Chapter 1
It's been 4 years now since I visited the dentist. The awful memories of sharp metal tools and pointy needles still linger in my head. The sound of the rubber gloves and the way the dentist hides behind the face mask still haunts me today. I've never liked the dentist, since I was a little girl. I'm now 19 and can't stand the thought of even going near the place. I've recently moved away from my parents home and am now living on my own in a small terraced house on a noisy town street. It's not the greatest place to be but it's what I call home. I never had a good relationship with my parents, and they never seemed to like me. Perhaps that's the reason I use to visit the most horrible dentist there must have ever been. Dr Hershley. Even his name sends shivers down my spine. I feel as if he enjoyed stabbing gums with the sharp metal tools and found pleasure in jabbing pointy needles into the sides of people's mouths. I used to leave the room with blood gushing from my gums. He never even gave me a tissue to clean myself up! He was the most horrible man ever. I told myself I'd never revisit the dentist, especially after the traumatic events that used to take place at my old dentist. However the inside of my mouth had been aching for a couple of days now and it was really getting to me. I've never been confident with my teeth. I know for a fact they're not as clean as they should be, but I blame Dr Hershley for that. He never taught me how to floss or gave me a good cleaning. My teeth were also very wonky too. My parents didn't allow me to have braces when I was younger, they couldn't afford them. I was often bullied about how my teeth looked, but there was nothing I could do about it. Although I'm now older, I'm not sure how easy it will be for this fear to vanish from my mind. I needed to visit the dentist, fast. Yet, I just couldn't find the courage! A few hours passed by and my mouth was beginning to hurt too much. There was a dental practice located just down town so I used all my might to enter their phone number into my mobile device and tapped 'call'. A friendly voice answered the phone. "Hello! Thank you for calling Waveroad dental practice, how can I assist you today?" I tried to keep cool and relaxed, although my emotions were trying to take control of me. "Err.. Hi. I'd like to book an appointment?" I replied in a very nervous tone. The cheerful female voice replied. "Yes of course. Can I just take your name please? And is this just a checkup or an emergency?" Nervously I answered her questions. "My name is Lola. Miss Lola Quinton. And errrmm" I didn't know what to do. My mouth was in agony but I didn't want to make a big deal. I went to reply when she suddenly said... "Okay Miss Quinton. We have a slot free tomorrow at 11am with Dr Urie. Will this be okay for you?" I answered with a "yes" and ended with a "thank you". I then hung up the call and planted my face into my duvet cover. Tomorrow was going to be an eventful day...
