Chapter 10 - Melody

1825 Words
My head was spinning all the way to the restaurant. It felt as though Palmer and Ace were talking to each other in a different language and other than being confused, I was also a little worried. Palmer seemed to be annoyed with Ace for not explaining things to me properly and that made me worry that there might be things things that he was hiding from me. He could even have been lying to me, although when I looked over to him and our eyes met I found that very hard to believe. There was something about the way he looked at me which seemed to soothe me all the way down to my soul. “What is this place?” I asked as we stepped through a door which looked more like the door to a house or small shop than the door to a restaurant. This confusion only deepened when I stepped inside. The restaurant may have looked small and unassuming from the outside but once we were inside it was grand and very opulent. It seemed to be much bigger than the outside implied, there must have been at least a hundred people eating dinner here but the place was still less than half full. “It is the best supernatural restaurant within fifty miles at least,” Ace told me as though it was the most normal thing in the world. I guess if he grew up with things like this then it would seem pretty normal, but to me, it was pretty mind-blowing. There was so much about this place that wasn’t normal, there was even a man sitting in the corner of the room who had horns. “I have never seen anything like this before,” I whispered. I didn’t even feel as though I should be here, I wasn’t supernatural. “You may have but you would never remember it. There is powerful magic that deters humans from entering places like this and if they did then they wouldn’t remember it.” I wasn’t sure I liked the idea of being referred to as human in a way that made it sound like an insult. “Does that mean I won’t remember this place?” “You will remember everything, you are no longer fully human after Ace bit you.” “What?” A cold chill travelled down my spine. Ace shot a frustrated look over towards his friend then pulled me into his arms. I tried to resist but I was powerless when I came to Ace and I was sure we both knew it. I resisted him for a few seconds before melting into his embrace. “It’s not as bad as Palmer made it sound and I promise I will explain everything to you once we are sat down,” he whispered while stroking my hair. He was holding me so tight that I couldn’t even nod my head so instead I mumbled a few words in agreement. I would trust Ace for now but if I didn’t like what he was about to tell me then I could always knee him in the balls and run away. “You are such a good girl, perfect in every way,” Ace told me just as the waitress was walking over to us. She smiled when she heard how Ace was talking to me, her eyes flickering silver for just a second before returning back to their more normal brown colour again. “I’m so glad that you finally found your mate, I was starting to get worried about you.” The waitress let out a small laugh before showing us to a table. She walked a few steps in front of me and as she did I could feel jealousy starting to gnaw at me. She was exactly the kind of woman that Ace used to sleep with before me, she was tall, slender and elegant. That combined with the fact that she seemed to know him convinced me that they had been together in the past. I followed her to our table in silence and waited for her to hand out menus to each of us. Once she was done she came up beside me and bent over so that she could whisper in my ear. “You don’t need to worry about Ace. Not only have we never slept together, but I know for a fact that from this day forward he would never want to be with anyone other than you.” It sounded as though she was speaking directly to my insecurities, as though she had picked the thoughts straight out of my brain. I wanted to ask her what was going on but when I turned around she was nowhere to be seen. “Why do vampires always disappear like that?” Palmer asked. “They like showing off,” Acre replied while shrugging his shoulders. “Vampires also exist? How many supernatural creatures are there?” My head was starting to feel as though it might explode and they hadn’t even started to explain things to me yet. “There are quite a few, pretty much every myth or legend that humans have is based to some extent in fact. Although we should probably save the details for another time.” I nodded my head. Ace was probably right, if he started telling me about all the things that lurked in the shadows then I would probably never be able to sleep again. Trying to push thoughts or dangerous creatures out of my mind, I looked down at the menu in front of me. This place really did seem to cater for all kinds of creatures, there were pages of food options and none of them looked particularly appealing. I turned the pages of the menu faster, desperately trying to find something I could eat until I reached a page that was headed with the word ‘Fae’ and mostly consisted of fancy-sounding salads. Ace glanced at the page and raised one of his eyebrows before turning a couple of extra pages until he reached a page titled ‘Shifters’. This page was filled with meat-heavy meals such as burgers and steaks, the food sounded so amazing that it made my stomach rumble. The noise drew Palmer’s attention and caused Ace to laugh. “At least you’re not a vegetarian. That would be a little awkward.” I must have looked puzzled by Palmer’s words because Ace pulled my chair closer to him and wrapped one arm around my waist. “What he is trying to say is, that it would be difficult for a vegetarian to get enough protein. You are turning into a werewolf and the transformation into your wolf form causes a lot of muscle damage. The damage heals quickly but only if we eat enough protein.” As Ace spoke he kissed my neck, I knew he was doing it as a way of keeping me calm but that didn’t stop it from working. “Why do you keep saying I am turning into a werewolf? Is that why you bit me?” “Not at all. Biting completes our bond to each other and makes our relationship stronger, you become a werewolf is just a small side effect.” “If you think that is only a small side effect then I would hate to see what you think of as a large side effect. Is there anything else you haven’t told me? Am I going to be growing any extra limbs or maybe start sniffing other people’s butts like dogs do?” I was ranting a little bit and I could tell that both Palmer and Ace were struggling to keep a straight face. However, my indignation was damn well justified. Palmer was right when he said that Ace should have told me all of this before he bit me. “There is nothing else. Being a werewolf will make you stronger and make you live much longer than a normal human. It really isn’t anything that you need to worry about.” “Well, there is the whole heat thing,” Palmer added, making Ace scowl. He clearly didn’t want to tell me about that, so I needed him to tell me all about it. When I said as much, Ace glared at Palmer and let out a long sigh before starting to explain what having a heat would be like. Even though it was Palmer who had raised the subject, hearing about it seemed to be making him very uncomfortable. After a few minutes, he made an excuse to step outside and make a phone call. “It will be fine, more couples really enjoy going through heat together. Who wouldn’t enjoy spending three or four days having tonnes of s*x?” He kissed and nibbled on my neck. “It seems like a little much, but at least I wouldn’t be able to get pregnant.” “What are you talking about?” Ace asked, his eyes burning into me. “I have an implant that stops me from getting pregnant.” “We can solve that, it will only take a few seconds.” His voice was low and he pulled me closer to his body as he spoke and his lips were millimetres away from the skin on my neck. “You can’t seriously be planning to take my implant out right here.” “Why not?” He asked while nibbling on my neck. When I looked down I could clearly see his erection pressing against his jeans. I was going to need to talk to him about this when he wasn’t so turned on, I doubted I would get much sense out of him while he was like this. “If you like my c**k so much then maybe we could forget about dinner and go back home,” “I was just…” Around us sirens started to sound. My eyes darted around the room as I tried to search for any sign of danger. Palmer was standing just inside the doorway of the restaurant, there was a woman standing beside him with her hand on his arm. She looked to be incredibly angry with him over something although I couldn’t hear what they were talking about. Staff from the restaurant were running over towards them. They spoke to the woman for a few minutes before practically pushing the woman back out of the door. A few seconds later Palmer came back to the table looking frustrated. “Sorry about that, some human followed me here to talk about some research project that we were meant to do together.” He rolled his eyes as he sat down at the table. “Well, I am glad you are back because I was just about to start telling Melody about our pack.”
