping by in a few minutes. He tells me he and the boys are out training. Today is Sunday, their day off, and they have been on patrol all night. Damn, I do love their dedication. When I get to the training grounds I can see the are working hard. I'm proud. Even on a regular day they wouldn’t be due to train for another hour. They have to be tired. Last night's events have left me in a crappy mood. Watching the boys out here now working to better themselves makes me feel a little better. “Morning guys.” I say loudly. They all stop and greet me. “Morning Alpha.” They say in unison. I nod at Brick. He walks over to me and tells the boys to keep working. “Hey, Brick, I thought you and the boys would have come home and went to bed. You guys earned your day off this week. The extra training is always good, just don't over do it. I came to see if you feel like adding another to your ranks? A young rogue was found last night. He’s sixteen, and a has had a rough few weeks. He lost his entire family. He came looking for help, and has asked for asylum. He’s not an Omega, he's the son of Esharum Dunham. He ran from Blood Moon. It's they that have orphaned him.” I tell him. Brick Growls. It’s a low angry grumble from deep inside him, and for a moment I see his eyes flash silver. He immediately regains control of himself, and apologizes. “Alpha, my apologies.” Brick says bowing his head. I smirk, not offended in the least, in fact I approve of his disdain for Blood Moon. “No apology necessary, I feel the same way. I’d be surprised if you hadn’t been pissed.” I say to him. Brick shakes his head and looks at me. “We've got plenty of room in the house, he can rest and heal up. When he’s ready, the boys and I will see if he has any skills, and where he can get better. Sounds like he could use some friends. We'll do our best Alpha.” He says. I smile at him and then mind link them all at the same time telling them, “You boys need to get some rest. Another hour. Tops. You need to be rested just as much as you need to train.” Again in unison they reply, “Yes Alpha.” I turn back toward the direction of the pack house and sigh. My plan today originally was to get the young rogue settled. Now the problem of the human remains. Though it was sitting in the back of my mind, I haven't had time to give the problem of the human more than a few seconds of thought. Now the situation needs my attention. What am I to do with her? Rogues, Vampires, and Humans in the same night. It's starting to get busy around here, and not in a good way. I mind link Malekai, and tell him I'm on my way to the hospital. As I get nearer the building, I smell something that sets all my senses on alert, and Adrian begins to struggle, grabbing and releasing control. It smells like warm honey and Vanilla mixed with sandalwood. For a second, Im unable to hold Adrain back. He's incredibly intoxicated by the smell, as am I. He growls deeply the sound erupting from me. I shake my head, trying to focus but the smell is just getting stronger as I get closer to the hospital. “ADRIAN YOU HAVE TO STOP! TELL ME WHATS HAPPENING?!” I yell at him. Immediately Adrian gives me back control, and I double over, breathing hard. “Hey man, you wanna tell me what the hell is going on?! What's just happened?!” I ask him. Adrian whimpers loudly, but doesn’t answer me. The smell is almost over powering now, and I'm beginning to lose focus again. “Adrian? Come on man, what's happening?” I ask again still breathing hard. Adrian whimpers again but this time answers me clearly. He says, “MATE”.
