Chapter 11

1062 Words
Cain's POV "No one, absolutely no one,"she answered to the little boy's voice, her hands on the door ready to slam it shut on my face.. This was gonna be harder than expected. She stood there her eyes boring into mine like tiny pieces of sharp glass. This was the first time seeing Millers dressed casually like a normal person does! Her hands in the pockets of her blue faded jeans, her woolen maroon sweater hugging her body perfectly and her hair tied up in a messy bun. "Um... Millers, can we...." Before the words escaped from my lips she had already begun to shut me up. "Lemme stop you right there!See there's nothing to talk about, you already made it clear that I was FIRED! It's so easy for you to discard people like trash, simply because you have money, isn't it? Never thinking about the families that maybe destroyed by your rash yet irrational decisions, huh? So for the little respect I still have for you, please leave and never show your face here again!,"she slammed the door, leaving me utterly shocked. For the first time, I lacked words to say, did she just shush me? Forget it, coming here was a mistake! Rash she said... Irrational decisions she said! Discard people like trash? ********************* Next day I went through the different designs that were to be presented in the next board meeting. These architects weren't doing their work, right!! Same designs, simple and unrealistic, they didn't quite bring out the image our company had sustained for the last couple of years! "Sir, there's someone here to see you," she said ushering someone inside my office. He looked at me, his eyes scanning the office a bit before he hung his coat and walked over to one of the seats near my desk. "Well, looks like you're not so excited to see me, nephew," he exclaimed. His visit was unexpected.... Benson Flores Powers one of the most intimidating men in our family. Known for his honest, shrewd and scrupulous attributes that saw him rise from an ordinary accountant to to the now immensely rich man that he was. He was more like a father figure, helping me overcome my scandalous youth, saw me at my lowest and was quick to help me up. Of course pulling my chair aside I reached for one of his usual lingering hugs. Well the man still had some energy left as he gripped my shoulder towards him. "Uncle!!It's always a pleasure. What brings you here?" I asked parting from the hug and going back to my seat. "What? Can't I check in on you and the company?"he asked comfortably settling himself on the chair his hand on my desk. "It's not that. You could have called,"I said noticing his attention had shifted to the metal cabinet, then to me. "Aah, I don't need an appointment to see my nephew. By the way, where's Emma? Haven't seen her around?" Of course he had to ask, I bet that's the reason he came ...to check in on her...well news flash, I fired that damn woman!! "Ooooh Millers. She's on leave, uncle. Yeah, family issues I guess,"I lied, he wriggled his moustache a little bit, eyeing me suspiciously like he did when I was a teen, before he reluctantly chuckled and said,"Well it's a good thing she's on leave, for a moment there I thought my eyes needed check up, I just saw a waitress in the coffee shop across the street that looked like her," Obviously, he did. Lying was pointless now, it was clear he knew what went on or did he? "Tell me the truth, buster! You had to fire her, didn't you?"he asked his expression changing to a more serious one. "Uncle, I fired her with a good cause. You know she and Alexander..back ...in New Zealand..," I stuttered. Trying to justify myself would only make things worse, Uncle Ben already knew about my past, about Alexander, about Julia..... "Cain? Alexander again? Everything that happened between you two, it's in the past. Move on, make amends." "I have tried, uncle but every time I see him, everything comes back. You better than anyone should understand me,"I said trying to block everything that happened in the past from rushing in. What Alex did to me, was unforgivable; he and Julia played me for a fool.... "I don't know how Emma got dragged into your feud with that man but I want her back, she's a major asset to this company. Beg her if you have to, but I want her here!," he said his finger now jabbed on my table as if to put his point across. "I already begged her to come but she slammed the door on my face, uncle,"I said nonchalantly. "Cut the act, nephew! I know you better, did you actually beg her or you just pulling my frail legs?" Oh I never intended to beg, I don't kneel down to anyone. She saved me the trouble, with her pointless lecture, there's no way I would show my face to that rowdy place she calls home. "I intended to beg but she didn't hear me out and perhaps she's not the last person on earth, I could hire another secretary!" "Mm how's that gone so far?Have you found one yet? Bring Emma Millers back or else I'll have to call your cousin all the way from Cebu to represent me in the board,"he warned. Another piece of work! Cornelius Powers, rebellious and hard headed, thanks God he was in the Philippines! He and I never got along since childhood, let's say he was the playful type and well I was the obedient and responsible kid...you get the picture. Now here was uncle, threatening me that i would have to work with him, playful Nel, if I didn't get Millers back! I guess it's back to Millers' home once again!
