Chapter 1
Rose started to awaken by the noise of her door being opened and the light streaming through her window beside her bed, the morning light lighting up her bedroom. As she fought to open up her eyes she saw her mother, smiling widely at her at her door. "Good morning 18 year old!" She cheered happily. Thats right, Rose turned 18 today. "Thanks mama" Rose said with a tired voice. Her mother then turned her heel and walked away from the door, heading towards the living room. "I wish I got to sleep in today!" Rose called out with slight anger in her voice. "Hah! Never! Come on and open up your presents!" her mother called out. Her father's laughter was heard from the living room. Rose slowly started to stand up, not wanting to become light-headed from standing up too quickly. She'd start to walk towards the living room. There she saw her mother and father sitting on the lounge with two presents on the coffee table. "It might not look like much, but these are big presents," her father said with a gruff voice. Her mother had bright curly ginger hair with blue eyes, and a semi-slim body. And her father had black hair with green eyes and a dark beard growing around his mouth, and he had a big belly. Rose inherited her mother's hair and eyes but her father's personality and temperament. Rose sat in the chair across from them and took the biggest of the presents first and started to open it. It revealed a white iPhone, the latest release in purple. "So whenever you are away from home you can keep in contact with us." Her father said as he pointed at the box "Purple was your mama's idea, I personally wanted you to have a red one." He laughed as her mother poked him in the arm hard. "You know she likes purple!" Her mother laughed alongside my father. "I know, I just like the red one better". He laughed Rose smiled "Then you get a red one!" She laughed "But thank you." "You are welcome my love. Now open up the other one." Her mother pushed the other, smaller present towards her. Rose picked up the present that was carefully wrapped and started to slowly unwrap it as it seemed delicate. There sat a black box. She knew it contained jewelry from the fancy shiny black box. She opened it slowly and there sat a heart locket. She'd take the locket in her fingers and open it. There sat a photo of her parents and her at what seemed to be a fancy house. She had to be what, 3 at the time? She couldn't remember this photo or what they were doing when it was taken. Her mother sniffled, which made Rose look up. "So wherever you go, you'll always have us with you." Rose stood up and went up to her mother, kneeling down in front of her. "I'll always be here with you guys. I don't know what to even do now." She said as she went to hug her mother. Her father patted them both on the back as her mother sobbed on Rose's shoulder. Rose had been home-schooled by both her parents. They taught her everything from cooking, cleaning, gardening, to fishing, hunting and to fight, but never prepared her for outside the house. She didn't even know what she would do now, now that her schooling from her parents were done, she didn't even know where to begin. They had never discussed it which concerned Rose. Maybe her mother didn't want to let her go yet, hence why they haven't had the conversation yet. Her mother then stood up. "I'll prepare breakfast then," she said as she went towards the kitchen. Rose looked towards her father, who shrugged, then picked up her phone box. "Let's get this thing set up then, huh?" he said. The rest of the day went by like any other day that she didn't have to be schooling. It felt like most of the holidays she'd remembered. Her father put on some music from the radio as they all sat around the living room and played some board games, eating special breakfast and lunch that her mother made with all Rose's favorite food. But the dinner was her favorite dinner that her father made specially for her. Rose loved pasta dishes, so it was hard for her to choose a favorite, so she told him to surprise her. So he made fresh Spaghetti Bolognese with lamb mince, carrot, tomato and garlic, freshly made spaghetti, topping it off with parmesan cheese. It is always her favorite dish ever since she was little. After they finished eating, her mother disappeared to the kitchen, followed by her father, who carried the dishes. Rose then headed towards the living room to sit and wait for them. She started staring blankly into the TV which was turned off. She heard the slight conversation that was happening between her mother and father, but they had taught her never to listen in on another person's conversation as it is considered rude to, so she tuned them out and leaned back into the leather lounge and fiddled with her new phone. Her father had put both his and her mothers numbers into the phone if they were ever needed, and to call anytime. She played on a new app she installed, a puzzle app which she seemed to enjoy. Her father entered the living room, followed by her mother carrying a birthday cake. "Happy birthday my sweet Rose", Her father said as he sat down beside her, wrapping his arm around her and shaking her gently. Mother placed the cake on the coffee table, she lit the candles with a match and then they started singing Happy birthday. While Rose didn't have friends to celebrate her birthday, she felt happy, truly happy to be celebrating her birthday with her parents. She felt tears well in her eyes as they finished singing. "Make a wish" her mother said. Rose closed her eyes and wished a big wish before blowing out the candles. Her parents both clapped before they started to eat the cake together. It was a chocolate mud cake with M&Ms on top, with wording on it saying "Happy 18th Birthday Rose". The rest of the night was spent in the living room as they watched a movie together, a dinosaur one, picked out by Rose. At the end of the movie, her mother got up, saying that she was going to get Rose a special drink before bed. She said it was a family tradition to drink this before bed on their 18th birthday. The drink was brown, almost looking like her Milo milk drinks she makes sometimes. Smelling it, it smelt exactly like chocolate but with a different smell to it, something different. When she tasted it, it definitely tasted different than to what she expected, but it tasted really good! So she drank the whole lot. Her father then hushed her off to bed. She slipped on some purple PJs before both her parents entered her room. "We love you darling." Her mother said sweetly before giving her a big hug and a kiss on the forehead. Rose chuckled as she hugged her mother back. "I love you too mama." Her mother let her go before she left her room. Her father walked up to her and put his hand on her shoulder. "Love ya kiddo". He said before he turned and left, closing her door. Rose felt like it was a bit weird of them to do so, that wasn't normal behavior for them to do something like that. Before she could even take a step forward, she suddenly felt very tired. She was barely able to make it to her bed before she passed out.
