Chapter 9: The Point of No Return
Isabella’s heart hammered in her chest as Lorenzo’s words sank in. The room, once a symbol of luxury and control, now felt like a cage. She had hoped she could keep her distance, remain untouched by the world that had claimed her family, but now there was no denying it. She was in the web of the Mafia, and there was no escape.
"I’m not asking for your loyalty, Isabella," Lorenzo continued, his voice low, but his gaze intense. "But I am asking for your cooperation. Your uncle Domenico has been a thorn in my side for too long, and it’s time to settle things. But I’m not going to involve you in the violence, not unless I have to. I just need you to help me gain access to certain information."
Isabella’s mind raced. This was a game she never wanted to play, yet here she was, being dragged into it. She could feel her pulse quicken as she tried to process what he was saying. He wasn’t asking for her allegiance, but he was asking for something just as dangerous—her involvement.
"You want me to spy on my uncle?" she asked, her voice trembling despite her attempt to remain calm.
Lorenzo’s eyes flickered with something like approval. "I wouldn’t put it that bluntly, but yes. I need information on his operations—his plans, his alliances. You’re the perfect person to get close to him."
The words hit her like a punch to the gut. She had been raised to keep her distance from the criminal underworld. Her family had never forced her to get involved, and she’d made it clear that she wanted nothing to do with the violent world they inhabited. But now, Lorenzo was offering her a choice that didn’t feel like a choice at all.
"What if I refuse?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper. She asked with faer laced in her voice.
