CHAPTER 8 Brenda POV. It was past 10 pm and Lucian wasn’t back yet. My eyes were fixed on the door for a while but the door was still shut tightly. “It could be that he’s busy,” I shrugged it off and was about to walk upstairs when the door opened and Lucian walked in looking very exhausted. “Hey,” He flashed me a very wide smile, trying to hide his exhaustion. “Hi, welcome back,” I said flatly, without an expression on my face. “I’m sorry, Did I keep you waiting?” He asked me, and I shook my head vehemently. “No, you don’t have to apologize. You didn’t keep me waiting,” I said sincerely, but he narrowed his brows suspiciously. He must have thought I was lying, but that was the truth. “Welcome back,” I said this time around with a forced smile as I walked upstairs when his next words made me half abruptly. “Do you mind coming to work with me henceforth? So I don’t have to leave you alone at home,” He suggested, and I turned around to take a glance at his face. I was hoping I’d find something to do, and this opportunity was the perfect one for anyone in this situation. It was going to help me feel a lot better. “Yes, sure. Thank you,” I flashed him a genuine smile and continued. “Starting from tomorrow?” “Yes,” He said and I nodded in approval. I smiled and walked upstairs, toward my room. A wide smile was seen playing across my lips as I was excited. I went straight to my closet and looked for a corporate dress I could wear to the company with Lucien the next day, but I saw nothing of that sort. The only one I felt was good enough was a crop top and jeans with sneakers. “Not bad,” I muttered, whilst I took a closer look at the clothes. After arranging everything that I’d be needing the next day, I went to freshen up and came out feeling so exhausted. I laid on the bed and before I knew it, darkness enveloped me. I was fast asleep when my phone rang loudly, jolting me awake with a shock. My eyes were still closed when I picked up the call and placed the phone on my ear but the voice I heard made me freeze in shock. It was the last person I was expecting! “So you finally decided to pick up, huh?” He asked, but I wasn’t having it. I wanted to be sure, so I removed the phone from my ear and glanced at the caller ID, and to my amazement, it was Gary. “Why did you call?” I asked coldly, not giving him a reason to feel like I was shocked or happy to see his call. “Is what I heard true?” He asked, and a sly smile appeared on my lips. I knew that he was talking about my marriage to Lucien, but I wasn’t going to make it easy for him either. “What was it you heard, Mister?” I asked, furrowing my brows as I sat upright. At this time, the sleep has already cleared from my eyes. “That you got married to my uncle, Is that true?” He asked and I hummed making him bang the table angrily. “It shouldn’t bother you, Gary,” I said coldly, but he went mute. “Don’t ever call me by this time again Gary, you should know that I’m now a married woman so there should be limits,” I said to him before I went ahead to end the call. A light smile crept on my lips, as I felt fulfilled. It was nice to finally treat him this way, and I decided within myself to do more if he tried to cross my paths again. With that, I went ahead to sleep with a smile on my face. The next morning, I woke up quickly and prepared myself before I slipped into the jeans and the crop top. I packed my hair into a messy bun before wearing the sneakers to match. That was it, and I took another look at myself in the mirror and I smiled in satisfaction. I picked up my phone and walked out of the room, heading downstairs but my awestruck when I saw Lucien dressed up already, going through his computer on dining. “Good morning pretty,” He looked up with a slight smile, and it widened the moment he saw me. “Good morning,” I said, playing with my fingers as I felt intimidated by my clothes. “Errm, I’m sorry I dressed up like this but I just found out that I don’t have a corporate dress,” I paused, and when I saw that he was listening, I continued. “You can go, while I go get some corporate dress so I’d meet you in the company,” I said but he simply chucked. “You have an idea of the corporate dresses you want to get?” He asked, and I nodded. “Yes, I have the pictures on my phone,” I said, and he muttered something that sounded like, “That settles it,” “We’ll go to the company together, just send me the pictures of the dresses you want and I’ll have someone get them for you,” He said, before going ahead to dial a number on his phone. “I want you to get me some female dresses,” I said and he went ahead to tell the person that he’d send the pictures of the dress. His gesture was nice, but it felt surreal because it was the first time someone acted like I mattered. “Send me the pictures,” He said, and I did it instantly. He typed furiously on his phone for a while before he faced me with a light smile and said, “Done,” “Thank you,” I muttered, and he chuckled. “Let’s go, by the way, you look beautiful,” He muttered in my ear the moment he brushed past me. It was my turn to smile. The driver drove quickly and before we knew it, we got to the company but to my shock. The rumors and whispers I heard the moment I got to Lucien’s company. “What’s Lucien doing with this b***h?” This was the last comment that got to me, as I turned around—my eyes blazing with fury.
