Chapter 007

1033 Words
As we reached the house, I observed, as the driver, the car to park among the other vehicles in the building. While I was stepping out of the car, he received a phone call, and it seemed like something important had occurred, requiring his immediate attention. “Is he going back?” I wondered, watching him drive out of the building as I entered the house. There was nobody inside, and the sound of my footsteps echoed through the empty house. I headed straight to my room, but to my surprise, it was locked. “Who could have locked it?” I asked myself, feeling confused. As I stood there, I decided to check my Mom's room to confirm if it was also locked. I moved towards my mom's room, opened the door, and it flew open. “Great,” I exclaimed as I walked in and sat on the chair beside the window. “What could have gone wrong? Who could it be?” I pondered, lost in my thoughts. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door, interrupting my train of thought. I shivered in fear, my heart pounding, as the bang on the door became louder. The person outside desperately tried to force it open, but the door still didn’t open. My eyes quickly moved around the room, hoping to find any object that could serve as a means of self-defense. I spotted a shiny table knife I forgot on the wooden surface of the table. It caught my eye, reminding me of when I used it to tear open a cardboard box a few days ago. I swiftly picked it up, and I felt the cool metal against my palm. With cautious steps, I made my way towards the door, my heart pounding in my chest. “Who's there?” I whispered, my voice trembling with fear. The silence that followed was deafening, leaving me on edge. The banging on the door stopped, replaced by the faint sound of footsteps as the person walked away. As I walked towards the bed to sit back down, the lights suddenly went out, causing me to stop in my tracks. Everything became covered in total darkness, and the silence made it incredibly eerie. I could faintly hear footsteps echoing from a distance, but I couldn't see anything or even utter a word, as I was afraid of being discovered by whoever had been banging on the door earlier. I cautiously tried to retrace my steps, hoping to find my way back to the bed and sit down. With careful steps, I made my way towards the bed, reaching out my hand to grasp anything I could find. Finally, I accidentally kicked the bed frame, providing me with a direction to face. I settled down on the bed, my mind filled with unanswered questions. “What is happening? Who was at the door? And why did they leave without saying anything? Am I still in danger here?” Lost in my thoughts, the jingling of keys pierced the air, causing my heart to skip a beat. The sound grew louder, signaling that someone was unlocking the door. Panic gripped me, and without hesitation, I went under the bed to hide. The door creaked open, and I strained my ears to catch any clue about who it was. But I couldn't see anything. The person came inside and went out almost immediately, leaving the door open. I was still holding on to the table knife, my only hope for defense. Luckily, the light came back on, and everything became visible. I heard the footsteps approaching again, and the person entered. I peeped to check who it was, and to my surprise, it was Emily, our trusted maid, who entered the room. Confusion mingled with relief as I watched her move towards the wardrobe. Without hesitation, she brought out a different key from her pocket and effortlessly unlocked the drawer. “How did she get Mom’s key?” I wondered. As she brought out the file, I stayed hidden beneath the bed, silently observing Emily's every move. With caution, she reached into the drawer and extracted the mysterious file. I watched as she carefully scanned through its contents, checking for completeness. She returned the files to the drawer and locked it securely. My heart raced as she approached the back of the room, drawing closer to where I was hiding. I noticed her unwavering gaze fixed on a concealed spot near the window. She confidently moved towards the window and retrieved an object that looked like a flash drive, carefully tucked away in a corner. She then replaced it with another flash drive from her pocket. “What is happening here?” I wondered, taken aback by everything I’m seeing. She sat on a chair adjacent to me, pulled out her phone, and quickly snapped photos of the pages from a small file she brought out from her apron. She carefully selected a few pages to take with her and returned the remaining ones to the same drawer she kept the other ones. As she left the room, she made sure to lock the door, and I could faintly hear her footsteps gradually fading away. A few minutes later, I came out from my hiding spot under the bed and approached the door to lock it from the inside. I made my way to the wardrobe, I realized the wardrobe was locked. I began to search around for the key, I knew my mom was never the type to take something as small as a drawer key everywhere. Suddenly, I heard a loud knock on the door, this time louder than the first, causing me to freeze in place. “Aria, are you in there?” Amy's voice echoed through the room. I quickly closed the drawer, snatched the flash drive from the window as I might not be able to take it later. I ran towards the door and with trembling hands, I turned the doorknob, and as the door swung open, my eyes widened in shock, my mouth hanging open in disbelief. The sight before me was beyond anything I could have imagined.
