Chapter 9 Class Reunion

1102 Words
Damn it! Copley Hotel again? When Norman saw the dinner address Rachel had sent him, he regretted saying yes. When he thought of the hotel, he couldn't help but think of the picture of himself running naked in only one underpants and being photographed. Alas! What a shame. Norman wanted to dress up before he went, but he wasn't in the mood to do it. Rachel arrived early at the door of the Copley Hotel. She had never looked forward to the reunion like she did today. A girl would doll herself up for someone she loved. Rachel was already gorgeous, but today she went out of her way to dress up. She was wearing a pure white ladylike dress and shimmering high heels. Her long, shiny blond hair, which fell freely over her shoulders, added to her purity and beauty. Instead of entering, Rachel waited for Norman at the door. To pretend that the encounter was unintentional, she walked up and down the same road leading to the hotel door over and over again. Finally, she saw the long-awaited figure, from far and near. "Norman!" Rachel greeted him and walked in his direction. Coincidentally, Norman was also wearing a little white tuxedo. At first glance, they appeared to be wearing matching outfits. "What a coincidence. Have you just arrived?" Norman asked her. "Yes! Let's go." "Okay!" The two entered a room of the hotel. A number of students were already waiting in the private room. Looking at the two people in the door, they were curious and surprised! Perfect Match was coined to describe them! "You were together?" A classmate looked up and down these two people's clothes, asked playfully. "Really? Who made the first move?" "No! I didn't realize how close you two were in high school!" There was a heated discussion, and everyone gathered around, looking at Norman and Rachel with curious eyes. Rachel blushed. She was enjoying herself and didn't want to actively clear up the misunderstanding. Norman, however, was different. He owed Rachel a favor for the ward. And now, because of him, Rachel was misunderstood by her old classmates, which he found guilty. "Hey, guys. You've got it wrong. We just encounter at the door. "Oh, that's a pity. You make a good couple." Some people lost the spirit of heckling, while others did not give up. "It doesn't mean it won't be the future, right?" Rachel was in a depressed mood right now. When she saw Norman trying to explain, she was just thinking about what was wrong with her. She grew up with a sense of superiority over ordinary children: family wealth, appearance, academic performance. But she failed to capture Norman's heart. "Wow! Long time no see, Norman. What brings you here?" Carl, their monitor, walked in, grinning. He was jealous of Norman because he was supposed to be the focus of the class. "I haven't seen you for a long time. I miss you so much." The truth was, Carl never told Norman about the party. "Come on. Now that everyone is here, let's take your seats. " Carl asked everyone to sit down. All the girls wanted to sit next to Norman and looked at him. The boys were secretly angry. In the past, when Norman did not come, everyone shared the attention equally. Today, with Norman here, other boys in the class became invisible. Once everyone was seated, Norman decided to make a toast. He thought to himself that it was the first time he had been to such an occasion. He filled his glass and raised it. "Today is my first time to attend the class reunion. I haven't seen you for a long time. I propose a toast." Norman said that, and the girls immediately responded, all finishing their glasses. But the boys didn't budge. "Why don't you drink it? " Rachel tried to help him out. The boys really disliked Norman and embarrassed him coincidentally. "I'm sorry, Norman. I have to drive later. I can't drink." Carl took out his car keys and shook them on the table. "Carl! You're doing well! " As soon as he pulled out his car keys, a female classmate accosted him. "Just so-so!" Carl smiled. Good looks were important, but good fortune mattered most. How realistic! With Carl as an example, everyone started showing off their luxury villas, yachts, cars, and watches. A reunion of students suddenly became a showcase of their wealth. Norman stood there with his glass in his hand, wondering whether he should drink. "Norman, how did you get here? You didn't walk here, did you?" There were several naughty children in every class. The one who speaks spoke was one of them. Norman was perplexed. This guy made it clear it was all about him. "I took a cab," Norman said. "Norman, you're not out of money for a car, are you? Why don't you come to work in my company and I'll give you more money." "Suggested a rich boy. His father set up a company for him when he had just graduated from college. "Why would Norman come to your company? He can live on his face." "That’s right. Norman, it's better for you to be a kept man." A boy sitting next to Norman said gravely, patting Norman on the shoulder. "Norman, your family runs a business, right?" Rachel tried to get out of the way. Rachel had a crush on Norman back in high school. She did a lot of research on him back then. As far as she could tell, Norman's family was well off. She didn't want the man of her dreams to be bullied like this. But, after all these years, Rachel's information had long since lapsed. Norman’s family was now on a low ebb. His job would soon be in jeopardy. He had nothing left to show off. Maybe Emma was the only thing he's got left. Wait, why was he thinking about that woman again? She was not even his girlfriend. He had no right to show off her. Norman shook the vision of Emma out of his head.     He knew Rachel was defending him, but talking about it now only made him look worse. "Well, my family's business is not doing very well." "Never mind, Norman, I can support you!" One of the girls sensed an opportunity and rushed to tell Norman what she wanted. "Are you the only one who can support him? So can I." Another rich female student, who had long coveted Norman's beauty, did not want to give in either.
