“I hope you’re both hungry,” I said, adding some amusement to my tone. But neither looked amused when I turned their way. However, they both had that fake-ass ‘everything is fine’ smile on their faces. Grandfather’s was practiced, while Mary’s was more disturbing, but they both had originated from the same uneasiness.
“Starving.” Grandfather spoke through his teeth and it was only then that I noted the rage bubbling underneath.
He was pissed? Yes, I had been neglectful to tell him about Mary, but not because I thought he wouldn’t approve of her as a “companion”. He couldn’t have known she had initially been a target just by looking at her, could he?
