I look at Angie for a moment as I put up both my hands and yell, “OSTIUM AD ALPHA.” I'm sucked off the grass from right next to Angie and dropped roughly onto the ground about three feet from Malekai.
There are two big wolves on top of him. Both of them snapping and snarling trying to get their teeth into his throat, as he fights back. I reach a hand up frantically, wishing their necks were broken. This time before I say anything the larger of the two wolves head snaps to the side, bones crunching loudly, and he rolls off of Malekai.
This is Amelia's power, she was the only one of my sisters that didn't have to say her spells out loud. Surprised, but unphased Malekai stands, grabbing the other wolf by the throat. He easily snaps his neck, tossing his dead body on the ground.
“Luna you should not be here.” he yells to me, his eyes wild. He pulls me to my feet. “Is Angie safe?” He asks quickly.
“Yes Malekai, I just left her, she's fine, I promise. Where is Alexander?” I yell. He points behind me. When I turn around my heart drops. There are three huge wolves on top of him. One of them already has his teeth sunk into Alexander's shoulder, and If I don't do something right now I'm going to watch my mate die.
Malekai quickly shifts into his wolf and races towards Alexander. I'm afraid for them, I don't know if they've ever been in a fight like this before.
I sprint across the grass weaving through fighting wolves, and watch Malekai crash into the wolves on top of Alexander like a bowling ball. By the time they all scrambled to their feet, I'm close enough to do some damage.
I raise both my hands and use my own magick. "DISPLODO!" I scream. Just like before with Angie, two of the wolves explode and a cascade of bloody chunks rain on Alexander and Malekai.
Malekai shifts back, as the last wolf quickly runs for his life. Both of them stand still for a moment staring at me, their eyes wide. Alexander is bleeding from the bite wound he received.
I walk to him, take my hand and press my palm hard against his wound. He growls loudly clearly in pain, so I say something to distract him. “I want a dozen children, Alexander.” Mostly joking. Definately distracted he smiles widely. “Deal.” he says happily. I can't help but smile back.
A moment later I take my hand away and the wound has closed. He runs his hand over it. “Amazing” he says impressed. Alexander winks at me and he and Malekai turn and run, tearing across the grass. I mind link Angie to make sure she's ok.
“Hey Ang, is everything okay?” I ask her, hoping I hadn't lied to Malekai.
“Just perfect bestie, Mrs. Leoni and I have been taking turns poking this broken legged piece of s**t. He's got quite a mouth on him.” She actually sounds like she's having fun.
I shake my head. “Has there been any more trouble up at the pack house?” I ask her quickly.
“We're not at the packhouse bestie. Mrs. Leoni helped me drag the dirty rogue down to the hospital, so everyone here could enjoy his suffering too. I mean, you broke his legs so he couldn't t hurt me or get away. I made sure everybody knows that." She says sounding proud.
I smile to myself, and tell her, “Okay bestie you're a little bit twisted. Have fun, I guess. I'll check back with you in while.”
I mind link Alexander to find out where he is. “I don't think you should come here! There are too many wolves.” He tells me. Im not sitting the rest of this fight out. Not now.
I’m supposed to help protect the pack. It’s my job now too. “ALEXANDER! TELL ME WHERE YOU ARE!” I scream, not intending to sound so forceful. “Alright!.” Alexander shouts, clearly in the middle of a struggle. “Can you use your magic to find me? I don't think I can explain to you where we are. Please, you have to be careful!” He says concern in his voice.
I raise both my hands. Dear Goddess let me get this right. I scream, “OSTIUM AD ALPHA. Again the sensation of being sucked out of the air and then pushed back out. This time however I am dropped right in the centre of the fight. I hit the ground hard and have to quickly roll out of the way before I am kicked in the face.
I can see my mate struggling with a huge grey wolf. There are men and wolves all over the place. “ALEXANDER! I scream at him, jumping to my feet.
As he turns to face me, his foot on the throat of an aggressor, a big white wolf comes up from behind him, opens up his mouth and tries to clamp his jaw shut around Alexander's neck.
I step forward and raise my hand, quickly whispering a spell. The white wolf's head bursts like a water balloon covering everybody nearby with red and white chunks.
“I don't know enough of the pack to tell anyone apart!” I yell to him. Then I get an Idea. ”Alexander! I need you to tell the entire pack to change back into men! All of our fighters! We don't have a lot of time! Tell me when they're ready! Tell them anyone who's not a man will be killed!" I scream to him.
I'm going to try and stop this, but I'm using my own magic, and sometimes, almost every time, that ends badly. “WERE READY!” Alexander yells over the noise.
I raise my hands and scream “DELERET OMNUS LUPI.” A large brown wolf had begun to charge me. As I complete the spell, His dead body drops, and skids across the grass slamming into me. I'm thrown to the ground hard.
I can hear Alexander screaming my name, as he runs to me. Damn that hurt. I lay still for a moment gasping for air. I try to get up but the dead wolf is laying across half of my body and he's too heavy for me to push off.
I shout a spell, blasting a hole in the side of this wolf trying to get myself free. Alexander had stopped standing just on the other side. Blood and fur splatter across the front of his jeans.
He looks down. “Gross.” he says, pulling the rest of the wolf's carcass off me. Alexander reaches down and pulls me to my feet. A strange expression on his face.
I look around, and gasp. I didn’t realize how many intruders had come onto the pack grounds. There are dead wolves everywhere.
“Oh no. What have I done? He said fourty. Forty Alexander. There are so many more dead wolves here than that. They're everywhere. I did this. I don’t want to be good at killing Alexander. Goddess I feel sick to my stomach." I say feeling horrible.
Malekai, having heard what I just said, comes jogging over, to us sporting a fresh cut on his face. For some reason he looks pleased. There is a teenage boy with him I hadn’t met yet.
''Seraphine, Angie just told me what you did. They would have hurt her, and then killed her. You saved my mate and my pup. There are two hundred and thirty five members of this pack. Thirty six of them are children Seraphine. They would have killed our pups. All of them. There were not enough fighters ready to defend against this many rogue wolves. If you hadn’t stopped them we would have died. All of us. I understand how you feel, but I'm not sorry my mate is still alive. Thank you Luna.” Malekai says to me sincerely.
I nod at him. I know Malekai is right, but I still feel horrible. "Do you want me to heal that?” I ask, pointing to his head.
“Nah, maybe later, I gotta go show my woman my battle wounds.” He says happily. I shake my head, laughing as he walks away.
Alexander pulls me into a hug, holding me to his chest. I can hear his heart beating faster than normal.
“Alexander, are you okay?” I ask him puzzled.
“No- and yes. I'm so proud of what you did for everyone, but I- I was afraid for you. The Alpha who came here, and brought these wolves, he's is the worst of us. He has done horrible things to the Lunas of other packs my love. It’s what he's known for. He's a murderer, and I'll be damned if I let him lay a finger on you.” Alexander says.
The expression on his face is new to me. I haven’t seen him worried. The teenage boy who had come over to us with Malekai spoke.
“He killed my mother. She wouldn’t submit, when he was done hurting her, he killed her, and the rest of my family. My father last. He wanted my father to watch my mother be hurt and then killed her in front of him.” He says sadly.
Alexander takes a couple of steps forward and extends his hand to him saying, “Flint, I saw you watching Malekai’s back out here. I appreciate you joining the fight. Flint, this is Seraphine my mate.” Alexander smiles at me proudly, and continues, “Seraphine, this is Flint, I've invited him to join our pack.”
Flint smiles and reaches out to shake my hand. “You're the Luna. Its cool to meet you. I heard people in the hospital talking about you. The guys at the packhouse have been talking too. People are curious. I can't wait to tell them what you did here.” He says to me.
I smile and nod at him. I say, “I haven’t had the chance to meet everyone yet. This is a busy pack, I'm just glad I could help today.” Flint smiles and shakes his head in agreement.
I look at Alexander. His face is serious again, and I know he's upset. I wasn’t thinking, I was scared for him. I turn to him.
“Alexander. I’m sorry. I was scared for you. I was thinking of what my sisters said. Protect the pack. How can I be their Luna, if I can't stand by them in a fight? But, I understand that’s how you felt too. I promise I will be more careful. You know how I am when Im afraid.” I say to him.
Alexander nods and says. ‘Yes I really do my love.”
I sigh, and ask, “Can we please go home now? I really need a shower, I'm covered in chunks.” Alexander chuckles, and nods at me.
We say goodbye to Flint, and Alexander scoops me up walking back to the pack house. Since I don't know the grounds yet, I gratefully let him carry me. It's late in the day now and the sun is starting to set.
We get to the house and Alexander opens up the front door and carries me through like a newly wed couple.
“Hey, that's what married people do,” I say jokingly. “Are you asking me to marry you?” I say giggling.
Alexander's eyes glaze over for a minute, and when he’s back he looks at me seriously and says “Maybe. Would that be so bad?” I feel like he's being serious.
“Nothing is bad as long as I'm with you.” I tell him. He smiles at me and kisses me softly.
A few feet behind Alexander a lovely looking older woman comes walking into the room. She’s tall with slightly graying brown hair. She has lovely blue eyes, and a soft, kind face. He turns and smiles at her.
“Colleen DeCosta, meet Seraphine my mate. Seraphine meet my mother.“ Alexander says proudly. I gasp quietly, this is not exactly the way I wanted to meet her.
She smiles. “It’s very nice to meet you, my child.” She says putting her hand on my filthy cheek. “I'm most grateful for what you did today, defending our home.”
Colleen hands Alexander a small blue box and asks me, “Seraphine my dear what is your last name?” Im slightly embarrassed, because I don't actually have one, most of us were left at the church with no names at all.
My face starts getting hot and I look at the floor. I take a deep breath, and say "I don't have one.” sounding sadder than I had intended. Alexander knows why, its something he learned in my head, but standing here, totally filthy, trying to explain to his mother, why I'm nameless, is uncomfortable.
“Would you like one my dear?” she asks me. I look up, curious, intending to ask her what she means, when I see Alexander holding that little blue box open, inside is a ring.
A round rainbow moonstone with a white gold crescent moon encrusted with tiny diamonds. Alexander's mother says “I think I’ll be going now. Welcome to the family my darling,” She winks at me as she leaves the room.
I turn to Alexander and say smiling, “Ask me.” His face lights up. Goddess I love him so much. This beautiful, amazing man gets down on his knee.
“Will you marry me Seraphine? I know it really doesn't matter because we're mates but I’ve seen who you really are. I know how hard you love, and what you will do for your family. You're made for me. I want us to be together in every way. I love you.” He says.
In all the time I had been alive It had never occurred to me that people loved each other like this. I get down on the floor and kiss him. “Yes, Alexander, I will.” I say to him happily.
We stand up and Alexander takes the ring from the box. He slides it onto my finger, kissing it and then me. I smile and say, “Now, will you please take me to my room?”
