Chapter One
Young Ace P.O.V
“Come on boys, calm down. It's time for bed.” My mother scolds us as me and my friends jump on my large, king-sized bed. I’m having a sleepover tonight as it’s my tenth birthday tomorrow. Not paying my mother any attention, we continue to jump and laugh. I am the prince of Lycans. I don't like being told what to do. It's not in my nature to take orders, and she knows this. I am a natural born leader even though my mother struggles to reign in my alpha tendencies even at such a young age I seem to only be able to submit to my father which shows just how strong I will be.
“Right, that’s it. The hybrid will come and get you all if you don’t listen.” This causes all of us to stop dead in our tracks. As the room fell into silence to the point where you could hear a pin drop.
“Mum the hybrid isn’t real it’s just a story” Even though the thought of her being a real living thing scares me to my very core as a cold shiver works its way up my small frame.
I look to my friends who have all now listened to my mother’s orders and have gotten into bed eyes wide, with fear, pft scaredy cats.
“How do you know she isn’t real, Ace?” My mother questions raising a perfectly shaped brow at me.
“Well, no one has ever seen her, so she can’t be real. For someone who is said to be hundreds of years old, someone would have seen her by now.” I say back while folding my arms defyingly over my chest as I lift my chin high to show my confidence in my answering.
“Ah that is because she is said to kill all those who find out who she truly is?” Mother says with a smirk, pulling at her cherry-coloured lips, causing my confidence to waver slightly, but I still stand tall, refusing to show my fear over a horror story. I am the future king. I can't look weak even if I am only ten.
“Whatever” I mutter, not being able to come up with a good enough comeback at this very moment. This causes my mother to bark out a laugh as I huff an annoyed breath, pulling back the cotton blanket and getting into bed next to my friends.
Once I am settled, my mother starts to tell us a story, but I couldn’t shake the hybrid from my mind. The sound of my mother’s soothing voice fades to background noise as my mind races with things I have heard about this mystery hybrid.
It is said she killed her whole family, including the village she lived in. Due to being unable to control the monster inside, yet no one knows what she is or what powers she possesses. All we know is what our elders have written down in books, but we can’t be sure on how much of that is fact or just speculation as no one is said to have seen her and lived. Soon enough, my thoughts begin to slow as I slip into a deep sleep.
I wake up to my two best friends Sam, my future beta, and Lenny, my future gamma jumping on me.
“Happy birthday Ace” they say in unison. Groaning, I push them off me before they break my ribs, causing them to fall to the floor with a loud thud.
“Get off me, you elephants” I shout before jumping out of bed and heading straight to the bathroom.
I quickly shower, then get dressed as excitement for my birthday party doubles. I couldn’t wait to open all my presents and eat lots of cake.
After my mother forces me to sit and eat breakfast, I am finally allowed to make my way to the back of the pack house where my party is being held. I run through the pack house kitchen and out the backdoor, the first thing that catches my attention in a huge, blue, bouncy castle.
All the pack kids seem to be here as I spot Sam and Lenny standing next to a man handing out candy floss, making my way towards them. I am stopped by someone placing a hand on my shoulder. I turn to find Amy. She is the same age as me and has always had a weird obsession with me that honestly creeps me out, but seeing as I am the future king, I’m forced to be polite. It doesn’t help that she seems to think we are going to be mates, which I hope we won’t be. Don’t get me wrong, Amy always used to be a nice girl, but these days, she seems to be trying too hard to impress me.
She is the daughter of my father’s beta, and recently, she has started putting this weird stuff on her face, causing her to have a slight orange tinge to her skin.
“Happy birthday Ace” She then thrusts a nicely wrapped box towards me.
“Uhm thank you Amy” I say quietly as I rub the back of my neck and take the present from her with my free hand. Just as I take the gift from her, I hear the unmistakable click of a camera followed by the awe’s coming from mine and Amy’s mothers.
“You two are so adorable, you will be able to show your children these photos when you have them.” Amy’s mum gushes as I roll my eyes. There is no way this girl will be my mate. The moon goddess wouldn’t be so cruel to me, surely.
I notice that the three girls are distracted while talking about what our children would look like and how big and extravagant the wedding Amy has already planned would be. I manage to slip away unnoticed and make a quick dash towards my friends. Now I can finally have fun and enjoy my birthday.
“Hey, what did Amy want?” Sam asks as we sip our juice.
“What do you think she wanted? That girl has already planned our wedding and I’m only ten!” I state my voice full of annoyance as my two best friends howl with laughter.
“She is going to be so mad if you two turn out not to be mates” Lenny adds between his laughter.
“Yeah, well, I have another eight years until I find out. Hopefully, she doesn’t try to force me to marry her before then.” I grumble out as my friend carries on laughing at my situation.
