The White Paper

958 Words
The room was dead silent, as perfect as a Minute silence was observed in honor of the calling off of the engagement. Liam kept on staring at me with a white paper in his hands, one I recognized. What shocked me most was I never showed it to anyone and I kept it just inside my car pidgin hole. How did he get hold of this paper? “How could you?” Waving the paper in his hands to my face, with a look of disappointment which he threw away after a few seconds. “I can explain” I muttered as I couldn't place the right words for what just happened. The entire room stood surprised at our conversation, with everyone wondering what was going on. I tried to look at my parents, and they both responded with their hands turning open, begging for explanations; his parents and siblings were also present and looked confused as well. Everywhere grew even more tense as every word he said kept on hitting back with an echo. But how did he find this paper I kept wondering to myself. “You didn't think about clearing your track perfectly when you accepted. I took your car to pick up the cake.” He gestured at me, shaking his head and turning to his mother's side. “It's not what you think” I fell on my knees; my eyes fell apart, my heart left my body on a marathon, my head swelled, and my mouth shivered. Who would pull me out of these sea-drowning shackles? At this point, I wished I told my mom about what happened earlier. My world was already crumbling on my shoulders, the weight was so heavy I couldn't feel my legs. “Remember I told you she wasn't worth it” He walked up to his mother with the paper, handing it over to her he laughed. “What is this” She asked with a flexibly shocked voice. Opening it gently the entire room could hear the pages flip open. “It's a medical result from the London Central Hospital.” At this point the silence in the room broke open as this time it changed to humming, “What could make him want to stop an entire engagement at this critical stage” My mom murmured. But the look on Liam's mother's face turned the attention towards her as she fell back to her seat. “This can't be happening” Liam's mother exclaimed with a faint voice. I couldn't speak as no right words could justify the fact on that paper. “Let me have a look”, my Mom requested; at this point, my jaw dropped wide, and I opened my eyes, allowing the streams of tears stored up to flush out uncontrollably. This wasn't how I intended to break the news of my rape, and bringing it out mow would only sound like a defense, and who would believe me now when I hid it all this while. Looking around I saw Victoria smiling, “Who invited her,” I thought to myself. But at this point that was the least of my worries. I threw my head to the floor, wishing I could go through the ground. Liam's face kept staring at his mom with the I told you so look, folding his lips as he went on to sit down, alone to the center stage, with all eyes on me. “What have you done Lila” My mom ran toward me shaking my entire body as she joined me in the ocean of tears, a moment no mother would be proud of. “I tried to talk to you, Mom. You didn't give ears just before Dad entered.” My voice breaking, I pushed every word out but couldn't get hold of myself. All attempts to vindicate me fell on the running tears on my Mom's face. Liam didn't actually feel embarrassed or disappointed. Instead, he kept on smiling as though he had gotten his vengeance on an action against me. I remember the last time we had a fight, he told me he was in all this entanglement because of the monetary gain and family bond it would create for the long-lasting merger. Could he have meant all of that? I kept asking myself but he apologized afterwards. My head kept spinning, maybe after all he saw this just like he said to be a distraction and now he has a valid reason to call this whole engagement off, this is not fair, I deserve to explain things out but no one was ready to listen as all eyes where fixed on the paper and it's content. Maybe I shouldn't have given him my car, maybe I should have told him about it when it happened, or maybe I should have told my mom all along; as for mom, her busy work schedule wouldn't even give us enough time, and it wasn't something for a phone conversation. Maybe she is even in pain that the merger wouldn't work. Turning left again, I saw the smile and winks from Victoria with her smile of accomplishment, “Could it be her doing that he found out about the medical report?.” I kept thinking as tears kept running down my face without bounds. “Why is everyone turning to a single paper and getting a mood swing?” My dad asked as he rushed also to take a look at the paper which now lay on the floor, Don't bother I'll save you the stress, Victoria punched the air with her flattering voice, looking confident as she adjusted her hair, robbing her belly. “She is pregnant”
