Chapter 18

            “Darling. Mei Ling texted me to inform that you are not ok today. What’s wrong? I came here as soon as possible after my work.” Adam was gazing into my eyes while holding my hands.

            “Your mum came to see me today.” I told Adam quietly.

            “What? What did she say?” Adam was fidgeting. He was nervous.

            “She offered 5 million to me to break up with you.” I replied.

            “What? Did you accept?” Adam was surprised.

            “I am Erica Spencer. Do you think I will accept it?” I was furious to think he doubted me.

            “Wow darling. I am so proud of you.” Adam was relieved.

            “But she also told me that you are the one responsible for my father’s death. I can’t believe she make up such story to break us apart. My father passed away in a car accident.” I told Adam. Adam was hanging his head and completely silence.

            “What? She was right about this?” I asked Adam upon seeing his reaction.

            “Oh… Darling. I have no idea how to explain this.” Adam told as he was dejected.

            “So, you mean what she said was true?” I asked Adam, feeing confused. Adam was in completely silence. I was shocked he didn’t deny it.

            “I was so silly to be with the murderer of my father!” I cried; I was so furious. He was just toying with my feelings.

            “I am sorry darling….” Adam apologized but before he could finish his sentence I abruptly said “Please leave my room now. I never want to see you again.” I opened the bathroom door and asked him to leave.

            “I will explain to you one day when you are calm.” Adam said as he walked to the bathroom door.

            “There isn’t a need to see you again. This is the end of our relationship.” I said to Adam. Adam closed the door behind; I could feel his sorrow as he left.

            I can’t believe that I was with the murderer of my father. How did he murder my father? He died in a car accident and I was there when the accident happened. It is so bizarre that Adam was related to the car accident. Adam was 15 years old then, he can’t drive. Did he drove without a license? I couldn’t sleep that night thinking of the possibilities. Crying out so badly on my pillow. Lucky Mei Ling is unaware any of these, she usually sleeps like a log.

 “Good morning dear.” Mei Ling greeted me. I smiled in return.

“Are you alright? Your eyes are so swollen.” Mei ling asked, she was concerned. My eyes were so swollen due to crying last night.

“I am alright. I didn’t sleep well last night.” I returned with a smile to brush off any more questions by Mei Ling. I can’t share anything about Adam to her. How to explain all these to her. We get ready to go to the campus. Mei Ling was very attentive to me. She knew something was wrong with me.

Derrek and Adam were waiting at the entrance of the campus when we arrived. The sight of Adam pained my heart. I ignored Adam; I couldn’t believe he hid the truth from me. Revenge was in my mind. He must have noticed my father’s photo when he came to my house that day to deliver my luggage. I was so silly that I didn’t notice then.   

I went to the cafeteria for lunch as Mei Ling went to the Library to return some books. It was good to be alone so I could straighten out my mind. I couldn’t even focus in classes as my mind has ran wild.

“Hey Rica.” Derrek greeted me but I just smiled in return.

“Hi Derrek. I know you are here to put some good words for Adam. Please don’t say a word about him.” I warned him, glaring at him.

“Yeah. He is my best friend since childhood. It is so sad to see him in such state.” Derrek explained.

“Yeah. If you value our friendship, then just don’t mention his name.” I warned Derrek.

“Okay. Maybe I should tell you a story about a father’s love for his daughter.” Derrek continued. I looked at him waiting to hear his story.

“20 years ago, there was a grim reaper who fell in love with a human. He decided to convert to be a human so he could be with her. He jumped down from 30th storeys and when he landed on the ground, he was hurt and bleeding. This was a sign that he is converted to be a human.” I listened carefully and Derrek continued. “They got married and they have a lovely daughter together. But their bliss is short-lived, it lasted for only 12 years when the father and daughter met an accident. A young grim reaper got his first job for this collection and he supposed to collect the daughter’s soul. The father however being an ex-grim reaper was able to see the young Grim Reaper. He begged the young Grim Reaper to collect his soul instead of his daughter’s soul.”

Tears rolling down from my cheeks as I listened. “The Grim Reaper collected your father’s soul instead of your soul.” Derrek explained with sympathy in his eyes.

“And the young Grim Reaper was Adam?” I asked with sobs in between, choking back tears . Derrek nodded his head.

“Adam was determined to find you again, and so he did when he met you at the club. He told me there was some connections between you both. That’s why he let you live during the car accident.” Derrek explained.

“But that’s not what I want. My mum was in depression for years.” I sobbed.

“Mr. Spencer told Adam that your mum will not be able to continue living if living is without you.” Derrek explained.

“How do you determine whose soul to collect?” I asked Derrek.

“Well. We have a death record book with name, date, location and time on it. Sometimes we have to deal with dark souls, and it will be difficult. There are many wondering souls roam around the world.” Derrek explained.

“But why my father’s soul can replace my soul instead? This is not right! That is not what I want!” I exclaimed.

“Adam had his own punishment from the Almighty Court because of this. But what is done cannot be undone.” Derrek explained.

“What kind of punishment he received?” I asked Derrek.

“His life was shortened by 30 years.” Derrek replied.

Derrek bid his goodbye and left the cafeteria in hurry, leaving me in daze. I need to re-consider what had happened. Adam had saved my life twice.
