Chapter 15Nick moved his hands carefully over Dean’s unconscious body. He murmured his findings to himself, then ran them down his mental checklist. John had done a good job of stabilizing the injured man under the difficult conditions. Most of the smaller cuts were already covered with makeshift bandages and in the light of their combined flashlights blood loss seemed minimal. But John also stated Dean drifted in and out of consciousness. His skin felt cool and clammy, and his pulse skipped erratically under Nick’s fingers. Nick bit the inside of his cheek and wished all over again he had more than brief rotation through the ER. What had Michael taunted? Nick’s experiences were mainly snotty noses and heartburn? The easy dismissal may have offended Nick, but Michael wasn’t wrong. Today
