In a small room with the size of ten-meter long and twenty meters wide, made out of wood and some pipelines by the wall, the walls were plainly painted in white whereas, the roof was made of wood covering, plain and shiny layer.
This room was a patient’s room among one of the rooms in the great hospital named WIC Company’s hospital. It had a big twin door window at the right which one door was opened and the other was shut. Through the white silky curtains that were spread aside of the open window, a cold breeze was blowing through cooling down the room from its midday heat.
On the right side was the bed, there was a young boy of age eighteen laying on the comfortable soft bed with a white blanket covering his whole body till his shoulder. He was bandaged over his hand, half of his head, and all over his body that was covered under his patient clothes and the blanket. This youth’s name was Joe.
Due to the serious injuries he received back from the school, he had to be in the hospital for a couple of days.
As he was lying there still like a statue on the bed, beside his bed on the left was the lady named Maglet who had adopted him as her own child. She was called mother or sometimes aunty by the boy.
Mrs. Maglet was a young lady of twenty-seven years. She had beautiful dark yellow hairs that were highlighted with flu yellow and shades of light orange under and through her lovely thick hairs.
According to the right complexion of her silky hairs, she had pretty sky blue eyes those that remarked a fair language of decent personality in them as they shone in white shine glittering in plain blue sparkles. She had a plain skin color face with little acne on her face but, they didn’t stop her beauty.
She wore a long blue dress with a V collar around her neck covering her till her feet. It was designed with a few yellow circles embodies and small pink flowers all over her dress. Over it, she wore a cloak red in color with the same color plain bonnet on her head.
Her back story wasn’t as happy as any child can have. She was a lonely girl ever since her parents passed away. She grew up alone in the houses of her own relatives changing at every age she crossed however, once she crossed fourteen, she was thrown out of the house with yelling to go and live on her own. She was left homeless for one night when in the next daybreak a young man found her buying food in a shop.
While people were getting started with their routines work, this man started his work by offering his shop to her. He told her that he had to go on a task and that he needed someone to run his shop in the duration of his absence.
At first, Maglet didn’t agree, she told him that he was a stranger to her, and secondly, how would he make her believe his words just by an offer given on the first day and first look.
To her surprise, this young stranger simply pulled a key out of his pocket and placed it on her bag. With this mysterious act, he walked away in silence not even speaking a single greeting of the day or farewell for her new shop.
It was kind of a weird experience for her that how all of a sudden her life was going to change by simply owning a shop without any hardship. Since the key was delivered to her, she had no way to reject it but, accept the offer and head to the site.
Though the man didn’t even mention the shop name, the street number or the location instead he simply disappeared. Little Maglet could only seek her way to the given shop by the name printed on the key ‘Ringdom’.
Her search began by roaming the streets, turning left and right, going front and back, reading all the boards of the shop printed on the signboard such as bakery, Tailors, Postman, Stamp shop, Writing-shop, etc.
In the year of eighteen century where steamed cars and horse carts ran together on the streets which were crowded with people dressed in old English fashion dress. Full suits with hats and caps for men, full dresses, Victorian dresses for ladies, fashioned with umbrellas, fans hats and bonnet. This was the age where Joe and his friends lived, an old English fashioned time.
Meanwhile, as Maglet was on her patriot searching for the shop, it took her an entire day from sunrise to sunset. Under the bright orange sky where the sun was setting to the west, Maglet’s high boots suddenly stopped.
Frozen in astonishment, she saw a large building full of windows and glass doors. With a poster of night sky wallpaper posted at the left side of the window glass, on the right was a picture of a huge fantasy palace under a cloudy sky painted in an extreme level hand technique both eye-catching in marvelous color.
At the center was the huge board, hanging on top of the door, on this signboard was finally written the name she got worn out searching for it.
Ringdom book store.
And that was how she ran the book store chosen for her mysteriously. On the other hand, Joe knew her background. As long as he lived with her she shared everything with him. Her past, her background, her works, her duties, her payments, she saved money, her feelings, her problems, her wishes, her dreams, her hopes, her plans, her secrets, her treasures, her favorite books, her meals, her snacks, her all kind of stuff, she kept him as her own son, her brother, her nephew, her partner, her part-time job, her employer and above all her best friend.
She cared for him a lot and never wished for him to get any hurt, injury or wounds with broken bones. She was very happy for him to be by her side.
Hence, this was the first time she got stabbed in her heart by the shock of how Joe’s condition was.
As it was mentioned earlier, Joe stayed unconscious for three days, this poor decent lady didn’t stop for a bit in visiting him in the hospital. In a day nearly five times nonstop attendance she did for him just in the hope to see him alive. She would lock her shop or forcefully empty it from customers just so she could rush towards the big hospital on foot and watch her boy. She didn’t mind her exhaustion or care for her customer’s temper. All she wanted to view was the returning of Joe and nothing else mattered.
She was noticed by all in the hospital and the street around. They wondered what has been gone wrong with her as she’s running around like a rabbit here and there. However, no one could help her out.
Once Joe returned to the world, the poor lady’s worries got washed away like cleaning off dirt from a coat. She burst in tears before Joe could even get his sigh back. She was finally, overwhelmed in excitement and enjoyment to get her Joe back.
Though she was a lonely girl growing alone in this world, Maglet had something valuable to live for and struggle her life for him. It was her adopted boy, Joe.
At present, she was sitting in the noon light reading a storybook for Joe. A short storybook she picked up for Joe from the collection of children’s section. It was the story of a fox who wanted to eat the flock of sheep but, couldn’t get through due to the strict shepherd.
In short, this fox disguised itself into a fluffy sheep and ran into the sheep. This way every day the sheep kept disappearing mysteriously for the shepherd with no understanding of how or why they were taken.
On the other hand, the wicked fox every day enjoyed one or two sheep full of fresh meat bags without any fear of danger.
As the story ended, Maglet closed her book commenting “I can’t believe how clever a fox can be, I know they are known for their clever heads but, this one is way worse, right?” she giggled after saying this.
However, for Joe he was smiling lightly when he commented sadly “it reminds me of the Reaper…” his smile faded.
“Pardon, who is the Reaper?” she asked confused.
With a little chuckle, he replied “no one, just my imagination.”
There is something hidden mysteriously in the face of truth inside each of us which we can’t reveal to one another, even to our truth-worthy people, just in fear that our relationship may ruin because of it.
In a peaceful city, a school had turned into a dangerous escape zone game, who would believe that. Everyone lived happily and peacefully in this place full of routines and a simple lifetime what else can puzzle a person.
Despair, pain fear everything that occurred Joe could only keep it within himself. He couldn’t speak out to common talks perhaps it may worry his mother Maglet. Thus, he chose to remain silent.
As Maglet was packing up, he asked “Mother a question?”
“Yes, anything my boy” she answered sitting back near him.
“Do you….. d” he hesitated asking this question fearing that he might not get the answer he wishes “do you know what happened to my friends?”
“Your friends?” puzzled Maglet thinking when a shock surprised her “you mean the three young boys always by your side Jin, Jet, and Jan?” Joe nodded lightly.
For a while, she thought when she came up with an answer. She told him that since you fainted she never heard anything about them. However, during the reporting of the accident she had been visited by two people, one was the classroom teacher Sevin and the other his friend Jin.
These two people came up to her shop and informed her of the tragic news. Sevin rented up a cart for her to the way towards the hospital when he requested Jin to return home and the two split their ways.
“After that I’ve never heard anything from them. I am sorry, Joe”
“Aow I see, no problem that is enough” smiled the boy turning his head straight.
The only thing he could move around was his head whereas the rest of the body was solid due to lack of strength and deep injuries.
Later, Maglet picked up her bag and stood up saying “I will be leaving now, Joe. I will try to visit you in the evening, take a rest and eat well got?”
“You too, mother” agreed on Joe requesting her not to push herself so much. He asked her to take care of herself too and not to worry too much about him, try to have rest least she could avoid getting herself ill just like this boy who ended up on the bed.
Miss Maglet laughed replying “I am not like my stubborn Joe. Anyway, I will be leaving for the shop, take care son” she walked away to the door, opened it, waved back at him, and left by shutting the door behind.
Releasing a deep sigh, Joe lay comforting himself straight on the bed stretching his body on the soft bed. In the deep pin-drop silent room, where the wind blowing was heard as loud as a trumpet, Joe stayed as an idol on the bed staring at the plain empty ceiling.
As he watched there, he wondered about Miss Maglet’s words how on earth did Jin have that much trust that he accompanied along with a man who swiped away their peaceful friendship life upside down?
What made him get along that Reaper?
Was he threatened to do this cause Sevin had no idea about the location of Joe’s house and he must have asked them to help along?
If so, his friend wasn’t that cowardly to lay their lives in front of him. Hopefully, it could be attempted by the will of his choice. Whatever had happened after the darkening covered up his eyes, he really hoped all his friends were safe and sound outside.
Joe turned his head to the right wall when an irritating feeling came on his neck “Ah! what is this?”
Slowly and carefully he lifted up his left hand avoiding any pain to rise in his movements, he reached to his neck to scratch it when suddenly, he got shocked out of his skin.
A sensation of pure leather plain and smooth about 10 inch wide, there was a stuff attached around his neck, “what….?” shocked the boy as he ran passing his hand all around his neck from left to right, squeaking back of his head again coming front all with his left hand when he exclaimed “a belt around my neck? But how?! Who kept this? And when?”
“It from them…. boy” came up a gloomy and hollow reply that send goosebumps down Joe’s spine.
His heart began to race in its beat as he swallowed the saliva down his dry throat. No one was available at the room then who spoke this?
Who replied to him?
For a while he stayed still, thinking who could be there. He looked at the wall when suddenly his heart stopped beating in fear.
A dark shadow standing on the wall, it seemed to be of a little creature with its hair flying. This light was from the window that was located on the opposite side which means someone was available in this room with him.
With his teeth clenching his lips and his eyes wide opened as though it were stretched out of the socket, they had completely lost the rule of blinking. He caught up his guts and turned to the left! He turned solid as fear devolved him.
It was there where he didn’t expect it to be. Standing by the dark shade at the left side of the window, a small heighted girl with long white dress, black hollow eyes with her black hairs all spread over her pale face, and with a creepy thin stretched smile she stared straight at the patient on the bed.
Though it was afternoon outside and the sun was ready to set, it may be not frightening to see a weird creature out in light but, what’s horribly scary is with the question, why are the horrible midnight creatures here out in the daylight?
What’s making them step to the light when darkness is their best friend?
Joe was completely frightened by looking at her. His heartbeat pumped till his head that felt as though it was hammering his skull. That ghostly creature smiled greeting,
“How are you patient?”
On her reply, Joe lips shivered as his breath choked in his throat and he answered in one word squeezing out the air “….Luca………..”
