CHAPTER FIFTY Rey focused on the mac nuts and I returned to the batter, feigning nonchalance as Slim and Jack stepped from the galley. As soon as they were gone from view, we sprang into action. I removed the rifle from its casing and found it hadn’t yet been loaded. “Damn.” I crammed it back in and returned it to its resting place. Rey’s expression changed from hopeful and determined to thoughtful and worried as I grabbed the knife from behind the cutting board and tucked it into the front of my jeans—and sliced myself.
