Chapter 2

My alarm woke me up at 9am on the dot. I let out a big yawn and hopped out of bed. Today was a new day with new experiences. I skipped over to my calendar to see what the agenda for the day was. '11am. Dentist appointment at Waveroad dental practice.' I had forgotten about it! My palms began to sweat and my knees began to shake. I sat down on my bed and took 10 deep breaths. 'It's okay Lola, you can do this. It will just be a quick and easy visit to the dentist.' I whispered to myself and started to regain a slight dose of confidence. I stood up from my bed, slipped on some fresh clean clothes and headed down the stairs for the new day to begin. I was too nervous for any breakfast. Even waffles didn't seem appetising for me! I watched television until it was time for me to walk the 15 minutes I was already regretting. I slid on my black laceless plimsoles and headed out the door. The road was unusually quiet today, it seemed rather ghostly and bizaare. The 15 minute walk passed quicker than I had hoped and soon enough I was standing at the foot of an electric door that was ready to eat me up. Once again, I took 10 deep breaths and headed inside. It was a very nicely decorated office, with light blue walls and white details all around. There was a very large fish tank that was immaculately clean. Yet, after a few seconds of admiring the decorations, I heard the noise I hated the most. The sound I dreaded the most. The sound of the drill! I felt sick inside and wanted to run away and hide for ever. But before I could do anything a warm smile met my eyes. "Hello! Can I help you at all?" It was a man. A very tall man with shining white teeth and perfect skin. He had dark brown hair that was gelled to the side and bright blue eyes like diamonds. He was wearing a doctors coat and a checked shirt. Striped black trousers and white laced shoes. I stared at him for a while not knowing what to do. I must have looked like a moron! I shook my head and smiled back at him. "Yes, err, my name is Lola and I have an appointment with Dr Urie at 11am today." "Oh that would be me" he said with a dazzling smile and winky face. "Here, I'll take you through right now, just follow me." Dr Urie began to walk away, so I quickly followed behind him not wanting to loose sight of the beautiful creature. All my worries had suddenly disappeared and for once I felt content. He led me into a small room down a long corridor. It was all colour co-ordinated in a very clean white. Inside the room was a simple dentist chair, an overhead light, a tray, a computer and desk, a wheeled stool, a sink and many counters bordering the sanitised room. He encouraged me to take a seat in the chair and he took a seat beside me on the stool. "So how can I be of help today?" he asked me looking straight in my direction. I felt the nerves slowly coming back now but I tried keeping them under control. "My mouth has been hurting recently and I realised I had better get my teeth checked" I replied to the beautiful dentist. "You definitely made the right decision, it's best to get things checked out if there's an issue. So, when was the last time you visited the dentist." I hesitated. I didn't want to lie to him so I told the truth. "4 years" I sighed. "Okay. What's the reason you haven't been in a long time?" Dr Urie seemed very concerned about me. I began telling him about my experiences until he decided it was time to give my teeth a good check over. I was on the urge of crying, but I was determined not to let any tears slip out. I layed back on the chair and he pushed the button which made the chair lower into a 180 degree angle. I watched his every move. First of all he rolled the tray over to where we were so it was right in front of me. Next he grabbed a large plastic wallet and poured multiple tools onto the tray. I noticed many were extremely sharp which put me on edge. Then he reached over and pulled out a pair of stretchy rubber gloves. He expertly slipped every finger into the correct position and stretched the glove down his arm until it made a snapping sound. He repeated this process for the second glove and it made me cringe. He then reached over and grabbed a mask for his face. He placed it over his mouth and nose and placed both strings onto the sides of his ears so it wouldn't fall off. Now all I could see was the upper part of his face. Suddenly he looked like a scary dentist rather than a gorgeous man and I began to feel fear. He moved the light so it was shining right onto my mouth. He rolled his stool over so his lap was beside my head and once again stretched his gloves, right above my head, to be sure they were in a suitable position. I saw him reach over to his tray and grab a mirror and a pointy tool. "Open please" he said to me in a rather blunt manner. I obeyed him. I was terrified but I didn't want to show my fear. My mouth wasn't open wide enough for him so he gently used his gloved finger to open my mouth wider to his liking. His dazzling eyes were in my view and they were all I could see. He moved the mirror from one tooth to the next and I watched his eyes scanning my mouth. He used one finger to retract my cheeks for a better view of my back molars. I felt slight pain when he used the pointy tool between the grooves of my teeth but nothing too bad yet. He'd been checking my teeth over for around 3 minutes now. I felt very brave so far and also felt comfortable with him looking at my teeth. All was going well until... "Ouch!!!" I exclaimed! I slammed my mouth shut and jolted my head forwards. Luckily his fingers were not inside my mouth and he managed to remove both tools extremely fast. He quickly pushed the button which returned the chair to it's original form and rolled his stool round so he was sitting beside me once again. He pulled his mask down so it was sitting below his chin and asked me what was wrong. "I think you poked a tooth and it really hurt!" I told him as a tear trickled down my cheek. He looked very worried. "Lola, I'm so sorry. I knew there was something up with that tooth but I couldn't tell what. I think I know now though." I was prepared for the bad news. "You're going to need a filling." These words rushed through my head and I began to sob. I said I wouldn't cry but I just couldn't hold it in. Dr Urie pulled off his rubber gloves and threw them away in the bin. He began rubbing my back trying to comfort me. "We can get this over and done with very quickly Lola, it's okay. I'll do it myself and you can trust me. I'm a professional. Here, I'll book you in for 8am tomorrow morning so it's over and done with fast. Does that seem okay to you?" He smiled at me. I nodded my head very subtly. He handed me a tissue and I dried my eyes. Soon enough Dr Urie was seeing me to the front door and I was on my way back home. It wasn't Dr Urie I was afraid of, it was the needle.
