I watch Alpha Alexander pick up the Luna and walk in the direction of the pack house. I stare at them for a moment. "We were lucky this time." I hear Brick say as he walks up behind me.
"I don't think it was luck. I think the Luna did this." I say looking around at all the dead wolves on the ground.
Brick stares at me for a minute trying to comprehend what I am telling him.
"What do you mean?" He asks me, his face a mixture of concern and curiosity.
"Well, that used to be one of the wolves that was attacking the Alpha." I say to him and point to a pile of bloody chunks and fur splattered in the grass.
"She put up her hands and he just sort of exploded." I say to Brick. "I think she did this. I think she stopped them all."
Brick stares at me for a few seconds. "Whatever she did to stop them, I'm greatful. We needed the back up." He says rolling one of the dead wolves over and examining him. "Now comes the hard part. We need to check every one of these bodies and find Burniston." Brick says.
"That might take a while." I say to Brick taking a deep breath and exhaling slowly as I look around.
"Your probably right. We should get to work." Brick says rolling over another dead wolf.
I nod at him and without saying anything else I get to work. I begin searching each wolf carefully.
After an hour of searching I still haven't come across Drake Burnistons body. I am beginning to question if he is even here among the dead.
I move in between two large trees and I roll over a huge dead wolf hoping I found Burniston. Instead It is much worse.
Underneath this wolf is Gamma Jackson. In his wolf form I may not have recognized him. But as a man it was obviously him. "BRICK! I NEED HELP!" I scream as loud as I can.
Gamma Jackson body is broken in many places, and he has deep bleeding gashes across his chest. He reaches a hand up and I immediately take it. Jackson grips my hand tightly. "Did we get him? Did we get Burniston? Is he dead?" He asks choking on a mouthful of blood.
Brick comes running over to me and skids to a halt when he sees Gamma Jackson.
"Oh f**k! SETH! DECKER! WE NEED YOU NOW!!" Brick screams to the others for help. Brick, Seth, DECKER and I lift Gamma Jackson up as carefully as we can and start the long walk to the hospital.
As we reach the front area a few yards before the hospital doors everyone who had been inside the shelter is beginning to flood out and Brick screams loudly.
"EVERYONE GET OUT OF THE WAY, WE HAVE FUCKEN EMERGENCY! MOVE!"
As we kick the doors open and get inside Brick chooses the first room to put Jackson in.
Brick goes out into the hall and begins to scream loudly "DOCTOR BALDWIN! DOC WE NEED HELP!" The doctor comes running quickly from down the hall with two nurses behind him.
When he enters the room he immediately jumps into action. "I'm sorry boys but I need you guys to empty the room." He says.
Brick, Seth and Decker go walking out into the hall, and as I turn to follow them Gamma Jackson grabs my arm and asks me again if we got Burniston.
"We haven't finished checking all the bodies yet, but no I think he got away. Again." I say to him.
"Well get him next time." Jackson says a bloody half smile on his face.
"Flint I'm sorry but I'm gonna need you to wait outside as well." Dr Baldwin says sternly.
"Go easy on the Doc." I say to him trying to ease the tension, even though I am scared as hell.
"Never." Gamma Jackson says as I walk out into the hall with the others. One of the nurses shut the the door and we all just sort of state at eachother for a moment, each of us covered on some part of us in Gamma Jackson's blood.
"He will be okay." Brick says, looking more like he said it to convince himself then tell us.
"What did he say to you?" Brick asks me quietly.
"He asked me if we got Burniston?" I say to him. "I told him that we hadn't finished checking the bodies." I choose not to tell Brick everything I said keeping part of it just between Gamma Jackson and I.
We decide to stay for a while and wait for an update on Jackson's condition. Brick paces up and down the hall staring at the floor. Eventually he and the others decide to head back to finish dealing with the dead wolves.
"I'm gonna stay a while longer guys." I tell them as they head to the doors.
"Well see you at the house later." Brick says. They all give me a quick wave and leave. I sit down in one of the chairs opposite the hospital room Gamma Jackson is in and I wait. I sit and wait for hours. Finally the door opens and Dr. Baldwin comes out into to the hall.
He has blood all over him. His face looks sad.
I stand up and look at him. "How is he Doc?" I ask him
"I wish I had better news. He has so many broken bones. He lost a lot of blood too, and his body doesn't seem to want to heal itself. The truth is Flint, I'm not sure he will make it through the night." Dr. Baldwin says sadly.
"I wonder if you don't mind me asking, have you and Gamma Jackson known each other very long?" Dr. Baldwin asks.
"No. In fact I just met him this morning. Why?" I ask him
"He talked quite a bit about you until he lost consciousness. He thinks very highly of you. He spoke a bit about your father as well. I thought perhaps you knew each other." The Doctor says.
"I promise to let you know if there are any changes to his condition Flint. You should go back to the training house and get something to eat. You've been here for hours." Dr. Baldwin says.
"It's okay I really don't mind waiting." I tell him.
"No offense Flint but you being here will not change anything. I will let you know the minute I know anything." The doctor says.
"Okay Doc. Thanks." I say to him and sigh. I would have stayed but the Doc seemed pretty determined on kicking me out. I turn and walk out the front doors into the coolness of the evening. I walk back to the training house slowly enjoying the quiet.
I really hope Gamma Jackson will be okay. I bet his mate is just going crazy right now. I remember once when I was younger my dad got hurt pretty bad. He was in the pack hospital for a couple days, and my mom could barely stand it.
She stayed at the hospital the whole time. She cried so much and spent the rest of her time nervously pacing back and forth in the hall. I thought she was going to lose her mind. It must be hard when you love someone that much and you think you might lose them.
I finally make it back to the training house and Brick is sitting outside on the porch. "Hey, you finally made it back. What's the word on Gamma Jackson? I didn't want to bother Dr. Baldwin if he was still working on him." He asks me.
"The Doc. said that he doesn't know if he'll live through the night." I say to Brick quietly. "He worked on him for hours. His body isn't healing itself yet because he lost so much blood." I tell him.
Again like with Gamma Jackson, I choose to keep the rest of my conversation just between Dr. Baldwin and I.
"He sent me home and said he would tell us as soon as his condition changes." I tell Brick.
He nods his head. "Mrs. Leoni brought us some food. We left you a big plate in the kitchen. She always makes sure to bring us something when we miss meals." Brick says to me.
I sit down next to him. "Thanks. I feel like crap about what happened to Gamma Jackson." I say to him.
"We all do. Jackson is one of the strongest of us. It's how he got to be Gamma. I keep wondering how many of those filthy f*****g rogues it took to bring him down." Brick says bitterly.
"What do you mean it's how he became Gamma?" I ask Brick curiously.
"Jacksons dad wasn't the previous Gamma. Jackson wasn't born a Gamma either. He is the son of one of our best warriors. When the packs Gamma died, there was no one to replace him. Alpha Alexander chose Jackson be the next Gamma." Brick says.
"Wow. I had no Idea. Alpha Alexander is different than most Alphas isn't he?" I ask, genuinely surprised at what Brick just told me.
"Yes. It's also one of the reasons why any one of us will die to protect this pack. Alpha Alexander gives everyone of us the chance to be better than we are, and to have things we normally couldn't. I mean look at me and the guys. Most of us were born Omegas. In any other pack that would mean we are basically slaves. Here, we are warriors, with the same rights as any pack member. Here we are a family. That includes you now too." Brick says proudly.
Brick and I sit together in silence for a while listening to the sounds of the forest. Eventually I tell Brick I'll talk to him later and head inside. I go into the kitchen and eat the some of best lasagne I've ever had, Mrs. Leoni is an amazing cook. I go upstairs and sit down on the edge of my bed and lay back for a minute intending to get into the shower and wash Gamma Jackson's blood off of me. Instead I fall fast asleep.
