…
The next morning I wake up to the smell of eggs and bacon as I head downstairs to see my parents both in the kitchen very quiet.
I walk up to them and sit at the table and pick up a fork.
Nadia: Morning mom. Morning dad.
Dad: Good morning Nadia honey, did you sleep well?
Nadia: Somewhat, I still can’t believe you guys are selling the house.
My mom exchange a look with my dad and that’s when I see my mom nearly cry for the first time.
Mom: Honey, we’re selling the house because we can’t afford it anymore.
I nearly drop my fork.
Nadia: What!? For how long? Why haven’t you called and asked for the money? I would’ve helped! Dad!
Dad: Sweetie the decision had already been made. I lost my job months ago and the price, is enough for me and your mom to finally retire.
Mom: Honey the paperwork has been filed and, I’m sorry, we need this.
I scoffed and slam my hand on the table as I slowly stood up.
Nadia: YOU guys? What about me!? I love this house! I love the memories we all made here! You can’t just sell something so priceless and expect me to be happy about it!
With that I stormed out with my coat as I went to browse the town, trying to cool off my red and angered face.
As I walked around the town I noticed that certain spots became more modernized, smart TV’s everywhere, a whole karaoke bar built that wasn’t here when I left, and a whole other amount of things.
But the one place that was still in the same spot and still running strong, the bakery, the same bakery I met my still best friend till this day Mya.
I walk in the shop and see her at the counter counting bills in her hands with a grim face but it completely shifts when she looks up and her entire face brightens up like the Fourth of July.
Mya: NADIA! Oh god you’re back! Hey girl I missed you!
Nadia: Hey My! Just back in town to apparently just enjoy my last moments here since not only is the Fesival not happening, my parents LIED to me about the house and they’re selling it!
Mya’s face goes pale as she waves me over and starts to whisper.
Mya: Nadia. Everyone here has been struggling. The big big company that runs the town? Yeah they cut their job market, so barely anyone has been getting by, most people have work from home jobs for overseas companies, but it’s never enough, the WHOLE town’s struggling girl.
With that I calm down because hearing all of that, was not what I expected to hear. All this time my whole town has been in the dumps because their main source of income turned them away and now barely anyone has enough to even put bread on the table.
I look at Mya and clench my hands.
Nadia: Mya, get your old spy stuff, we’re saving Christmas.
