Chapter 1
"Lian… where are you going?" a woman’s voice sounded just as Lian was about to pull open their front door.
Kylian looked around when he heard his mother’s voice asking him.
He halted in his tracks and faced his mother. "I'm going to play basketball with my friends."
"Didn't I tell you to pick up your sister from her friend's house?" she reminded him, her voice laced with slight anger.
It was more than enough to make Lian anxious. He knew he was in trouble.
"Oh…shit," he cursed after he remembered that his twin sister was still waiting for him to fetch her. He had completely forgotten about it.
On the other hand, his friends were waiting for him as well because he promised them that they were going to play basketball. It was the only time he had to play and bond with his friends, leaving him in a dilemma.
Sighing with defeat, he asked his mother, "What time should I pick her up?"
He asked, thinking of a way if he could still go to his game afterward or not, as the house of Daisy’s friend was far from their house.
His mother looked at the wall clock in their living room before replying to him, “Within half an hour, you need to arrive there and fetch her. Any later, she will likely take a taxi and go on her own.”
He knew his sister well. She's a stubborn brat. They repeatedly told her to always wait for someone to fetch her or something. He didn’t like her taking a taxi on her own because he found it dangerous.
Lian always worried about his sister, so he couldn’t believe that he had actually forgotten that it was his duty today to fetch her.
He took a deep breath and hurriedly bid goodbye to his mother.
"Alright, Mom, I'm going to pick her up now."
"Good, take care and drive safely."
He took his phone from his pocket and called his best friend, Marco, to inform him that he would not be able to make it today since he needed to pick up his sister.
Daisy couldn’t drive because of the accident that happened to her when she was taking her driver's license. Since that day, Daisy has had a phobia and couldn’t hold a steering wheel.
After a few rings, the call finally connected.
"Hello…"
"Hello, bro. I'm sorry, I don’t think I’ll be able to make it to today’s game," he immediately apologized. He felt guilty, but his sister was more important than a game.
"Not again! It's been two weekends since we haven't played with you,” Marco replied. The hint of disappointment in Marco’s voice was evident that Lian felt more guilty.
Lian leaned on the doorframe of their house with one hand in his pocket and took a deep breath. "I'm sorry, bro. I need to go and pick up Daisy at her friend's house," he tried to explain.
"Why don't you bring Daisy with you here after you pick her up," Marco immediately suggested.
His friend's suggestions were a good idea. He could only wish, though, that his sister would agree to come with him. After all, she hated basketball, and he wouldn’t force her to come just so he could play.
"Come on, bro, Chelsa is here,'' Marco persuaded me even more.
After hearing Chelsa's name, he suddenly felt excited. It seemed like the world stopped.
Marco succeeded. He became more motivated to come to the game.
"Alright, I'll update you." With that, he hopped in his car and drove away.
It didn't take long before he arrived at the house of Daisy’s best friend. He was about to dial his sister's number when he saw his sister coming out of the door. She was wearing a nice blue-gray ¾ blouse paired with white jeans and a sneaker.
"Hello, bro," she greeted Loan with a smile and a wave as she came out of the porch with her backpack hanging on her right shoulder only.
"Hi, sis, come on, we're going to the gym," Lian called out rather than asking.
Daisy’s forehead furrowed in confusion, and asked, "Gym?"
"Yes, my friends are waiting for me," Lian nodded and opened the passenger door for her as he replied to her.
As expected, Daisy’s nose wrinkled in distaste, and she immediately shook her head. "I better take a taxi. I don't want to go to the gym."
"What? I drove from the house to here for half an hour, and you just want to take a taxi?" Lian asked with a hint of irritation in his voice.
Daisy’s eyes narrowed at her brother’s note. She crossed her arms on her chest and spoke in a stern voice, "Yes, what's wrong with taking a taxi? Besides, who told you to come and pick me up? Where's Uncle Mario?"
"It was Mom who told me to pick you up. Uncle Mario is with Dad," Lian explained to her in a gentler voice.
Knowing that Lian wouldn’t let her take the taxi, she gave in and went into the car’s passenger seat. She threw her back in the backseat and waited for him to get in the driver’s seat.
Once he wore his seatbelt, Daisy looked at him.
"I don't want to go to the gym, that's it…" Daisy said firmly, giving no chance for him to negotiate, and looked outside of the car window.
"I hate you…" he burst out to his sister before he drove the car heading home.
Silence surrounded the two of them throughout the drive. Even though Lian said that he hated Daisy, it wasn’t known anymore, and they wouldn’t engrave scars on each other’s hearts.
Daisy would just laugh at him at those words and smile, knowing that she had won the argument between the two of them. Well, at least that’s her usual reaction.
Seeing that Daisy kept quiet, he couldn’t help but feel anxious and bothered while he gave her side glances every now and then while driving.
