“Yes, you are getting married,” my mum said.
“Getting married?” I asked again with my mouth open.
“Why? Why am I getting married? Mum, are you joking?” I asked as I picked up the envelope from the bed.
“I’m not a comedian, Aria. Bring the documents to me when you are done signing them,” she said as she walked towards the door.
“Mum, I can’t do this,” I said.
“Well, you will,” she said as she opened the door and left.
I watched her leave in shock. Marriage? Why? I was confused, and I didn’t know what to do or say at the moment. But I knew for sure that I was going back to her this evening. I demand an explanation.
All day at work, I kept thinking about what my mum said this morning. She had called me out of the blue and told me that I was getting married in seven days. And I couldn't believe what I was hearing. It was still sounding funny to me, but I knew she wasn't joking.
I couldn't help but wonder how long she had been planning this for. It was all too much to handle, especially since Derek, my ex-boyfriend, had just died. I was still grieving and the news of my unexpected wedding had made me feel even more overwhelmed.
After a long day at work, I finally arrived home and headed straight to my room. As soon as I arrived, I took a long hot shower to help me relax. After I was done, I felt refreshed and ready to see my mom. I headed down to the sitting room where I found her watching her favorite tv show.
My mom shifted in her seat and said,
“You have until tomorrow morning to sign the contract file I gave to you.”
I was taken aback by her sudden announcement and replied,
“Wait, Mum, do you expect me to sign something I don't know anything about?”
She looked at me sternly and said, “You don't need to know anything. You know I always want the best for you.”
I was shocked by her response. “What? I'm getting married to a total stranger and you don't want me to worry? Common Mom, this isn't right.”
She tried to fake a smile and said, “Well, you haven't said it's wrong.”
I was furious and asked, “Oh my God, Mom! Does Daddy know about this?”
She replied, “Yes, and he's in support.”
I couldn't believe what I was hearing and started crying.
“Why are you people doing this to me? Derek just died, Mom. He just died.” I felt a deep sense of sadness and loss as I thought about my late fiancé.
"So what are we supposed to do? Keep waiting for him?" she said in a harsh tone. I was taken aback by her tone and shouted, "Mom!!"
"He is from one of the wealthiest and strongest families in the whole country. He is the best for you, and that is final," she said.
I felt a deep sense of frustration and helplessness as I thought about my mother's words. How could she expect me to just marry a man I barely knew?
Hearing this, I was devastated. I would be marrying someone I had never met before in just six days. For me,Marriage is a big thing and my mum is making it harder. Feeling shattered, I ran towards the door, desperate to escape the situation.
“And where do you think you're going?" my mum asked loudly
"Anywhere... anywhere mum, except this place," I replied, my voice shaking with emotion.
As I opened the door and ran towards the gate, I could hear my mum calling my name loudly, but I didn't stop. I needed time to think, time to process what was happening.
I tried calling my best friend Amy, but there was no response. I stopped calling after trying several times, and I continued walking. My mind drifted back to Derek, and I thought about the things we would have done if he was still alive. We had so many plans, so many dreams, and now they were all gone. I felt a deep sense of sadness and loss, and I wondered how I would ever be able to move on from this.
My thoughts were interrupted by a car horn. "Young lady, do you have a death wish?" he shouted.
I quickly ran from the road to the other side, my heart racing. I saw a bench across me and sat on it, trying to calm down.
Suddenly, the rain began to drizzle, and before I could think of where or what to do, it began to rain heavily. I sat there, drenched in the rain, feeling more alone than ever.
I thought about Derek and how he would have laughed at me for getting caught in the rain like this. I wondered what he would have said to me if he was here. Would he have comforted me, or would he have told me to stop feeling sorry for myself? The rain continued to pour down, and I sat there, lost in thought.
A man dressed in a black suite was walking towards me. His blue eyes were full of mystery, and his black hair was tousled to the back. Even in the rain, he walked with charisma. I couldn't see his face well at first, but as he approached me, I got a clearer view of his very handsome face.
He had a strong jawline, high cheekbones, and a straight nose. He looked directly into my eyes as he approached me, his eyes not leaving mine. I felt my heart skip a beat as he got closer, and I wondered who he was and why he was walking towards me.
He stopped in front of me and held my hand, pulling me to stand up. I hesitated to go with him, feeling unsure about who he was. He noticed my hesitation and didn't say a word as he picked me up and carried me in his arms.
I was shocked and didn't know what to do as he carried me through the rain. I could feel his strong arms around me, and I wondered who he was and why he was doing this. I felt safe but also uneasy, not knowing where he was taking me.
He carried me inside a black car which was parked across the street. I sat there looking at this stranger, a handsome stranger at that.
"Where are you headed to?" he asked, breaking the silence.
I didn’t respond
“You don't have a house?" he asked, looking at me with a curious expression.
“I do," I replied in a low voice, feeling nervous and unsure about what was happening.
My phone rang loudly, interrupting the silence. It was my mum calling. "And you won't pick your call too?" he asked again, looking at me with a raised eyebrow.
“No, I don't want to," I said, feeling a bit annoyed by his questions.
Immediately, he came down from the back door and opened the door to the driver's seat and started driving. I wanted to ask where he was taking me, but for some reason unknown to me, I felt safe with this stranger. In the car, my mind was at peace, and I forgot about the wedding, my mum, and Derek's death.
We got to a familiar gate, and he entered. It was Paradise Hills, one of the biggest guest houses in the city. He stopped the car and opened the seat.
"Can you walk?" he asked, looking into my eyes.
"Yes," I said, shivering.
He removed his suit jacket and placed it on my shoulders. As we walked through the doors of this suite, his presence commanded respect and attention, and I could feel eyes on me. I looked at myself in a mirror along the hallway.
“No way," I said loudly. He stopped in his tracks and looked at me.
“Nothing," I said, and we continued walking towards a room. "I couldn't believe I was dressed in a pajamas from my house. I looked homeless."
My thoughts were interrupted when he opened the door to a room. It was one of the biggest rooms in the suite, with two separate beds and a wide variety of special designs.
"You can stay here, deciding if you want to go home or not," he said as he turned to leave. I held his hand immediately, and he stopped and looked at me.
"What is your name?" I asked, my eyes never leaving his. He traced his eyes to my hand and back to my face. I let go of his hand immediately and moved back, feeling a bit embarrassed.
"Xavier," he said. "I will be back," he added, and left the room, closing the door behind him.
I texted my mother, telling her that I was fine and that I wouldn't be coming home. Some minutes later, I heard a knock on the door, and I opened it to find a man who handed me a bag before leaving. I wondered what was in the bag and decided to open it.
Inside the bag were another nightwear and a gown to change into. "What a thoughtful man," I said, smiling, and walked towards the bathroom.
In the bathroom, various thoughts came into my mind. Who is this man? What does he want? Then I remembered the marriage.
I had to sign it even though I didn't want to. I looked at myself in the mirror, wondering what my life would be like from now on. I had been so focused on other things that I had never really thought about getting married.
As I came outside, I saw Xavier lying with his eyes closed on the bed across from me, with another cloth draped over his body. I went closer to him, curious and looking at his face. He had a scar behind his ear, making wonder what kind of person he was. I felt drawn to him, and I was about to touch him when he held my hands, making me stumble directly into his chest, looking directly into his deep blue eyes.
