Chapter 10

Now, I knew it was time for my cleaning. I wasn't looking forward to it, I didn't know what to expect. Brendon lead me back to his dental room and helped me into the chair. "You're not scared of the dentist anymore, are you Lola?" he asked in a sarcastic tone. "Not as long as you're checking my teeth" I snickered. Brendon snapped on some clean gloves and placed on a mask. The chair was laid back. Brendon placed a bib on my chest, gently patting it down. I was ready for my boyfriend to clean my teeth. "You said you're not confident with your teeth Lola, so this cleaning will take place once a week until your teeth are white enough for your liking." He was about to use the mirror in my mouth, when I interrupted.  "It's not just the way they're not clean that I don't like Brendon" I explained. "It's the wonkiness that bothers me" "So you're implying that you'd like braces?" He asked me in his usual gentle voice. "Well they'd be nice" I sighed. "I can help you out with that Lola. I'm an orthodontist too you know!" He joked. "Let's get this cleaning done first and we'll speak about the braces after, okay?"  I nodded. "I'm going to place bite blocks in your mouth so your jaw doesn't ache" he informed me. I opened up and watched him place two bite blocks in my mouth. One on the left side, and the other on the right. I could no longer open or close my mouth, which meant I was stuck with whatever torcheres tools there were, about to be placed in my mouth. First, a suction hose was placed in my mouth and turned on, sucking all the saliva out of my mouth. Next, he pulled out a round bristly toothbrush. He pushed a button and it whirred fast, creating a lot of noise. He nodded to himself. I felt slightly on edge. He took ages setting up! "Do you like mint?" he asked looking over in my direction. I tried to speak but I couldn't. I decided the best thing to do was a thumbs up. Brendon laughed at me, squirting a large amount of toothpaste on to the unusual looking toothbrush.  I felt embarrassed that my boyfriend was about to clean my teeth at the dentist, but there was nothing I could do about it. He pressed the button on the toothbrush and it began to whir in fast circles. The headrest of the dentist chair was on his lap, meaning his face was very close to mine. I felt the toothbrush moving, making small circles, around each and every single one of my teeth. Brendon's eyes looked very concentrated, as if he wanted to do a very good job. He used his right hand to hold the brush, and the thumb and index finger of his left hand to stretch out the sides of my mouth. It felt extremely uncomfortable but he needed to see all my teeth.  Brendon removed the two bite blocks at the end and cleaned the places he had missed, that the bite blocks were hiding. Brendon cleaned my mouth out with water and the suction, which made horrible slurping sounds inside my mouth. When he was done, he allowed me to spit and sat the chair back up. Brendon threw away his gloves but left the mask sitting below his chin. Was there more he wanted to do? "Take a look" he smiled, handing me a mirror. "Wow, they look so clean!" I felt so excited! "I tried my best" he smiled. "We'll do some more cleaning next week. But for now, braces..." I looked at him waiting for him to say more. "You're positive you want them?" He was being very serious now. I sighed "yes, I'm positive." He stood up and grabbed a fresh pair of gloves, placing his mask back over his mouth. My heart skipped a beat... "You're putting them on now?!" I wailed. Brendon laughed at me! "No silly! I'm going to quickly take a mould of your teeth to be sent to the lab. We can put your braces on in about 4 weeks." I felt relieved! Brendon laid the chair back and I was ready. However, the chair didn't lay back as far as usual. "The mould is usually the worst part of anyone's journey with braces, but just bare with it, okay." He was comforting me. I saw him walk over and stand beside me. He had two trays full of pink goop. It looked horrible! "These will sit in your mouth for about 30 seconds" he said, tucking a fresh bib into my top. "Just breath through your nose, it will be fine." I felt a panic attack about to take place but I kept brave, for Brendon.  The first tray was pressed up against my upper teeth and I started breathing very heavily. Brendon used one hand to hold my upper lips up so they didn't go into the mould, and once the tray was placed appropriately, he used his other hand to hold mine. Despite his hand being gloved, it still comforted me majorly. These 30 seconds felt like the longest 30 seconds of my life. It was disgusting! Brendon found it difficult removing the tray, but with a bit of tugging and pulling, I was finally free! The second tray was just as bad, but Brendon was there for me so I felt okay. Once everything was done, Brendon helped use tissue to clean myself up, removing the excess mould from my face. What a horrible experience! Brendon wrapped up at the clinic, tidying his work space ready for the next day. I sat in the dentist chair playing Candy Crush waiting for him to finish. He took a while but eventually finished up. We linked arms and wandered out of the office and into Brendon's car. Whilst on the way home Brendon began a very serious conversation with me. "Hey Lola" he said. "I noticed how intrigued you looked when I was checking your brothers teeth." I had no idea where he was going with this, but I continued to pay close attention never the less. "I had a thought." "That's dangerous" I joked, causing him to smile in an annoyed, sarcastic way. "Anyway.." he continued, "I was wondering if you'd perhaps like to become my dental assistant?" These words. This question. It all rushed through my mind. A few days ago I was petrified of the dentist. Now me, becoming a dental assistant? I wasn't too sure! "But Brendon, I'm scared of the dentist" I reminded him. "No you're not. Well, not anymore at least." He was telling me this, not joking around. "Lola it will be good. I'll give you the training myself. Besides, all you'll need to do is pass me the appropriate tools and comfort the patient. Easy as that! So what do you say?" I saw him smile in my direction. I sighed. "Sure, I'll give it a try" I said rolling my eyes. "Great, your first day starts tomorrow by the way!" Brendon saw the shock on my face and began to giggle. "We'll get into work early and I'll show you the ropes. Besides, tomorrow is a child only day. The parents leave their kids with us and we check and fix their teeth."  It didn't sound too bad.  "Lola. I forgot to mention. My patients are usually below the age of 20 anyway, so their teeth usually aren't too bad. Apparently I'm good with children" he grinned, showing off his pearly whites as if ready to eat a child. I laughed at him and gave him a playful punch. Tomorrow would be an interesting day...
