The next day...
Brendon had work today, and I had an appointment for a cleaning. I wasn't as nervous this time, but still felt slight butterflies in my stomach.
Not much occurred last night. We watched a movie and unpacked all my new belongings into suitable places. I really felt at home! I even had my own door key! Brendon once again brushed and flossed my teeth last night. After, I asked him if I still had to go in for the cleaning. He told me it would be different to a normal toothbrush which made me worry.
Brendon's house was very close to the dental office, so when it was time for my appointment, it took me a very easy 5 minute walk.
I reached the office and approached the main reception desk.
"I'm Lola Quinton. I have an appointment with Bre.. I mean Dr Urie, today, please." I smiled at the receptionist.
"Take a seat love, Dr Urie will see you soon."
I was waiting for a few minutes when I noticed a curly haired boy walk through the door, he had his back to me so I couldn't see his face. He checked in at the reception and faced me.
To my surprise... I realised it was Stanley! My 15 year old brother.
Stanley ran up to me and burst into tears.
"Lola.." he sniffled.
"Stanley, what's wrong?" I asked rubbing his back.
I hadn't seen Stanley in years, but I knew he wasn't crying about that.
"I'm scared Lola! I'm scared of the dentist!"
I hugged Stanley tight. We never used to get along but I wanted to be there for him.
"Mum and dad dropped me off and left me here alone" he sobbed. "I'm glad you're here, will you come in with me?" His tone was desperate.
"I have an appointment of my own you realise, dork" I rolled my eyes. "Who are you with?" I asked him.
"Dr Urie, he sounds scary Lola!" He began crying even more.
I laughed. "My boyfriend."
He looked at me confused.
"Dr Urie is my boyfriend Stanley." You're appointment must be before mine so I'll come in with you."
"Thanks Lola" he hugged me tight. "I've never been to this dentist before, it's a new experience for me. I was fine at my old one!"
Then I saw a figure turn the corner.
"Stanley Quinton please"
Stanley wouldn't let go of me!
"Please no, no!" He screamed.
"Stanley, you're making a scene!" I scolded.
Brendon looked confused so approached us slowly.
"Brendon, this is my brother Stanley. I didn't even realise he had an appointment today. He's petrified of the dentist. Do you mind if I come with him?"
"Of course Lola" he said with a warm heart.
I dragged Stanley down the corridor to escape the embarrassing scene he had created. We entered the room and closed the door.
"Stanley, go sit in the chair" I told him.
"No!" He screamed, tears rushing down his face.
Brendon sat us down on a waiting chair in his room and knelt down beside us.
"Hi Stanley" he smiled.
Stanley wouldn't even look at him.
I rolled my eyes at Stanley, still hugging him tight.
"Dr Urie isn't going to hurt you Stanley!" I was getting annoyed but needed to comfort my brother.
"How about we quickly check your teeth? It'll be over with quickly then"
Stanley nodded and carefully sat in the chair.
"Lola why don't you hold Stanley's hand. It may help him out a lot." Brendon smiled at me and I followed his instructions.
I held Stanley's hand whilst he was sitting in the chair.
Brendon snapped on a pair of gloves and placed a mask over his face. Stanley had his eyes shut the whole time.
"I'm just going to lay the chair back Stanley" he stated, gently.
Stanley was still sniffling rapidly.
"Now I'm going to use a mirror to check your teeth" Brendon told him. "Would you mind opening your mouth for me please?"
Stanley shook his head 'no'.
"Open up, nerd" I joked at him.
Stanley opened his eyes and gave me a glare. But then he noticed the mask on Brendon's face. He began to cry even more and squeezed his eyelids shut tight.
"Lola, you need to comfort your brother, you were like this, remember."
I nodded my head remembering when I refused to open my mouth. I felt embarrassed.
"I'll be quick and gentle Stanley, promise." How could you not trust the gentle voice of the beautiful dentist?
Stanley opened his mouth the tiniest bit, but Brendon helped him out, using his thumb on Stanley's chin to open it wider.
For the first time ever, I noticed that Stanley had braces! Mum and dad never allowed me to have braces, they said they were too expensive. So unfair!
Stanley sniffled throughout the whole examination, never opening his eyes and clenching my hand tight.
Brendon had to keep Stanley's mouth open manually due to Stanley often trying to close it. All that was used was a mirror, checking for cavities or damaged teeth. All was going great until Brendon had to use the pointy tool to remove some dirt. Stanley heard to tool being changed and immediately sat up in fright.
Brendon laid him back down gently.
"Stanley, nothing I'll do today will hurt you." He rubbed Stanley's shoulder and continued the examination. I heard the scratching on Stanley's teeth, which even made me shiver.
We were almost finished with the appointment until Brendon said..
"You have a loose bracket on your braces Stanley, i'm going to glue it back down for you. It won't hurt."
I felt Stanley squeeze my hand tighter, he was very brave!
I watched Brendon search his cupboards for the right equipment. He obviously had no idea he'd be dealing with braces in Stanley's mouth.
Brendon took some glue on a cotton bud type tool and placed it on Stanley's tooth, fixing the bracket back into place. He then removed the excess glue with a sharp tool and set the glue with an orange light.
I never thought Brendon would be good with orthodontics too!
The chair was sat back up and Stanley was done for the day. The gloves and mask were removed and everything was good.
"How do you feel?" Brendon asked, smiling at Stanley.
"I don't feel very scared anymore because I knew you wouldn't hurt me. Thank you!" Stanley smiled at Brendon, who then patted him on the back.
"You did very well Stanley, I'm proud!" We both congratulated him, comfortingly.
"Now Stanley, since you've transferred to this dentist, I'll be your dentist as well as your orthodontist. You'll visit me every 6 weeks for your braces and every 6 months for a check up. Your sister can join you too if you like, if it would make you feel happier about visiting." Brendon winked at me and I rolled my eyes.
Soon enough Stanley had another appointment booked for 6 weeks time and was heading out the door to meet mum and dad. I'd given him a hug in advance so I didn't have to see my parents. I couldn't stand the thought!
