Chapter 8

Rose was making herself a glass of water as Sullivan emerged from his bedroom, his hair messy and disheveled from his night's sleep. "Sleep well?" Rose would ask as she leaned against the kitchen counter. Sully nodded "Sure." He grumbled before he made his way to the bathroom. Thinking about the bathroom, Rose hadn't seen the bathroom herself yet. She imagined it was fancy, with a shower and a bath. As she wandered into the living room, she noticed the lounge was slightly covered in black fur. In fact, the whole house was covered in it. Even her bed was, but this was their way, and Rose had to accept that. A commotion outside caught her attention. As she went over to the window, she saw a pair of wolves with their child, a freshly turned pup by the looks of it with its wobbly legs as it tried to walk. Its parents were there, encouraging it. She'd watch in awe for a bit as the little pup took more steps with confidence. "What you lookin' at?" She heard her housemate behind her walking up to her, and peaking over her shoulder "Ah, yeah, that happened last night. First shift," he said "Protective parents that we are, had to be there for it." Rose smiled before nodding. "Yeah, when does it happen?" She turned and looked at Sully, who seemed to have a non-readable expression on his face. "Midnight. For a young pup, it's quick because they are quite small." He said as he turned away from the window and sat down on the lounge, "With their parents being there to encourage them. They'll shift alongside them, showing them what to do. They are just getting them used to being in that way. When they get older, shifting will be easier and they won't need their parents' support." Rose nodded before she turned away from the window, the pup and their parents were walking away from their home and disappeared out of sight. Her belly then rumbled in hunger. She chuckled "Guess I'm hungry. Surprised though, I ate so much of my dinner last night." "That's a good thing," Sully said before he stood up from the lounge. He stuck one hand in his jean pocket before he walked up to the front door. "Means your settling in well, and because we don't have any food here, I'll take you to breakfast, then we can start shopping." Rose quickly walked up to him with a smile, she was excited about exploring the village more than what she had done with Blanca yesterday. "Sounds like fun." Sully opened up the front door and stepped out, "You sure you have the stamina for it?" he said, as Rose exited the house with him. "I think I can handle it." Sully huffed out a laugh before he locked the front door. "I'll hold you to that." As they made their way down the street, at the end of their street, an old man greeted them, he had gray hair and blue eyes, wrinkles spreading throughout her body, he walked with a slight limp, his back bent forward. He welcomed them to the neighborhood, his wife, a wolf around her husband's age was with him. In her form, her gray muzzle stretches from her nose to her eyes. They both noticed who Sullivan was as they greeted him. "Sullivan," The old man spoke as he took Sully's hand to shake, "Been a while, heard you moved into number thirty-two, you starting a family or something?" The old she-wolf pushed in between them. "Don't be silly, love, Sullivan won't be settling down for a while, at least not with her." The old man didn't even notice Rose before his wife pointed her out, "Oh! I'm sorry darling I didn't see you there." He said before he took Rose's hand and shook it himself, he then gently kissed her hand before he sniffed the air "You are human," He said as he looked up at Rose "Explains why I couldn't sense your wolf, or smell you." He then looked down at her collar around her neck. Sullivan then spoke up "Harold, Susan, this is Rose, she.." Sullivan then paused "Was a gift from the Alpha." Harold then looked at Sullivan, then back at Rose, "I see.." Susan then butted in, "Well, I think she's beautiful regardless if she's human or not," She said as she looked at Rose with her yellow eyes. "Welcome to the pack darling, I hope you enjoy it." Rose smiled as she took her hand out to stroke Susan's brown fur. "Thank you ma'am, your coat is beautiful." Susan's wolf then started to purr like a cat. "Thank you darling." Rose's eyes widened at the sound "You can purr?" She then looked at Sullivan. "Yes, we can purr, mainly it happens when we're happy," Sullivan said. "Explains why I never heard you purr yet." Rose joked. "Hey.." Sullivan said with a slight frown "Just haven't had anything exciting happen recently." He said as he placed his hands in his jean pockets. Susan chuckled "I like her already," she said "Have you youngins had breakfast yet?" "No Susan, we don't have food in the house, hence why we're on our way to Levi's." Sullivan said. "Oh you should have said something! We would of fed you!" Susan whined. Sullivan chuckled. "I know you would've, but Rose wants to explore the village, so whenever I send her to do errands for me she knows where everything is." "I see.. well have fun you two." Harold said as she stood beside his wife. Susan whined as she looked up at her husband, who patted her head. "They can come around another time darling." He said before he turned back to their house and sat in the chair on the veranda and drank his coffee. Sullivan then took Rose's arm and started to lead her away, "It was lovely meeting you two." Rose said as she followed Sullivan. Once again they walked in a comfortable silence before Rose spoke up "What did he mean by, sense my wolf?" "Werewolves can sense each other. If you had one, you'd have a unique scent and his wolf would be able to sense yours and vice versa." "I see.. how do you know them?" She asked. "They.. knew my parents.." Sully said in a low tone. Rose then took it upon herself to shut down the conversation. She raised her hand to pat Sullivan on the upper arm, who looked at her with slight confusion at what she was doing. "I won't push further unless you wish to." she paused "But I'm sorry," she said. "Thanks.." He mumbled before they continued on. As they neared the end of the street that theirs connected to, a few shops came into view on the otherside of the pathway. Along them was a small cafe, called 'Food, Coffee and Howls.' Which Sullivan pulled her in the direction of. "Can I ask you something, Sullivan?" Rose said as she looked up at him. "Shoot." "Why don't you have cars or roads to drive on?" "Ah, had a feeling you'd ask that." He chuckled, "The fumes and smell of the cars is very strong for us, since our sense of smell is enhanced. It can make any wolf sick with headaches. Hence, why we don't have them. The same can be said with roads." He paused. "Plus, we can walk long distances without getting tired." "I see," She trailed off as they reached the cafe. Sullivan opened the door for her which she nodded in thanks. The place was small, but cozy, lounges with small coffee tables were spread out throughout the place, fairy lights scattered the roof, obviously a place to relax and cool off after a long day and a good place to start the morning. There was a display case of food and cakes on the counter, behind that was a barista machine and a man tending to it. He was pale, with red hair like Rose, except his was lighter in colour. "Sullivan." He growled out loud "Knew I smelt you." "Yeah, you always knew I wouldn't be able to sneak up on you." Sullivan said as he gestured to Rose to find a seat. "Heard you moved into a bigger home. How come you never told me you were seeing someone?" The man laughed as he started to steam some milk. "I haven't been.." Only then did the red head turn around and saw Rose sitting there in his shop, his eyes went straight to her collar. He frowned as he turned to Sullivan. "Really?" He scoffed "Didn't think you liked humans." Rose suddenly felt uncomfortable. If that is how Sullivan feels about humans, why didn't he fight not to be gifted her? "She was a gift from the Alpha," Sullivan then spoke up, taking Rose out of her thoughts. "And you know how he is." He mumbled. "Stubborn as all hell, as the Luna puts it." Sullivan then turned to Rose as she looked up, "This is Levi, we've been childhood friends since birth basically." He then gestured to Rose "This is Rose." Levi huffed in a greeting before he turned back to Sullivan. "Maybe he wants what happened between Lily and I to happen." Rose's head tilted to the side at that comment, "That's completely different!" Sullivan argued. "She was bought to work in the packhouse. After I tasted her cooking, I just had to have her work here! It's not my fault Lupin can't keep his paws to himself." He growled out, Lupin must be his wolf. "Yeah, after you went all feral at the full moon." He said as he snapped up a menu and stalked off to the lounge that Rose had chosen. He plopped himself next to her, almost too close. He then gave the menu to Rose. "Pick anything you want." "You've gone soft Sullivan!" Levi then called out, which made Sullivan growl loudly, which made Rose jump slightly in her seat. "Say that again, Levi, and I will break your neck!" He growled, the voice of Kylo coming forth, his yellow eyes booming at his friend in anger. "Is that a challenge?" Levi said as he exited from behind the counter. "Get Lily here, let her decide." He growled before his eyes went back to dark brown. Levi's eyes clouded over, almost exactly how Mary's eyes did the first morning she met her, he must be mindlinking Lily. His eyes then clouded back to normal. "She's on her way anyway, she was delivering breakfast to someone." He said as he went back behind the counter. Rose decided on pancakes, with nutella spread for breakfast. While Sullivan ordered a bacon and egg roll with BBQ sauce. As Sullivan sat back down after paying, a small, petite, young woman entered the cafe. She had black hair tied into a ponytail with pale skin, darker than Levi's, a rounded face with plush cheeks and brown eyes. "Sullivan." She then spoke up. "I heard that you moved!" She exclaimed in excitement before she noticed Rose sitting beside him, like everyone else, she didn't notice her first, probably because they couldn't smell her. "Oh, I see!" She then clapped her hands together "You got gifted a human! How exciting for you." She then approached them, "Hi there, I'm Lily, I'm Levi's mate." She then took out her hand to shake Rose's. Rose gently took out her hand and took Lily's hand to shake, before she was pulled into a hug by her. Her breath escaped her as she was bashed against the girl's chest with such force. Lily then stood back "Oh, I'm sorry! Still not used to this." She chuckled. Rose took in deep breaths in order to catch her breath, "No no it's okay," She breathed out before she caught her breath. Levi then approached, his arm sneaking to touch her back. "Hey baby," He said before he kissed her cheek, "I need you to do me a favour." Lily sighed in content "What now?" "Sullivan threatened to break my neck after I called him soft. I need your permission to spar him." He purred as he rubbed his chest and torso over her back. "And what's the favor"? "They've ordered breakfast, I've already started on the pancakes for Rose." "So you want me to continue their breakfast while you two spar?" "Yes dear." A light growl rumbled from Lily's throat "Fine, but you owe me." She said as she stood out of Levi's grip as she made her way behind the counter and tended to Rose's and Sullivan's breakfast. Levi grinned wide as Sullivan started to stand quickly, they both darted out of the cafe as quickly as a kangaroo. Rose looked out the door in amazement as they disappeared. "They used to spar all the time, those two, before Sullivan went into his depression." Lily spoke up as she had noticed Rose's amazement, which made her look at the girl behind the counter as she flipped the pancakes. "What happened?" Rose asked. "His parents." Lily paused before continuing "One then the other." Lily then plated Rose's pancakes and brought them out to her, a small bowl of nutella was also brought out to her. "But, what happened to them should be told by him, not me," Lily said as she placed Rose's breakfast on the table infront of her. "Now, would you like a drink? Those boys will be gone for a while." Rose nodded "A milkshake, banana, thank you." "Coming right up." Rose then leaned back against the lounge she was seated in, and placed the plate of pancakes on her lap and started to eat them. She wasn't given a fork, but just a butter knife just to spread the nutella on. She ate with her hands, just like she had seen the others eat in the packhouse yesterday morning. Yet Sullivan ate his dinner yesterday with a knife and fork like a normal person. Only when she thought about it did she decide to ask Lily about it when she came back with her drink. "Oh, well, the higher ups are taught to eat with a knife and fork around other Alphas and their higher ups. However, when they are in the packhouse without any guests, they eat how they want to. For them, it's more comfortable to eat with their hands. You can eat anyway you want." Now that made sense to Rose's human brain. She nodded in thanks as Lily walked back behind the counter and started on the bacon and eggs for Sullivan.
