The Birthday party
"Shai Harriet! " Will you please just hurry up? " You don't want us to be punished by the Alpha again, do you? " My mother yelled.
"Coming, mum," I yelled back.
I took one last look in my mirror, admiring my favorite silvery blue dress. I was actually looking forward to tonight, and that would definitely surprise a few people. Laughing to myself, i thought about what was going to be the best night of my life. You see, tonight was the night. My mate Damien and I would announce to everyone that we were mates and had found each other at last. All those countless times Amber and her posse had belittled, beaten, and bullied me would be over. I had my mate, and he would love and protect me forever.
Tonight was going to be so special that I had nervous butterflies in my stomach thinking about it. Nothing, and no one was going to stand in the way of my happiness tonight, not even the Alpha's spoiled daughter Amber.
Today was Amber's 18th birthday, and Alpha Franklin and Luna Ava had invited every member of the midnight pack to a spectacular party in her honor. Not that she deserved it!
Picking up my clutch and phone, I exited the bedroom and went downstairs. Mum was standing by the front door waiting for me.
"You look great, mum," I said, giving her a quick hug.
Mum smiled at me and replied," You too, sunshine. I was about to send out the search party. "
Laughing, I said,"Come on, let's go, I'm ready when you are, "
We jumped in mum's small mini-coupe and off we went to the pack house. We were there before I even had time to think about tonight. I told Mum I was off to find my friends and left her talking to the Alpha and Luna at the door.
I must admit they've definitely gone all out with the decorations tonight. I've never seen the packhouse look so glamorous. It was beautifully decked out in elaborate and artistic fashion. Stunning crystal chandeliers hung around the room embellished with diamonds, so when the light caught, it made beautiful patterns across the floor. It seemed like every chair they owned was placed around the room, so everyone had a perfect view of the Alpha's table. With a separate area for everyone to dance.
A large corner-style elongated table was set up with a huge array of different foods. Charcuterie boards with different meats and cheeses, trays of custard tarts and profiteroles, different types of salad, with the pièce de résistance being the huge four-tiered chocolate cake, the number 18 printed in gold glitter with a figurine of what could only be Amber sat on top. They really had thought of everything, and everyone who was anyone was there.
Everyone was wearing their best. As far as the eye could see, there was a multicolor of finaries. Everyone was trying to up each other with how good they all looked. I was starting to feel overwhelmed and underdressed. Mum and I didn't come from much, but what we had made us happy and mum tried her best with what she had. Out of the corner of my eye, I spy Damien, and my somber mood soon dissipates. Things will be so different for me and Mum after tonight.
He was drop-dead gorgeous. Beautiful blonde hair that he'd slicked back so it didn't obscure those green eyes. That one look spoke to my very sole. Tall with biceps and Abbs to die for, every girl's dream come true, and he was all mine.
He hadn't noticed me yet. The person he was talking to was just out of sight. As I walked closer, I saw who it was and changed my direction, heading towards the buffet table. Surprise, surprise, he was talking to Amber. God, I really do hate her. Don't get me wrong, I tried to go down the friend's route, but she was just ugly on the inside. Didn't like anyone who looked better than her. She even went as far as cutting a girl's hair because someone she liked commented saying how pretty she looked.
When I decided I didn't want to be around her anymore, Amber and her posse made my days at school unbearable. Spoiled little rich girls that's all they are, and of course Damien is talking to her. It is her birthday, after all. It doesn't mean I have to like it. Thinking nothing more of it, I continue looking for my friends in the direction of the wonderful spread on offer. I finally find them both pilling their plates high with food. My friends Lilly and Autumn were absolutely stunning. Lily had her crimson hair styled in waves down her back. She wore a gorgeous red off-the-shoulder dress that just showed off her features perfectly. Autumn, on the other hand, was darker in nature, and her color of choice was a dark blue love heart dress that made her curves stand out in all the right places. Her bronze hair was placed in a neat bun, so her unmarked neck was on full display. "Love the dress girls," I said playfully, "someone's definitely trying to attract the unmated males' attention tonight". Autumn gave a quick shrug of the shoulders, then, laughing, said to me, "Yep, I don't care, it's about time we let our hair down for once", Lilly agreed. "You only live once, gotta make the most of it". She said, shoveling yet more food down her neck. "You OK Shai, you seem a little on edge." Autumn asked me. My best friends know me too well sometimes, and keeping this secret from them for a full month has been hard. I didn't have to wait much longer than I could tell them everything. Collecting a glass of champagne off the waiter that passed, I shook my head. " I'm OK, just tired and don't particularly enjoy being in the devil's presence." Autumn seemed to accept my lie easily and carried on pilling her plate with food. "You look gorgeous tonight., the way that dress makes your eyes pop, i would eat you and im straight hahaha" "Thanks Lilly, it is my favorite dress and tonight everyone's wearing there best for this special occasion" I was getting even more nervous as the minutes ticked by wondering what i was going to do next. If I had known what was to come I would have stayed at home in bed, or faked my own death.
